It's a dog eat dog world these days, or at least it seems like it. People have turned off their empathy and allow themselves to merely watch the world and the floundering of others as uninterested, cold bystanders.

...or the person you care for - love - the most.

There's someone like that for you. You'll put yourself in the line of fire for them because your love is that strong...even if you don't realize it yet. Or, maybe, if your definition of "love" is tolerating them more or hating them less than anyone else. It doesn't matter if you have to expose yourself to pain, to others, or to them.

Because even if you're not with them or will ever be with them in that way, some people are worth going up to bat for.

Physical: You have to protect them from a violence or an attack.
Mental: They're being tortured with cruel words or subtle barbs that are putting them down, and you can't take it.
From Themselves: With the way they're going, they'll destroy themselves. You have to stop it.
From You: It's for their own good. You have to stay away from them, no matter how it hurts.
Take It Too Far: Seeing them in danger has pushed you over the edge - you're hulking out and going crazy! It's up to the one you wanted to protect to pull you back.
Abuse: Whether familial, societal, or from a significant other, they're in a bad spot and you want to get them out. Of course, it's more difficult that it seems.
Outing Yourself: No one except the other person knew your feelings, but now, you're standing up from them and everyone will know, possibly ruining your reputation.
Unexpected: Either you're a meek and mild slip of a thing no one would expect to stand up for something or you're so stoic and "uncaring" that your selflessness is a complete twist.
Revelation: They didn't know your feelings for them. Well, confession?
Sworn: You've promised to protect them longterm, either to yourself or to them.
Bodyguard: Whether it's unofficial or in a professional context, you're their bodyguard. Falling in love is sticky.
Cover Up: You're protecting them from society's gaze by pretending to be their significant other or even married to them. Hopefully, your real desires don't ruin this.
Instinctive: You didn't even realize how you feel for them, but your drive to protect them has made you aware - especially when you jump into harm's way without a second thought.
Jealous: They don't want to be around that sleaze, do they? You think you're protecting them, yet it's your jealousy coming through.
Rescue: Dungeons, dragons, or thugs...this is a real, all out rescue mission! There's nothing that can get in your way.
Sacrifice: For them, you'll do the ultimate. Your life is nothing compared to theirs, and you'll sacrifice yourself with no second thought whatsoever. But have you thought about how they'd feel?
Repayment: They want to pay you back for all you've done.

[It was supposed to be a routine mission, in and out. They had come across a tip a few days ago about a weapons cartel making a drop that is rumored to carry a weapon of mass destruction. He'd sent Sam and Wanda out to scout ahead, leaving Steve and Bucky behind to wait on the signal. Which never came.

Even now Steve isn't sure what had gone wrong; how they had been found out. But a group of six men had gotten the drop of him and Bucky, leaving them with only two options; surrender, or fight their way out. It's never really a choice for them.

His hands ball into fists as he gives her a quick glance, not willing to take his eyes off their enemies for long.] You ready?
