[ There had been a rumor going around school for a while now that Nagisa liked him as more than a friend, and Rei was not sure who started this...not to mention every time he asked Nagisa about it, he just laughed it off. (Let's be real, Nagisa probably started this "rumor.") Rei decided he would ignore it, but then there was a rumor going around that he liked Nagisa in return, which he wasn't sure just who found that out. Of course, Nagisa was special to him and he had come to the terms that he might have some feelings for his best friend...he just didn't know how to say it.
A few essays later, Rei decided that he should probably not just give him some giant novel of a confession for him to read, but that definitely would be easier on himself. Maybe some excessive gift would do the trick since Nagisa had been bugging him about everyone saying that he "like liked" him, which was embarrassing enough. So, Rei had decided to bring some chocolate covered strawberries in a bouquet style to school to put in his locker in secret so he wouldn't have to deal with the embarrassment of handing it to him in person. Believe it or not, it came with just a short note that said, "The rumors are true." and nothing else. It was simple, short, and to the point, but he just didn't want to be there to see Nagisa's reaction since it could go badly. Honestly, it was a miracle that Rei even gained the courage to do this, and maybe he was encouraged by someone to tell him. (Probably Gou, honestly.)
Anyway, here he was, about to head towards Nagisa's locker to put these sweets there, as he even calculated when he was not going to be at his locker so he could put them there and leave. But...something went wrong. Nagisa was there, and he probably saw him. Rei panicked and ended up turning around way too fast, bumping into a nearby janitors cart in the process. He sure did stumble, and he thought he caught himself...but no, no he didn't. The bouquet flew out of his hand, and in a dumb attempt to catch it, he ended up falling on the floor with his hands out and open to catch this...which...did not work. The sweets were all over him now and he let out the most awful, not manly at all scream as he tumbled to his embarrassing fate. ]
[ Nagisa had always found the rumors about his little crush intensely funny. part of that probably had to do with the fact that it was him who let the first mention of it slip to the general public. this was, of course, all part of his Master Plan, completely thought out, which is to say that it was something he did on a whim because he was feeling especially giddy that day and just had to tell someone outside his inner circle about it. it wasn't until the gossip spread and he started to see how embarrassed Rei was getting (but, like, in a very very cute Rei-chan kind of way, the kind he could watch for hours and hours and never get bored) that he decided to add fuel to the fire, and turn this into a little game in hopes of creating notion that this stuff was very much real in his stubborn friend's mind. he may have never fully believed Nagisa if he told him himself. but he certainly could not deny the masses!
it took a little more time than he would have liked.
watching Rei be embarrassed and pretending to be totally innocent of it was fun and all, and he certainly couldn't deny that he approved of the direction it seemed to be nudging him, but maybe petty whispers and gossip wasn't going to be the way to go after all. so that very morning he decided to up his game even more and plant a surprise trap in Rei's locker that would be sure to seal the deal. he decided he wanted to get there early rather than risk slipping it there between classes (last thing he needs is detention for skipping - again) and he's just getting to his own locker to retrieve the goods when he spots Rei coming.
he has just enough time to turn with a look of surprise (and a little horror—he got here early too?!?!), note that he's carrying something that looks sort of like flowers before it explodes everywhere and Rei is floored. a snort of laughter forces its way out of him involuntarily but he bites it back as he rushes over to help him, reaching for what's left of the bouquet. ]
Rei-chan, are you okay?! You dropped your, err, lunch... it's everywhere!
[ Rei didn't know where that card on this bouquet went, and he sure was looking frantically for it on the floor, despite his glasses being smothered in strawberries and chocolate. He'd clean those off next, but the card came first...especially since he knew that nosy Nagisa would pick it up and read it.
At least he did find it and quickly tried to put it up his sleeve before whipping out a glasses cleaning cloth as he stood up to clean his glasses. It was strange, he thought, how Nagisa was actually here earlier than 5 minutes before class. ]
This isn't my lunch, honestly, Nagisa-kun, do you think I would eat sweets for lunch? You should know me better than that---but what are you doing here so early?
[ don't think he doesn't notice that not slick at all swiping of the card. he watches it go up Rei's sleeve with no lack of visible scrutiny, and makes sure Rei knows it by crinkling his nose at him certain way as he looks up from his sleeve, but now is not the time to call him on it. ]

[ ok sure. he makes himself "busy" with helping to scoop up the strawberry/chocolate disaster—it's only once he has a few of them in his hands that he realizes what they are and promptly drops them again in horror. ]
This is the biggest tragedy I've ever seen!!! These poor strawberries—! Rei-chan, I can't believe you let them die.
[ they are people with souls and now they're dead. you murderer. ]
[ Rei saw that look, and he was honestly just hoping that this meant that Nagisa did not see and that he was just making a face at the question he was asked. ]

[ He knows that he's up to something, but Rei can't figure out what yet since with Nagisa, it could be really anything from he was hungry to plotting some kind of way to take over the school. Okay, maybe not that last part, but the world just never knows with him. ]
I know! They were freshly picked too--I even saw the person hand making them! I suppose there is time before school to pick up another bouquet...

[ looking up again, having scooped up the strawberries again. he doesn't drop them again this time, at least. that floor is starting to look kind of gross. just tilting his head to the side, his nose crinkling suspiciously again. ]

[ He can tell that the other is suspicious, but he decided that he would not elaborate yet since Nagisa didn't seem to be bothering him about it too much yet. ]

[ yeah you're doomed. he squints his eyes at that lame little laugh and then sits up higher on his knees, like if he makes himself taller that he'll be more authoritative and get the answer he wants. how often is it that he is in any way "tall" anyway. ]

[ Rei reached out and allowed him to help him up even though he was perfectly fine getting up on his own. Though, unfortunately for him, the minute he did, the card fell out of his sleeve unknowingly to him. ]

Rei is bigger and, more notably, much faster. so in his mind the logic follows that closer to the ground, he can beat a hastier retreat by frantically crawling along the ground like the bug he is with the card clenched securely in his teeth. once he skitters a few feet away he rolls over to read it.
