Bright Spot

The world can sometimes seem like a cold, wicked place, and more than likely, it actually is a cruel place. For days, months, years on end, you never catch a break, everything falling to pieces as soon as you pick it up. Maybe, despite this, you still try your hardest. There has to be a light at the end of the tunnel, doesn't there? The fates don't play favorites, so surely your number is about to come up. Or maybe you've given up and decided to allow yourself to barely float along with only bouts of anger or bitterness to keep you above water. There is no light anywhere, is there? But there is. There's one bright spot in your life - a person who makes everything worthwhile. It doesn't really matter how they came to you. What does is that they stay. Whether you admit it or not, you seek comfort from them...and, perhaps, them from you, if you're in the same situation. So, whether you push them away, treat them right, or go so far as to worship them and put them on a pedestal, you don't want them to go now. You crave being with them, or at least being in their presence. Don't ruin this for yourself. After all, what would you do without your little ray of light? You'll do anything to keep them happy and loved. Anything. Respond to the meme with your character, canon, preferences, and, if you'd like, what position you're character will be in. Respond to others.

[This wasn't the first time Frank had stopped by Alias Investigations with a job for Jessica Jones.

Far from it.

She must have thought he was completely incapable of conducting an investigation on his own. In reality, he simply decided she was much quicker and more efficient in locating his targets, and... well, as odd as it might have seemed for some people, he'd grown fond of her rude and abrasive mannerisms whenever he stopped by.

Was she like this with everyone? He thought she probably was, which made him even more amused by it all. Maybe he could be caught lingering in her office more often than necessary, hashing out details that he could have handled himself just to get in some extra time with her.

Today he was looking for help tracking down a drug lord who had recently taken up residence somewhere in the city. This time? He actually did, legitimately, need her help. Some targets really took precautions, not a bad idea considering the amount of vigilantes operating around the area.]

He hates, hates, hates these events, more than just about anything he has to do as the public version of Bruce Wayne. There's no movie premiere, no ribbon-cutting, no meet and greet with stockholders more torturous than gala fundraiser parties. Hundreds of disgustingly rich people smugly putting band-aids on what was left of their consciences by paying $1,000 a plate for rubber chicken and flat champagne in the name of this month's good cause.

Wearing what Alfred likes to call his "other armor", a finely tailored tuxedo that costs more than the average family's mortgage payment, Bruce makes his way slowly across the ballroom floor, nodding and smiling blankly and shaking hands wherever he goes instead of cutting through the sea of people like a shark, the way his instinct tells him to. Not because he smells blood, but because on the other side of that parquet rectangle is the one thing that's making the evening bearable: his date.

It surprised him when Diana said yes to accompanying him, but Bruce isn't fool enough to question the good fortune. He's lucky, he tells himself, to have someone to stand next to that can actually carry on an intelligent conversation and who's even less interested in these wealthy fools than he is. Alfred begs to differ on the subject of Bruce's motivation in asking her out. Then again, Alfred always begs to differ.

He reaches the statuesque figure that's holding court with several senators and captains of industry and sidles up to her shoulder. "Your champagne," he offers, handing her the second flute he's ferried from the other side of the ballroom.

Well I'm not sure Thomas is actually a bright spot, but he's better than a dead father...?

[Thomas is no stranger to sea voyages. He's taken short trips across the English Channel, Mediterranean pleasure rides from Italy, and even this long, long voyage across the Atlantic. But he's aware that Edith, his new bride and a woman in deep mourning, has never taken such a long trip by sea before. He's been slightly shy around Edith since the wedding, worried that he might be crowding her with his presence while she mourns the sudden death of her father. And of course there's the weight of guilt in he back of his own mind, and that suspicious little worry that somehow, by some strange trick of perception, Edith might know the real reason for her father's death...

But he must check up on her, nonetheless. A young lady in a new, strange situation should not be forced to face life without company. So, over the creaking sounds of the rocking ship and the far-off noise of the sailors working abovedecks, he knocks on Edith's cabin door.]
