She see sthe first flash of green when she's sitting against the wall of some fancy uptown bank, her hands around a cup that rattles with light loose change. As the crowd starts to turn, and then there's a couple of loose screams, and Clarice stands up to see the green woman who swings her fist down into the burning car.

Clarice's mouth is a perfect little "oh" as the woman, who is as green as Clarice is pink, rips open the car door and pulls the child from it before the flames come around.

The crowd keeps her from seeing it for several long minutes, even as she tries to push her way through. There's murmers of mutant, and words of calling the Avengers, but Clarice worms her way through to see the green woman duckig behind the still burning wreckage as the firetrucks pull up.

She's not sure how many others see, but the green fades, and then the woman is normal.

Clarice's breath is a stuck thing in her throat as she watches the woman duck into the crowd of New Yorkers.

She follows.

Ducks her head down and keeps her eyes on the hair, following her through the streets. Back to a law office, watching the woman pass through the doors, and Clarice sits against the bricks, her eyes on the doorway, her hand rattling her begging cup.

It's a little fuller when the woman leaves in the late night.

The cycle repeats. Each day, following the woman. She doesn't turn green again, there's no hints of that, but Clarice learns a name - Jennifer Walters. A lawyer, up standing defense lawyer. Sometimes she drops change in Clarice's cup, and Clarice ducks her head down, keeping her skin in the shadows.

And then one night Jennifer Walters does not turn right out of the building, but left, and Clarice waits several slow heartbeats before getting up to follow.

It goes on long enough that Jennifer is now aware that she is being followed. Maybe even stalked. But she needs to know why. Has to collect the facts, So she turns left, and ducks into a dark alley--the kind of whih clichés are made. She lets the shadows swallow her as her other half rises to the surface.

And she waits for the inevitable approach of footsteps.
