[ Breaking up with Sora wasn't necessarily the hardest part. They were both self-aware enough that they knew immediately when something was fizzling out like the end of a fireworks show. And they were best friends, at the end of it all. Yamato values Sora's friendship as much as he values Taichi's — and really, that's probably the first clue. Yamato admits that he's sort of dumb about these things, crest of friendship notwithstanding.

Getting over her isn't great, but Takeru has compared it once it to climbing a mountain — the hike up is worth it when you reach the top.

The thing is, there's certain clarity that comes to Yamato's head when he does reach the top, so to speak, and gets a good view of the general picture. He's surrounded by friends, family. People who love him, and people he cares for right back. It's easy to tangle everything as one giant mess of emotions balled up into familiar affection, but when you're really watching it all unfold, it's not quite that simple. He'd been so single-minded, trying to get his relationship with Sora to work out, and he wonders if Sora's known it for a while. She holds the crest of love, after all.

There's rules about this sort of thing, though. Yamato's broken a few, like don't date your best friend, which can't be helped. It's not like Taichi's strapping for a medal in that department, either, seeing as he's only too willing to forgo the rule don't date your best friend's ex who's also your best friend once Sora's open to relationships again. The problem is that it sets a precedent, one that Yamato would surely follow, if he doesn't start the trend himself.

He's not... necessarily on a date. He and Mimi have been talking about going to this certain place that has a lot of fancy, unhealthy desserts on menu that they've wanted to try out for a while. Before, it was a semi-hashed out plan to go with a few of their friends and have a good time. Yamato hasn't been in a very friendly mood in a while, and only recently has he resurfaced from the angst-ridden fog he'd been under. Mimi had asked if he wanted to go a few days ago, sweet and sincere as she always is, and now he's here, waiting. Like he's waiting for his date who's always fashionably late.

Yamato repeats the mantra don't date your ex's best friend who's also your best friend and thinks, not for the first time, that he is so screwed. ]

[It had been a while since he'd last seen Kuroko. Mayuzumi's eyes narrowed as he watched the other through the small space between the books of the store's shelves. Why was his heart kicking up speed? It wasn't as if they were on a court where he had to watch the other obsessively or chance losing track of him.

Kuroko didn't seem to have noticed his staring, which was good, because it meant Mayuzumi had more time to observe and figure out what this weird feeling in his chest was.
