[ he’s gotten used to it, seeing all three of them together—alec, izzy, and jace—and it’s bit strange to see the two minus the last. a triangle missing one leg, the lightwood puzzle missing one piece. a very obnoxious, arrogant, high and mighty piece of the puzzle in his own opinion. but missed all the same. he gets a first class seat to it, how the institute almost dims without one jace wayland, if anything it’s more quiet. a quiet that’s imbued with a certain urgency, an underlying tension given how the threat of valentine looms over them. a threat that is now grade a given that he has the cup. and maybe he wasn’t right when he first stepped into the institute, when the glamour on the church had peeled away, when he asked if there was a war going on he didn’t know about, but there’s going to be now.

days ago he had seen clary and izzy, their heads bent together, talking in hushed whispers. isabelle’s shoulders slumped in a way that they should never have to be, had caught the end of ‘…should have been able to stop him’ and the word portal with his vampire hearing before jerking into motion, he’s a lot of things, but eavesdropper ( is most of the time ) not one of them. had spared one last look at the pair to see them hugging, izzy’s head on clary’s shoulder before blurring away using his new speed.

he forgets about it, the scene, spends the time he has at the institute ( because he has nowhere else to go, because the hotel is no longer an option given that he stabbed their leader in the back by letting out camille ) trying to work on controlling his own strength, moderating his speed, being around angelic blood and not losing a grasp on himself.

he forgets about it until he encounters alec in one of the many hallways of the institute after a meeting, one that he had been allowed to sit in on because the higher up’s have classified him as more of an annoyance than a threat, about how to deal with jace the traitor once they’ve dealt with his father. to which he had winced and clary had turned as red as her hair with anger. and alec, well, he doesn’t know how to put a finger on the nuances of alec’s expressions, but he didn’t look happy.

alec still doesn’t look happy, and is now directing that un-happy gaze at him, since he’s basically moved to block his way without thinking about it. ] Hey, that was— [ what is the word here. ] intense. Not that I didn’t expect war meetings to be intense, but.

[ of all the times for foot in mouth syndrome of appear. before he can think better of it he’s crossing the one-two steps between them and wrapping his arms around alec in a hug that isn’t the easy intimacy he shares with clary, no it’s more like stilted back-patting hugging that he thinks is probably more unnerving to alec than comforting. ]
