Rage fills every inch of you, and there's no doubt you're about to do something dangerous, stupid, or reckless. Or all three. There's only one person who can calm you down: your lover. They have tried everything they know to get those thoughts from your heard. Everything except for this... Now, they're using physical intimacy to remind you what really matters, which is the two of you. Surely, this will bring you back, letting the anger ebb out and you'll be able to think straight again, even if your lover was the actual cause of all this mess. Won't it? ( They've faced down a lot together, she and the Doctor; nefarious universe ending plots, inter-galactic civil wars, life swallowing black holes, death. More than most people experience in a lifetime, let alone the span of a few short years. Mad, her mum had often called them, and she supposes they had to be, a bit, to run full tilt into the danger and intrigue that they had. Not much has changed, except for the part where everything has. It's been six years since a department store in London burned to the ground, by the prime universe's standards anyway, and she and the Doctor couldn't appear less of a unified front if they tried. The danger and the running hasn't stopped, but where their fingers had once instinctively sought each other even in the most mundane of situations, they now only seem to reach for a sonic screwdriver or a Torchwood issued blaster when peril demands it of them. They're still the Doctor and Rose Tyler, the fundamentals haven't changed, but they don't fit together quite as effortlessly as they once had, before Daleks and Cybermen and parallel worlds had given a quietus to the halcyon days of their relationship.

There's a reason for that, of course. Time changes people, circumstances chip away at you, but like everything else about she and the Doctor, it's not that simple. He'd left her, made choices for her that he'd sworn after the Gamestation that he never again would, and had abandoned a part of himself on the linear path with a single heart that had only beat for three months before his fragile human body had inevitably given out beneath the weight of his Time Lord consciousness--and he'd never even bothered to say goodbye.

Those experiences had left their mark, taken their pound of flesh from both of them, and now here they are, a month into her unprecedented return and still they haven't talked about it. Any of it. Not a single word. It's exhausting to cope with, these evasive tactics that he employs, always side-stepping the pink elephant in the room and dragging her off to the next great adventure. There's a certain desperation in his need to keep moving, though, one that hadn't been quite as pronounced before, and it's getting harder and harder to ignore the shifts of paranoid, morose behavior to the eccentric, reckless mania that she's more accustomed to. The Doctor has always been a man with mercurial moods, try as he might to hide them from her, but she's beginning to feel a bit of whiplash as the days wear on and the darkness behind his eyes threatens to engulf what little light is left in them. It scares her, that darkness, cause it's spreading like a cancer through her Doctor and she doesn't know how to stop it.

Words seem so ineffective against him when he manipulates them so well; twists them and turns them back to safer territory so skillfully that it is completely dizzying and bewildering on the best of days. Mostly, though, it just hurts and is left to fester into frustration, indignation and what worries her the most--resentment. She loves him, more than anything, but sometimes she wants to throttle him, just a little, just to see if it'd make a difference, put him off balance long enough to see that it's her, and she's here, and doesn't that matter?

Like right now.

They've been quarantined on some planet with a name she can't properly wrap her human tongue around, all because he hadn't listened when the local constabulary had warned them not to enter the exclusion zone. She still isn't certain of the specifics, just that an unidentified vessel carrying unidentified substances had crash-landed on the surface and left a large portion of the planet uninhabitable for the natives. It might as well have been a great big red button labeled don't push to the Doctor's negligent curiosity, one that seems to have only gotten worse since she'd traveled with him last. He hadn't even bat an eye at the protective gear they could have nicked before he'd soniced an access door and gone crawling into a toxic waste zone with she and her hastily grabbed gas mask quick on his heels.

Which is how they ended up stripped, blasted with some sort of frigid astringent, tucked into some itchy scrubs and marched into the small, sterile, windowless room that she's currently watching him pace from her hunched perch upon the medical cot. She's seen agitated tigers at the zoo look friendlier than he does. He'd practically bit the heads off the guards on the way in, and had she not been so busy attempting to coax him into a less hostile state, the blaze of anger that went far beyond his usual huffing and irritable commentary might have shocked her into silence. )

Doctor? ...You all right?

( He isn't, hasn't been, it's obvious, and her tentative voice says she knows as much. )
