Kyp always looks forward to coming back to the Jedi Academy. This time is no exception. He would never give up his duties as a Jedi. He owes that to the Galaxy. But coming back is always good, especially when he knows Rey will be there, too.

He lands his fighter in the hanger and jumps out before the canopy fully opens. He searches the Force for her presence, all but ignoring everyone else around him. He can debrief later.

Rey isn't nearly as feral as most would believe her to be - she's made friends easily, and has become more used to little shows of affection, the sort of touching she would have initially shied away from not so very long ago.

It's always come easier with Kyp than it has with most others (Finn not included), so when word spread that he's returned, she thinks that her own responsibilities can wait long enough so that she can offer a proper welcome back.

To the hangar she runs, as quickly as she can manage.

He runs toward her as soon as he catches sight of her. He uses his momentum to wrap his arms around her waist and swing her into the air, spinning recklessly. "Have you been here the whole time I was away and I missed it?"

Rey only laughs as long and as loudly and as pleased with Finn, so it might be a surprise to anyone nearby to hear and see her so lighthearted, happy to be reunited, even if the time parted hadn't really been all that long at all. You find happiness where you could, and being with Kyp was always something to celebrate. "Here and there. But I don't plan on leaving for a while, so you've got me for however long you'll be around."

Kyp grins. "Well, you're stuck with me, then. Until Han calls or Luke has a mission for me. I hope it's at least a month or two."

"A month or two?", she asks, and although she's trying valiantly to tease, the struggle to grin is too hard to fight. "How am I supposed to concentrate with you around all the time?"

[avenger_leader]

"Well..." He can't hide his smirk. "Has Luke taken you to the hot springs yet? Try meditating only to realize a burst of geothermal heat's on it's way."

"No - but if you know the way, maybe we'll have to sneak off for a visit. Could be fun, an adventure, just us. Unless you're not interested, of course, and then I'll just have to find someone who is ... "

[avenger_leader]

"Rey." He frowns, turning puppy-like eyes on her. "Would I really suggest something like that and then back out?"

"Well", she answers, drawing out the word as long as possible. "No, you wouldn't. So, I mean, if you're offering, I'd be a fool to refuse, wouldn't I?"

[avenger_leader]

"You would be. But we should wait for night. It's in a cave but there's a hole in the ceiling where you can see the stars."

"I'm patient. I can be patient - look who you're talking to. But if you tell me any more, I'm going to get impatient, and quickly. How about you ... tell me what you've been up to since you've been gone? Distract me until I can see this place for myself."

[avenger_leader]

He ducked his head, laughing. "I know you are. More than me, anyway.

"Luke sensed something on Dromund-Kaas. It's one of the old Sith home worlds. I'm surprised he sent me at all. Anyway, it turned out to be this old guy, teaching a bunch of kids. And he was using the Light Side."

"Maybe that's why we get along so well", she ponders, nodding sagely, even though it's just a suggestion. "We balance each other out? Something like that, anyway."

She pauses, and frowns, but then smiles hopefully again. "That's a good thing, though, isn't it?"

[avenger_leader]

"Probably. Luke talks about balance a lot. Apparently, it's a Jedi thing."

He nods, eyes dancing. "It's real good. He's not teaching them to be Jedi but... Have you heard any stories from the holocron? He has something like that. He got it from his master and on back to the Sith Empire. But it's not Dark. It's about a Jedi and a Sith who tried to... fix the Empire, I guess. I think he might send some of his students here when they get older."

"Well, if we're gonna look at it that way, it makes perfect sense. Otherwise, I really don't know what you'd see in a scavenger like me."

There's laughter in her voice, but the fear is all too real - someday, everybody would see that she wasn't worth the attention spent on trying to teach her all about the Force, being a Jedi. "No - you might have to tell me more sometime. I'm sure it'll be nice to have them, teach them what we know."

[avenger_leader]

"Oh, probably more than Han saw in me. I still can hardly believe Luke didn't kill me."

There's no laughter in his voice. He's living out his sentence but he still expects the Imperial Remnant to demand his head.

"At least they won't have to face Exar Kun. I hope there's no other Sith ghosts around here."

Her smile fades, and she nods her understanding. Maybe she doesn't yet know the whole story, but they've spoken about enough bits and pieces that she knows it's really no joking matter. "For what it's worth, I'm really glad that you're still here with me."

[avenger_leader]

"Well, I'm glad you don't think I'm going to start stealing memories or blowing up stars again."

He bumps against her shoulder affectionately. "And you're hardly just a scavenger. You're one of the most powerful Jedi here."

"I'd feel it, I think, if you were turning toward anything like that. And I don't, so I think that we're pretty safe in that regard."

She hums softly in response, shrugging slightly. "Think you might be biased. I still have so much to learn."

[avenger_leader]

"I hope you would. But I don't expect you to have to."

He laughs, shaking his head. "I know you do. That's not what I meant."

Good thing there were other things to concentrate on, then. Like being reunited after such a long time apart. "Neither do I. Let me tell you - right now feels pretty good."

Now she breathes out a chuckle, returning the affectionate nudge. "Oh? What did you mean, then?"

"Right now feels awesome," he admits. Having friends feels good. No one had friends on Kessel and he'd been mostly too focused on being able to protect himself after.

"I mean you have so much raw power. If you could see yourself in the Force..."

"Could be worse", she agrees. She knows from experience, after all, the difficulty of a life lived alone. "I'm glad I can make things a little better."

She shakes her head, and glances back at Kyp, and shrugs. "You think so?"

"Oh, I'd say you make things more than just a little better, Rey. You, Luke, and Han might be the only people who don't think I'm about to go Dark again."

He shakes his head. "I don't think. I know. And I'm not the only one."

"Everyone else'll come around, just give them time", she answers, nodding, even though she really can't guarantee such a thing. "I'm absolutely on your side - I mean, just in case you need the reminder."

Rey knows. She's been told about her potential, but sometimes, she still has a hard time believing that she's capable of half the things she's been told she is. After all, she'd grown up thinking that she wasn't worth the space that she took up. "You have such faith in me, sometimes I don't know that I deserve it."

"It's hard to forget but your reminders are always nice."

It's surprising how similar growing up in prison is to growing up on Jakku. "I don't think that kind of thing is about deserving. The Force is so strong in you. The rest is what you decide to do with it."

Rey snorts out an amused little chuckle. "You trying to sweet talk me, Durron? Really, though, she kind of wouldn't mind if he was.

Funny, that. But it was nice to be understood in a way that others never could grasp. It was nice to be able to offer that same understanding in return. "Good things. I just want to do what's right."

[avenger_leader]

"Do you want me to be?" Yeah, he might be testing the waters on that.

He gives her a bitter sweet smile. His rampage when he listened to Exar Kun? Most of that, he'd thought he was doing the right thing. Maybe not always good but right. "Me, too. But sometimes we think something's good or right when it's not."

Well. Since he's asked ... "The thought has crossed my mind from time to time - ", she starts, and pauses, and just knows that the pink in her cheeks is more than obvious. "Yes. I'd like that, if it's something that you want, too."

People make mistakes, it's a fact of life. Sometimes, those mistakes have long-lasting consequences. The most important thing was recognizing the mistake and attempting to right it. "Well, as long as you have me, I endeavor to do my best to keep you on the right track. You can do the same for me."
