How to Love

No matter how straightforward it may seem, the human emotion of "love," especially true, unconditional love, is complex and often hard to understand. All that forgiveness, all that dedication, all that light in the dark - how can one person have all that inside of them? You don't understand that, possibly because you're not a human. You're a calculating robot, an alien with a completely different frame of reference, or an artificially created being told only to feel certain ways. If you are a human, however, that doesn't necessarily clue you in to all the secrets of affection. Cold, uncaring assassins, brutal warriors, ruthless womanizers and maneaters, or the just plain broken can often feel like robots among their own kind.

But you want that to change. You have a stirring in your chest for someone and you want to know what love is so you can make them happy. This is the first time you've ever wanted to do so and be so unselfish. Hopefully, they can be a good teacher and help you open up, getting you both closer...

...or you could end up with someone as inexperienced as you. Well, there is something to be said about learning together.

It tended to be quiet and perhaps a little lonely at the Dream Gate. That is, until a Dreamer arrived. Sometimes visitors were far and few between. NiGHTS frequented the place in the hope of finding a friend, or perhaps something fun to do. Maybe prank Owl (which was always fun). It was during one of these times at the Dream Gate that the Nightmaren saw a familiar face.

Seeing her made them smile. They had seen this Dreamer and interacted with them quite often, now and again in the Dream world. They had first met them when the young woman was caught within a Nightmare. NiGHTS had sensed something within them that even they didn't understand at the time, and had pulled them out of it while defeating the enemy Nightmaren. They recognized Wanda as someone that could be a target for the Nightmare Realm and had so gravitated to them to guide them. Protect them. Show them around their dreams and discover new ones. Over time, a surprising friendship had developed. NiGHTS sensed a kinship of sorts with Wanda. Dark pasts that both kept unspoken. But it didn't seem to matter.

Feeling a rush of familiarity and affection at seeing Wanda, the Nightmaren perched hidden up in a nearby tree. Rather than fly right over to them, the Nightmaren opted to surprise them instead. They lifted their hands to their face, mimicking the motions of playing a flute. Amazingly, the sweet sounds of the flute drifted in the air to catch the Dreamer's attention. Anything was possible in the Dream World, really. Even 'invisible' flutes.

For all that Wanda was able to manipulate most human minds, it didn't mean that she particularly understood them. She assumed the dream realm was little more than a construct of her subconscious mind, something that she tended to see more vividly because of what had been done to her by Hydra. Whether or not it was actually real to anyone other than her, she didn't rightfully know.

And she couldn't particularly say that she cared, either. While it hadn't always been the cheeriest of places, she'd at least met a friend, odd though the being might have seemed at first. But the oddity wore off almost instantly, as it had whenever she'd been faced with stranger things in her lifetime. So whenever Wanda found herself wandering through here, she looked for... him. Them. She wasn't quite sure what they were, but it had never seemed appropriate to ask. She only knew that they weren't an "it".

She paused as the sound of music suddenly floated through the air, and though she didn't see her friend, she had to smile. "You're not hiding from me, are you?" she asked, though she knew that wasn't true. Looking up towards the source of the music, she took a few more steps before sitting on the ground, watching them play their music.

Through the leaves of the tree, NiGHTS saw Wanda smile as they continued to play. At her question, the Nightmaren impishly winked at her before dangling upside down from the branch. Still playing - they slipped off and hovered before floating down until they came to a stop right before where she sat. Still upside down. It wasn't the first time they had played for her. They had done so before on an occasion where she had been sad - and the Nightmaren had wanted to cheer her up. Now they were just being playful. The happiness at seeing her translated through the bright notes of the music.

With a final trill of the 'flute', NiGHTS laughed and gracefully flipped right side up so that they hovered before Wanda with their hands folded behind their head and their long legs crossed at the ankle as they made themselves comfortable. The light reflected in their moon like eyes and the glittering red jewel on their chest.

"And how are you this fine evening?" The Nightmaren asked, that playful glint still in their eyes as they smiled at Wanda. "It's good to see you again."

Wanda didn't really grin all that easily, but her lips did twist into a small smirk as NiGHTS drifted closer towards her. It was sweet, the way they enjoyed playing music for her, but it wasn't usually Wanda's way to notice those sorts of things. There wasn't really much that was usual about any of this, though.

Tilting her head up at them when they stopped playing, Wanda seemed to think about it before gently shrugging her shoulders, replying, "Better. Now." She paused for a moment before adding in a quieter voice, "It's good to see you, too. I've missed you."

NiGHTS shifted position and floated closer to Wanda. They lay in mid-air stretched out on their stomach and more at eye level so that their companion wouldn't have to look up. Their expression had softened with content narrowed eyes and a small smile as they propped their head up on their hands.

"I've missed you too." They responded, realizing that it was indeed true. They were used to getting to know other dreamers that wandered through the Dream Gate - and NiGHTS had a fondness for most if not all of them. But for some reason they didn't understand - Wanda was different. Maybe it was their shared loneliness or pain. Unspoken but still there. NiGHTS didn't know. But what they did know was that they were always warmed by her presence and their friend never failed to elicit a surprising amount of affection from the Dream Guardian. The hard part was trying to figure out how to share it with her, not used to such companionship.

One way would be to Dualize and take her flying - something that they had never done with Wanda. It was something that was much easier to do with children dreamers - because of their acceptance and purity. Maybe someday...

"So what adventures do you wish for tonight? I hear the Nightopians are going to be having a concert...."

Wanda wasn't used to being missed, considering that she'd spent most of her life with just one person at her side, and they'd rarely ever been apart. Now with Pietro gone, though... well, it was little wonder that she spent so much time dreaming, and not just to be with NiGHTS.

She wasn't sure how to show affection for anyone other than her brother either, and so she was torn between the natural inclination to want to reach out and touch NiGHTS and to maintain her distance. She compromised, sort of, ducking her head a little and almost subconsciously bringing herself just a bit closer to them.

"Nightopians?" she asked with a small laugh. "I don't believe I know what that is. But if you're going to be there...."

NiGHTS grinned, eyes sparkling. "Of course I would be there!" There wasn't even a question that they would or wouldn't be. "The Nightopians are the natives of Nightopia. You probably haven't seen them because they are really shy and scare easily. Once they get to know you though, they are really friendly. They also love music. They tend to gather to play, dance, and also have random concerts."

They held out a hand, inviting. "Do you want to go? It will be fun!" And they also hoped to help Wanda smile and lighten her spirit.

"Are they anything like you?" Wanda asked, smirking just a little. "Because I don't recall you necessarily being shy at all."

Not that that seemed to matter, given that she reached out and took their hand, though she didn't move to get up just yet. "It won't be too loud, will it? It would be nice to be able to talk with you at some point this evening without having to yell over the music."
