Carolina had a favorite spot in the town where they lived, a spot on a hill where they could watch the sun rise and fall in the distance depending on the day, and the weekends were the best time to go watch either one, depending on how much work he had to do on the given day.

So she was watching him from the doorway of his office, trying to gauge exactly how close to done he was.

How long had he been staring at the screen in front of him, endlessly reading and rereading the same paragraph over and over? Knowing the deadline for this draft was looming but completely frozen as to how proceed.

His coffee had long since gone cold and as he tried to relieve the ache behind his eyes he also tried to ignore the bottle he kept in the lower right drawer of his desk. Allison would have been pissed if she knew how often he'd been relying on a stiff drink or two to sleep through the night.

"Oh, hey there Carolina." He slipped his glasses back on. How long had she been there watching him? why hadn't he noticed her sooner? "It must be just about time to go."

He smiles, but it doesn't quite reach his eyes.

That was enough to pull her into the room, at least, and she walked over to stand beside the desk. "It is, but if you don't feel up to it, I can just go read in my room." She was quiet for a moment before she glanced up at him.

I mean, you've still got a lot of work to do, right?"

"I do." a frown shadows his features. He needs to finish this, but at the same time he knows how much keeping up habits like these help her deal with how much had changed. Maybe it would help him break through this wall he was up against.

"Tell you what, give me an hour and we'll see."

An hour wasn't that long and Carolina nodded after a second before her focus shifted to his cup.

"I can bring you some fresh coffee too, if that'll help." She'd more or less insisted on learning how to do that much and the coffeemaker was simple to use.

"Hmm?" Right, he'd had coffee. "That would be really helpful."

He gives her another, genuine smile this time. It still struck him as amazing how quickly she was growing up, each milestone making her more and more her own person... more and more like her mother.

And really, seeing him smile at least has her smiling back before she takes the cup go make him a fresh one and then brings it back along with a sandwich on a plate.

"You should probably eat something too. There's a casserole in the fridge to heat for later, but..."

"But I haven't eaten all day..." He nods as he takes the plate and mug from her. It was a bad habit of his, getting so absorbed in his work that he forgot to take time to actually eat... Something Allison had always been on him about. Frankly he just wasn't hungry, but he accepted the sandwich anyway. He might even eat some of it.

"Give me a little longer and we should still have time to make the sunset."

That got him a nod before she was gone, back to her room to pick up the book she'd been reading, picking up where she'd left her bookmark. Technically, it wasn't one she was supposed to be reading yet, but so far, she hadn't seen anything that would make it bad.

The art was pretty too, and it was easy to get lost in the story usually, but she ended up glancing at the clock beside her bed more than actually focusing on the book.

He tries to pick up working from where he left off... it's slow going but he manages a couple more paragraphs before losing focus again. He even manages to eat half of the sandwich. But his eyes stray to picture of Alison on the desk and... why didn't he do more?

Getting a night off was something she usually enjoyed but tonight she was restless, and had been all bout conscripted to join some of the others at a club near the base. Which honestly didn't bother her much, since she did like the place and it had good music.

But she'd had to make a stop first so she was late getting there, her boots clicking against the walkway as she approached doors and then slipped inside. It was packed, as expected and Carolina exhaled a breath before heading for the bar instead of braving the crowd to try and find the other recruits.

They'd find her if they wanted to. She ordered a drink as she settled on one of the empty stools.

York is going to punch every last one of them, his friends that had dragged him here. He was up for going to a club but this one was just ridiculous, full of go-go dancers in cages and obnoxious intermittent strobe lighting, the music loud enough that he had to scream for the bartender to hear him but not good enough to make him want to dance. Maybe if he saw someone worth braving the crowd for he'd get out there but for now he just sits at the bar nursing his drink, flicking his lighter on and off idly, bored out of his fucking mind. Maybe he should find somewhere better on his own, he thinks... and then a woman walks in and sits a stool away from him. Bright red hair, eyes glittering in the questionable club light.

He does his best not to stare at her, catching glimpses out of the corner of his eye. That's someone he'd get out on the dance floor for. He'll buy her next drink, he thinks.

Of course she catches him looking and there's a moment where she's considering how to react, but he hasn't actually tried to hit on her yet. Which is a plus, for him, so far and Carolina drains her glass before she rolls her shoulders, gaze shifting to the dance floor.

The club is packed, and for the moment peaceful, but this place? Tends to have it's share of fights, especially on nights like this. Someone makes a comment, a wrong move and then there's punches being thrown.

Her phone vibrates and she checks the message before sliding it back into a pocket.

...So much for her friends being here. They'd ended up across town instead, which is enough to have turning to order a refill.

The bartender is closer to York than the woman so he takes out another bill, placing it on the bar and raising a hand to get the guy's attention. "Another for her," he requests. It gets him a smirk, but the bartender takes the money and moves on to the woman to refill her glass. York actually does look over at her, then, offering a little smile.

What's the worst that could come of it?
