Deserve to be Happy

If we're honest, fictional characters can be generalized into two camps: 1. good people who have crap happen to them or 2. just crappy people. But bad or good, cheery or grouchy, undeserving or no, we sometimes shamelessly want them to have something nice in life. Or, more accurately, someone nice. A certain someone to give them kisses and their favorite foods, to make sure they have a blanket when they fall asleep, and maybe to whisk them away on fun dates/adventures? If they're lucky, this somebody may even give killer back rubs.

But forget your shame, okay? No judgement here. This is just a cute meme for all your gross (shipping) needs, where your character can get all the happiness they deserve...or don't. Whatever!

Comment with your character's info, your prefs, all those goodies. You can also include info about what would make your character really happy or if there's a particular role you'd like to play (maybe the one doing the cheering up?).

As a somber and stoic man who struggles with feeling hopeful, relentlessly optimistic and high energy people are a good fit for him. Convincing him to do something outright silly and fun is the best way to make him happy. On the flip side, he's good for calming others and is fundamentally a caring person who's good for soothing the emotional.

[while dodger here is technically a 'bad' person, it's due to the circumstances that have happened to him. he'd probably be on the side of cheering up others, though. he's that sort. Older incarnation available upon request]

[Poor girl has all the horrible happen to her, mostly because of her extremely neglectful parents. She will try to cheer up others, though, because she's a sweetheart like that]

[A loving, maternal young woman thrust into bad circumstances (incl. but not limited to abusive relationships, thievery and prostitution). She's always around to cheer people up, and make the best of what her life is like. Even if she's painfully aware that it sucks.)

_{[He's become more and more of a depressed shut-in over time, thanks to his lack of decent income and everyone he knows being too far away both status and geography-wise. He could use a friend, or a squeeze. M/M for the latter.]}

[ It's a quiet night in Brooklyn, the city peaceful and sprawled out before them. Tonight, Bucky is curled up with Steve, having spent the last few hours together, tangled together in intimate pleasure.

Bucky has only touched down this morning, and had stepped into his lover's arms to make up for nearly a month's worth of lost time. He reaches out to flick their bedside lamp on, fingers lightly brushing through Steve's lovely golden hair, appreciating the way he's asleep on his chest.

His skin is bathed in a golden glow, and he rests back against the pillows, aching but more content than he's ever been. He's missed him so, and he exhales, cold toes pressing against Steve's calf. ]

We should think of getting dinner soon.

[ Even with communication, nothing is the same as this. The feel of another person, the way they move or breathe, feel and taste. Steve likes to think he remembers things rather well, but some details might have slipped given how long it had been, reminding himself of those very things the moment they'd had time to themselves. Now, he's much too relaxed to move, half-aware when the lamp is turned on, and all he does is tilt his head into the press of those fingers, shifting to suppress the shiver working up his spine from the touch against his leg. ]

You think of a place already? [ His voice is deep, drowned in sleep and comfort. Steve sort of mumbles it into his chest, a lazy kiss pressed just beneath his collarbone. ] Italian? Thai?

[ He could list numerous other places, all of them relatively close and not more than a quick walk or a short phone call away. Honestly, he's not sure he could even manage reaching to get his phone, perfectly fine with their arrangement and how good it is. To prove his point, he just kisses that spot again and stubbornly flattens himself against him. ]

[ Steve is adorable when he wants affection, and Bucky is more than happy to give it to him. The man has been such a huge part of his life, given him so much -- and still Bucky wants more, seeing him as a living sanctuary, the only thing that Bucky wants to come home to.

He feels his skin tingle at the kiss, the reaction he draws from his lover, and his hand comes to trace over those muscles, the skin of his shoulder with a loving grace. He won't get enough of Steve's kisses, he decides, even while he mulls over the choices of restaurants.

So many things in the world have changed and so have his circumstances; but to think that he'd be thinking of something this mundane. He leans down to press a kiss to the crown of Steve's head. ]

Like hell I'm letting you out of bed. I was thinking pizza. Does anyone else do delivery? How about your favorite chinese place?

[ Eyes still closed, he presses his cheek to the curve of his shoulder. There's an easiness about all of this that doesn't come from phone calls or messages, and Steve soaks it up faster than it's given, eventually dragging his nose along his chest to mouth gently at the soft dip of Bucky's throat. He could spend the next hour doing this; his mind honestly isn't even considering food, though that certainly doesn't mean they can't continue this after. There's a soft hum as he thinks about the question, nudging him lightly with his knee. ]

I can do pizza. [ He doesn't even mention that picking up anything from his favorite place would be faster than actually calling. ] You want me to order?

[ Steve lifts his head to glance at the bedside table, which might be the direction of his phone, but he gets distracted by the expression on Bucky's face, sliding up so he can rest his weight on his forearm and lean over him. This is the simplest, pointless conversation they've probably ever had. Still, he wouldn't want that to change, not when they're finally so comfortable with each other, and he kisses the corner of his mouth, his chin and jaw ever so slowly.

Food could wait a few more minutes, right? ]

[ Pizza, huh? Bucky grins at him when he watches Steve raise his head to eye the phone before getting quickly distracted. He leans up to kiss him, happy to let him forget about it because he remembers how much he loves steering his lover's attention away from everything else onto himself. He loves how Steve fixates on him, and he becomes all Bucky ever sees and wants in this life.

