Ideally, attraction doesn't hinge entirely on the basis of looks. Beauty fades, after all, and no matter how you may swoon over a person, no one wants to be left with someone whose personality they can't stand once the blush is off the rose. How much looks matter, then, varies from individual to individual. Still, you can't divorce that facet completely from attraction, can you? There's no way you could fall in love with someone you've never actually seen!
Emotions and affection are strange beasts.
Your character has fallen for a person (?) they've never actually laid eyes on, at least not fully. The two of them have talked - most likely at length, leading your character to feel safe revealing information and growing close - and perhaps the mysterious half has saved your character or pulled strings so events go in their favor. Yet their never actually seen their benefactor, trusted companion, or lover has never stepped into plain sight. They could hide, stay in the shadows, insist on blindfold or covered eyes. They use communicating devices, like phones or computers, or they only come out at night. Maybe your character just cannot see the other; they're blind or the other character is somehow invisible. No matter how tight the bond between these characters is, your character has to wonder what this person (how are we so sure it's a person?) they've come to have such strong feelings for looks like, right? Don't they? Surely, it eats at them, tugging at the back of their mind, despite what they may think they're content with.
Of course, you could also play the character who's keeping out of sight. Whether they have real, deep fondness or love for who they're "hiding" from or if it's all a cruel and elaborate manipulation, their reasons (and methods). There's a danger that follows them and they don't want to bring anyone into the line of fire. They don't want anyone to see their general appearance, their hideousness, their species, their mutation, or their scarring. They could just be shy! Regardless of the situation, they have to know eventually their relative anonymity will come to an end. Hiding from someone who cares for them isn't viable, and when and if the reveal should go over badly, will their merit on personality alone make up for what could be called deception?
HOW TO PLAY
- Comment with your character, preferences, what role you want to play, whether and any pertinent information about your character.
- Reply to others. AUs are welcome here.
- The challenge here is, of course, playing an emotionally charged scene where the characters aren't necessarily facing each other. They may not even know a great deal about each other!
- RNG to determine your prompt.
PROMPTS
- In Hiding: They always keep to the shadows or stay behind walls. No matter what, your view is always obstructed.
- In Disguise: Whether it be a mask or some other kind of costume, they're good at covering up.
- Don't Look: Before they'll speak to you, you always have to close your eyes or put on a blindfold.
- Imprisoned: They're trapped somewhere you can't see into. All you can do is hear their voice...and what they're saying intrigues you.
- Assumed Identity: You can't let them know your real identity, so it's as if you're hiding in plain sight.
- Already Knew: You actually know this person as more than just a voice or a presence, you just haven't put two and two together.
- So in Love with Two: You're in love with someone else..and your beloved visitor. You'll have to choose between them, but they're really one and the same!
- Share and Share Alike: It's easier to be truthful when you can't see how they'd respond.
- Blind: It's a common trope in fiction. One party, who usually feels unwanted or ugly, doesn't have to deal with any preconceived notions because their love interest is blind.
- Come Back: You're afraid you've offended your mystery friend, and you're begging them to come back.
- Shy: You can't reveal yourself to them. You'd never live it down!
- For Safety: Everything and everyone you come in contact with is destroyed. You can't let anyone else in, but you can talk to them, even if that will eventually cause you to be compromised.
- Hideous: How could they care for someone who looks like you?
- Don't Want to Frighten Them: Because of things that have happened to you in your past, you're roughed up and don't want them to see that.
- Not What You Expected: Given how you speak, they would probably expect someone better. More normal. More beautiful. Better.
- In My Time of Need: They always come to you when you need them the most.
- Confession: How can you tell someone you love them when you're not looking them in the eyes!
- Computer or Phone: Whether by accident or through a message board or party line, you've met up and begun to chat.
- Nefarious: If they saw you, it'd be less easy to manipulate them, tell them a sob story, and get them on your side.
- Want You So Badly: You want to touch them. Only touch them, is that so wrong? But you can't.
- Everything But the Face: They've held your hand or hugged you or anything in between. They just haven't seen your face.
- Cupid & Psyche: You had one rule: don't look at you. And what did they do?
- Medusa: See, the thing is...is they can't look at you! Because of a curse or an ability, looking at you will physically hurt or kill them.
- Jack Frost: No one can see you and you'd do anything to change that. Now, at least, you can communicate with someone.
- Tall Tales: You've never been too fond of who you really are. Without them seeing you, you can be anything you want - at least in your "backstory."
- Taken with You: What a wonderful voice! What things they say to you! You'll do what you have to in order to keep them visiting you.
- Fine with What We Have: Their voice and their presence are enough. You don't have to see what they look like. You know the contents of their heart.
- Have to See You: There's nothing else for it. You have to see them, no matter what they say!
- Everything is a Lie: Some things just aren't adding up. You're going to call them out on their stories and demand the truth...and demand that they show themselves.
- Big Reveal: For good or for bad, you're showing them who you really are.
- CHOOSE YOUR OWN
...AND THE OBLIGATORY SMUT OPTIONS
- Invisible Touch: They don't have to see your face for you to make love to them. You can reach out and touch them in the best places possible.
- Dirty Talk: A few choice words are all you need for a little fun.

