Let's take a couple of days, but we probably can't afford much more than that. I don't know what their reaction is going to be when they get word about what happened.

[ A pause, then, carefully, ]

I don't... I guess I don't really know. Hearing that name again...

Did I ever tell you? What happened to him, I mean.

You mentioned that he disappeared. Not much beyond that.

His folks found him out- caught him in bed with some other boy. I supposed I would have been heartbroken if not for the fact that he vanished immediately afterwards. I still don't know what really happened, but I heard the words "he's been dealt with" a lot.

That was when I realized that sooner or later, I was going to have to run.

[ He watches Charlie for a few long moments, silent. ]

How do you wanna do this? 'Cause I'm guessin' showing up at the McLaughlin estate and knocking on their front door isn't an option.

Announcing my presence would just alert my parents. We need to treat this like a job.

[ He's silent for a while longer, then, ]

[ Peter tilts his head back, staring up at the ceiling. His tone turns professional when he speaks again. ] I'll look into their security when we get there. Scope 'em out for a while and keep an eye on their comings and goings. You know what kind of abilities they've got?

The man of the house is a Reader. He can tell the history of an object by touching it, get's brief glimpses of the future. That kind of thing.

[ He hums. ] So I don't have to worry about getting tossed around a room. I can work with that.

Reader's can also get in your head, so don't let him touch you.

--What's that mean, exactly? "Get in your head"?

They can read your mind, first of all. You intentions, your next move.

Also they can... make you see things that aren't there.

[ A beat. ]

Okay. No touching. Easy enough.

I can give you the full rundown, but I think he's the only one we need to watch out for, powers wise.

It can wait, though, if you-- need to take some time, or something. Get rested up or whatever.

[ He almost wants to keep pushing forward. They don’t exactly have a whole lot of time, but he’s still reeling, and his head is aching. He can’t do this right now.

So he lists to the side, leaning against Peter, head on his shoulder. ] Tomorrow.

[ Peter nods, though with how he’s sitting, Charlie will likely feel it more than see it. ]

You need help getting to bed?

[animated]

Might need help sleeping, more than anything. [ He seeks out one of Peter’s hands with his own. ] Stay with me?

[ He gives Charlie a bit of a nudge, twining their fingers together before standing. ]

C’mon, then. I’m not carrying you.

[animated]

[ He’s glad for this- the little quiet moments that they share. Those moments when they twine their fingers together, or share brief glances and barely-there smiles. Their relationship isn’t conventional or healthy by any means, but he wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Charlie gets to his feet, a small smile on his face. ]

Wow. You really are romantic, you know that?