He takes it slow, cool metal fingers tracking down his spine to linger at the small of his back, circling the dip of his spine. ] It can wait. You're so damn beautiful like this, I could eat you up.

[ He hums softly, thumb coming to press lightly on his bottom lip, slipping easily between them to stroke delicately at his tongue. Their bodies are twined so sweetly together, it's impossible for him to let him go. He noses him right back, stubble of his cheek rubbing against his smooth jaw in turn. ] What if I did just that?

[A gentle big mutant who wants to protect his friends despite life constantly throwing him betrayals and mishaps, but he can do either role. Up for h/c and fluff mostly, m/m if shippy.]

[Someone kind and non-judgmental.]

[Has put his own life on the line about a billion times to try and save his world from an apocalypse that already happened (time travel shenans), because he believes it'll redeem him for all the horrible things he needed to do to survive until he was recruited. Guilt and martyr complexes high, survivor's guilt high, self-worth almost nonexistent. Could use some reassurance that he's not a monster?]

[ A key turns in the lock of Cole's apartment; Pell doesn't expect Cole to be home yet but he can take Jose for a walk, maybe start dinner for them. He got off work early and picked up some groceries to do so. Ramse's on a trip but Cassie always seems to be working late and might appreciate something being left for her. He steps inside and closes the door, toes off his shoes, and calls for the dog... who doesn't come.

That's not normal. ]

Cole..? Are you here?

[No. No, the last thing he needs right now is to see one of the people here who truly believes in his goodness - there are some who would be worse, who nearly worship him rather than quietly accepting him the way Pell does, but this is still wrong.

He can't drive the man away, though. What can he do?

Limply, he gets up and opens the door to his room so that Jose can run out and greet Pell, then closes it again. He'll let Pell decide what that means, sitting back on his bed in the meantime and cradling his head in his hands.]

[ Well then. Pell has no idea what that means, but it can't be anything good. He crosses to the kitchen counter to put the grocery bag down and then leans to greet the dog. ]

Hey, little guy. Your owner alright in there?

[ As if in answer Jose does a little turn in place, like he wants to run back to Cole. Hmm.

He'll give it a minute to put the cold things in the fridge, but then Pell's heading deeper into the apartment and stopping at Cole's door. He doesn't knock, just like he doesn't knock at the front door anymore, simply cracks it open to let the dog slip inside. And that's enough warning; he's following. ]

Cole?

[Cole doesn't look up or shift in any way. After a long silence, he finally starts to talk.]

There was a fight. A bad one. Haven't seen anything like that in... I tried to break it up, but the guy who was winning, he came after me.

[The hands resting at his temples start to shake, and he glances over at his bedside table, where his gun is sitting out and, to him, painfully visible.]

The other one bumped my arm in time. I talked to Samantha already, I'm not going home. But...

[But. He fired on someone. And he only shoots to kill.]

[ Pell follows Cole's gaze to the gun and knows what happened. He didn't just draw, he fired.

Something twists in Pell's chest, a cold knot of fear for Cole and what he must be feeling right now. What he must be thinking of himself. Fear for himself that it could have gotten Cole sent home -- he can't lose him.

He steps forward and sits on the edge of the bed, reaching out. ]

It was instinct.

It's not instinct!

[That bursts out of him before he can stop it, too harsh for Pell, too loud and strident; with some effort, he draws his anger back in before speaking again.] You're born with instinct. I learned this. And I can't get rid of it, no matter how long I'm here.

[When he lifts his head at last, he still can't look at Pell, but now the agonized conflict in his face is clearly exposed.]

I won't even be able to live in the world I'm making by being here.

[ He's right; Pell flinches away from the yelling, dropping his hand in case Cole doesn't want to be touched. ]

There's learned instinct, as well, you know. One mistake doesn't mean you won't be able to live in that world. It's just a mistake. You're not perfect -- no one is perfect enough to be able to curb all their old habits at once all the time. You can get rid of it. It's important to you, you just have to give yourself more time.

The important thing now is you didn't hurt anyone.

How long's that gonna last, though. How long can I keep getting lucky.

[He's almost hurt so many people. He came close to breaking Pell's wrist the first time they met, over a cheese stick. Right now, he just can't see any way to move past it, not when he snaps into that mode far too suddenly to catch himself. The very life he lived groomed him into a lethal weapon.

But Pell's here, he's trying. The first person he attacked here is still willing to try. When that finally dawns on him, he looks up with a softer sort of desperation: come here, it says, help me, because he doesn't know how to speak those words aloud.]

I think it's more complicated than luck. There are lots of factors to anything -- I know how fast you are, you must have hesitated even if you don't realize it.

You're just scared right now, Cole. You have to keep trying.

[ And then Cole looks up at him, and Pell reaches out again to run fingers through Cole's hair, pushing it back from his face. He's so tempted to just crawl into Cole's lap and hold him, but doesn't know if that would be welcome yet. ]

Be patient with yourself. We all are.

[Mostly just a huge asshole, but with desertion/abandonment issues a mile wide and deep inner scars from spending his early teenage years on the streets. An attempt at understanding would go a long way.]

[He'll take quiet, lonely strays who have slipped through the social cracks for the ride of their lives, lots of adventure and parties and camaraderie, but more astute sorts might notice that the endless cheer is hollow and he could use a lot of love in return.]