Erik / Phantom (1990)

The dancers were fond of Gem, letting her stay behind the scenes doing mending and cleaning for them. But only recently she had surprised the opera ghost unintentionally and he had fled, disappearing into the scenery. They had tried to get information from her, but sadly since she was mute she could not tell them anything.
While she had been slightly shaken up from her experience, it left her more curious than anything. So the next night, she visited the same part of the stage, where even though the lights were down, one could see the setting of a painted garden and a very real rose bush. Gem stepped quietly across the stage towards the red roses, picking one of them out and tying a white handkerchief around it. Leaving it on the middle of the stage.
She then stepped away to hide behind a curtain and see if the ghost would find her present of apology for scaring him.

He had been watching her ever since, wary that she might still tell others, but as much as the curious goaded her, she couldn't break her silence if she wanted to.
He's hidden deep in the shadows of box 5 after everyone has left, watching her closely as she sticks around. He has half a mind to scare her off, to chase her away when he watches her, leaving what is clearly a token for him on the rose bush. Wary eyes narrow, but he sees where she hides.
He makes his way down to the stage, but rather than approach the bush, he comes from backstage, sticking deep to the shadows. He keeps a sheer curtain between them, and when he's certain it's only them, he speaks as he watches her from behind the hazy gauze.
"Do not move. What do you want." She may not have a voice, but he knew she was clever enough to show others what she needed.

Slowly, Gem lifts a hand, palm out, as a sort of hello greeting. She was only saying hello. Clasping her hands together near her heart, a sign of apology. Her own heart was beating fast, scared that the rumors were true. That the ghost was killing people and she was going to be next for her curiosity.
She mimes her arms crossed as if someone was going to hit her, was he here to hurt her? Her hand taking away from her throat, she wouldn't and couldn't tell anyone about him anyway. And then, a pleading with her hands together.
Please. Sorry. Don't. Three concepts she tries to get across.

"I'm not going to hurt you." He reassures calmly, though his head can be seen tilting in curiosity at her. That childlike nature of his coming out. "I've never met someone without a voice."

Gem mimes with one hand a floating shape, letting her hand drift out towards the theater. She knows he's the opera ghost who has been haunting here. Scaring people witless. Surely he could meet whoever he wanted if he could fly around, pass through walls, like some people had reported seeing him accomplish.

"As you can tell, I am very real, but I would prefer if you didn't go spreading that around." The curtain between them flutters faintly with a draft that makes its way through the theater. Erik sidesteps carefully, sharp eyes coming around the edge of the curtain as his masked face becomes tangible to her. He keeps a safe distance, studying her.

Despite her pretty face, her dress is plain and mended many times. If the dancers did not like her so, she would have likely ended up in the streets, mistreated for her handicap. Her eyes were quite intelligent, as if she could speak through them without making a sound. Yet she understood speech well enough when it was told to her. The dancing girls called her a diamond in the rough, so they had named her Gem.

"'ey! Whose 'at then?" A man's voice came from one of the entrances to the main hall. He had a lantern in his hand, obviously one of the stage hands checking to see everything was where it should be. Gem's eyes caught the lantern in the dark, her hand on the Phantom's hand as the stage hand sees them. Or rather, sees what he thinks he sees. "She's workin' wif 'im! Get her away quick!" The two workmen came forward with intent on stopping whatever meeting was going on.

She had already scrubbed up ahead of time while the casualties were coming in. Trying to stay off to the side with her fancy scope with a screen on it. It used different wavelengths of radiation, but she had to find just the right patient.
It was amazing to watch how everyone in this outfit worked so well together. She felt so out of place here. In her haste to avoid being hit by an orderly passing, she backed into a doctor who was just coming through the double doors. "Oh! I'm so sorry," she apologized, her cheeks burning with embarrassment under her white mask.

One, she was a woman. Important. Two, she was a woman he didn't know. Also important. Three, she was hanging around aimlessly, so either she wasn't a nurse, or she was a very new one.
He gave her a rakish smile, remembered his mask was in the way, and settled for a thumbs-up. "No harm done. Mind your back, though. Charles is coming through."

He looks up as Father Mulcahy hands him an X-ray, holding it up to the light and squinting. "Damn. Well, you might be in luck. Which is more than I can say for this boy scout."

"You have something?" she asks, immediately interested. If the kid did have internal bleeding, then they were on the clock already. Likely they would be giving him blood while they were trying to find where to stop it. And that would give her an opening to use her scanner.

Reaching over, he peered at the patient's dogtags. "Like hell he's twenty-five," he muttered under his breath, and looked up, waving over one of the nurses. "A-neg. Come on, come on!"

Betty had her equipment all sterilized and ready to go, all she had to do was pull up the isotope in a syringe. "Say the word, doctor..." wait, she never got his name? Just doctor will have to do for now. She knows better than to get in the way of the boy getting blood first. Stabilize the patient, then find the bleeding.
