Alistair had only personally known Lestat for a little while, though it was impossible to have not known of him by the time they met. His boldness had unveiled vampires to the entire world, and while Alistair should have been outraged or afraid, he was utterly amused. Still, he kept his distance, especially through ensuing bloodbath caused by the little prince's tryst with Akasha. Having lived through the War of the Roses, he had grown tired of internecine conflict and chose simply to live his life, undead as it was.

At some point after the dust had settled, Alistair had the fortune to cross paths with Lestat and to say that he gushed might have been a bit of an understatement. He was absolutely adoring of the other vampire and acted with a physical intimacy that was certainly more expressive than other vampires his age, but not uncommon its intensity. Tonight, as usual whenever they found themselves in the same city, he came up behind the prowling wolf and threw an arm about his shoulders.

"Must you always go hunting in such dismal places? I appreciate the clean-up job you do with the criminal element, but you always drag me to such unsavory locales."

The music broke into Cecil's with the harsh sizzle of static, smoothing out into a quieter melody. It was the weather after all. No place for loud screeches and shouts. That was more financial.

A smear of fingers drew over the window in front of Cecil. Or maybe there had been a vortex he hadn't seen. Either way, a dark shadow that wasn't an intern gazed in at him. It was like him around the eyes and wide smile but little more. In the background, the music played on and then ended to dead air.

The smart money would be on walking away even as the figure pressed his blood-stained fingers to the studio window and then turned from him as if to leave. Behind them, the music died and left the hiss of air waiting for a broadcaster to fill.

[ the bottom line is that he could never ever hate clary, he doesn’t when she chooses to dig him a grave, the shovel over the stake, not when he looks at her with vision that is too sharp, blood smeared over his lips, on his tongue, not when he can feel the points of fangs on the inside of his cheeks. he wants to go to her, when he realizes that she has tears welled in her eyes, dried on her cheek, but he doesn’t. instead he runs, not because he’s angry ( he will be, later ) or because he can’t stand seeing her glued to jace’s side, it’s because he’s afraid that if he gets to close he’ll have the urge to bit her instead of wrap her in his arms. he’s irrationally afraid, in that instant, that he’ll never be able to touch her or hug her or read comic books with her pressed to his side again because he’s—

dead. undead.

so he runs what feels like miles, and his muscles don’t ache or protest, and he hates the fact that he isn’t even out of breath. he meets her at the hotel later, crowds himself on the other side of the cage raphael has put them in, holds on to the steel bars to ground himself because he can smell the blood pulsing and alive underneath clary’s skin.

it gets easier, over time. to ignore the urge that tells him that clary is nothing more than a juice box to be punctured and drained. hugging her becomes easier, but it takes recalibration on his part. a monitoring of his own strength, because he doesn’t want to hold too tightly, doesn’t want to hurt her. he has to remember to breathe around her, he doesn’t have to now of course, but he wants to keep up appearances. keep things normal, the same as they have always been.

( raphael asks what they are once, he and the fairchild girl as he puts it, and he only shrugs smiles lopsidedly and says that they’re best friends. raphael raises an eyebrow, and simon tacks on in a quick exhale that she’s his best friend that’s coming over tomorrow and no one is going to attack her or otherwise look at her the wrong way or else. raphael looks like he’s going to say or else what for a moment, but then makes a show of sighing and rolling his eyes. exists with a dios that simon counts as an okay. )

when clary arrives he’s wearing one of his old t-shirts one that’s from their high school’s math team, and wraps an arm around her shoulder and steers her towards what has been dubbed his room. which is all black leather, ostentatious gold curtains, and glass cases filled with artifacts that he doesn’t have it in him to appreciate.

a moment where he removes his arm from atop her shoulders, shoves his hands into his pockets, and smiles in a careful way that he knows doesn’t show off his fangs. ] Welcome to my not-so-humble abode. I’m planning on redecorating a bit, just so you know.

Maybe putting up some posters would make things more homey.
