Only Us
( shipping meme ) ![]() In a more normal time, this person would never be your type, if you even had one. But these days are nothing like "normal" in the least. The world, as it was, has ended, after all. The means don't matter: fire, ice, apocalyptic continent shift, zombies, despotic government that makes you wish for the former. All you're left with is the ashes of our former world and danger at your tail because you, lucky you, have survived. Having your pick or your type is a luxury you don't have; even if you did, it would be an extremely low priority. As such, this situation, this relationship with this person hardly started out with any romantic intentions. It may have not even begin friendly. You came together out of necessity in order to survive, yet things got dicey as you learned to rely more and more on each other. When both of you feel as though you've lost everyone who'd ever been important, human contact is taken where you can get it. The more you rely on to watch your back, the more you rely on them for mere survival, the more you begin to rely on them for everything, in a way. While what you have between you started differently, it's grown and changed into something you can't describe. Still, you hold on for dear life, because even if you don't want to live for yourself anymore, you owe it to them to survive. This isn't love. It isn't healthy. It's codependency, probably, but it's a way to live. What if they're not as much of a survivor as you, though? What if they're weak? What if you are? ...what if you lose them like you've lost everyone else? HOW TO PLAY

When the world fell, there was no fanfare, no big announcement. It fell in stages: patient zero here, an outbreak there, and then suddenly there was no more time for wondering or containing. There was only time to run. Bruce and Betty had gone to the only place left for them, the one place they could possibly hope to make a difference: the CDC in Atlanta, Georgia.
They'd known about the research initiative since the outbreak began, but it wasn't until their arrival that they realized the extent of the disease. Half of the country had already been affected, with their numbers growing exponentially; communications had been cut, and their flight was one of the last to take off. They were, for all intents and purposes, trapped in the research centre.
There were other scientists at first, but many of them left, unable to cope with the impending fates of the human race and choosing instead to spend their days protecting their families. The ones that remained worked around the clock, trying to find a cure, anything to stall or prevent the epidemic from getting worse.
It wasn't until Bruce had self-injected himself that things really went south.
They didn't have any other choice - the lab mice were gone, and they had to test it on a living subject. He was already tainted by one science experiment gone wrong; he didn't mind sacrificing himself if it meant advancing the cause.
"Do you think it'll work?" he asked, glancing over at Betty from across the lab station they were working at. His hands were busy preparing the solution, but his attention was focused on her. If he was going to die from this, he wanted to remember her properly in his last moments. It was a morbid thought, but then, these were morbid times.

Eggsy Unwin | Kingsman: The Secret Service
[fortunately, a post-apocalyptic reality has been proposed by canon!]
The last thing he did was build her a device, so she could experience the book as if it were reality and forget about the ruined world outside her room. So she was the traveller, Kino, and wandered from place to place, with only Hermes, her talking motorrad for company. Until one day, it stopped working and her father was gone. She always thought she'd be the first to leave... The cracked vessel lasts longest, she mused detachedly.
She had been living in the world of the book so long... she couldn't reurn to a life of doing nothing and only being cared for. Especially with no one to care for her. So, she decided, she would be Kino in this world too. Hermes, if she put her mind to it, she could hear what Hermes might say in any given situation. It'll be harder to travel like this, but she'll don the coat, take up arms, she still remembers how to shoot, even if her body's weaker. If there's really no one else out there, she probably won't have to fight anyway...
The sunlight is cold and pale on the rubble of humanity. What might she find, out there?]

As he soon quickly found out, though, these travels were far more lonely and quiet than he was willing to admit - then again, such is what happens when he decided he'd help Milla with her duties in the Spirit Realm for a time... just for research, of course. ( Or so he said. ) ]
Is it usually this quiet when you're carrying out your duties, Milla...?

[Although Milla's been even more busy than before, considering she was now watching over both Rieze Maxia and Elympios. She was expecting to do it all on her own, but it was a pleasant surprise to see Jude come join her. Well, there was Muzet, but uh.... it wasnt.... quite the same. Honestly, Milla wasn't sure if she'd ever really see Jude or the others again personally. To talk to them and really see them face to face....]

[ Things had become more peaceful in their world as well, all the more so now that there was no more war looming on the horizon - though it had become much busier on his end thanks to his involvement in spyrite research. In fact, part of said research involved how the spirits were affected by the use of spyrix to ensure that there wouldn't be similar problems when they finished creating spyrites - hence why Jude had volunteered himself
as tributeto spend time in the Spirit Realm until he got all the data that he needed.. . . though no one had set a time limit on that research, so he's making use of that time to be with Milla as much as he can before he has to eventually depart, as well... shhhhh. It's a secret to everybody. ]
Do you mind if I ask how it usually is here?

It used to be a bit more busy trying to protect spirits initially, but it seems my duties have expanded to both worlds now. Although I've been trying to keep the peace in Elypios from my end, I don't think the help of Maxwell or any other spirit really goes far for them like it would in Rieze Maxia.
/slyly alludes to ToX2 in this tag...
[ Though from the sound of it, it also sounded like they had their own share of problems and other things to deal with? From the sound of things, there was talk about some new research involving something called a "many worlds" theorem?
Of course, he was more interested in spyrite research, so here he was with Milla, chatting about the state of affairs in the Spirit Realm... ]
Though I hope that whatever influence the spirits have used there has helped regardless... there's still a lot of things that need to be straightened out in both lands.
