Growing Closer
![]() On occasion, the fun in playing a romantic relationship is not actually playing the relationship proper, but the build up. The characters grow closer, frozen hearts can thaw, emotional barriers may fall, and insight is gained, both about self and potential partners... ...plus, it can be entertaining as all heck to play either a. awkward dancing around the subject, if your character is that type, or b. embracing all that warming up. A little of column A, a little of column B may scratch an itch you never knew you had. Play one little vignette in time. You may find yourself craving some more.

Hey, Shin-chan. Do you know "CPR"?
[He uses the English loanword; it had come up, in passing, during a skit they'd recently been forced to shadow-exercise, an item in a list of one character's skills. All these little moments to form a gestalt.]
1/2
It's these thoughts that take up his attention when Takao turns to talk to him, the unexpected question momentarily pulling him away from them.]
2/2
[For a moment, he's puzzled by the sudden question but he's quick to find his wit and recall it from memory.]
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation. [He pushes up his glasses.] It's the most essential factor for saving a victim in cardiac arrest out of a hospital.
Of course, I know it, nanodayo.
I'm certified.
[What do you take him for Takao.]
no subject
[He's been to Casa Midorima a hundred times so he's sure he would have noticed by now! The truth is that most certifications are distributed in business card size to provide portable credibility in dangerous situations. Takao not knowing this lends quite a bit of credibility to his explanation for having these questions in the first place.]
I actually don't know much about it, there wasn't a pool or anything in my middle school.
no subject
It's an essential skill to have, not something designated to pool areas.
no subject
[Takao has never seen it in real life! It's a mysterious separate side of Midorima, like most of this career prospect stuff.]
no subject
[Not... exactly. He pushes up his glasses.]
It doesn't matter. What's important is being trained for a situation that requires it not how many times you use it.
no subject
[He picks up his own non-lucky pencil and wags it scoldingly to go along with the impression.]
1/2
An astute observation.
2/2
But you can't go through life with that kind of worthless attitude, Takao. If you already think you're incapable of being useful in a life or death situation, then you will be.
no subject
[It's such classic Midorima, though. That just by thinking hard enough, being conscientious, practice, precautions - that life and death itself is within the grasp of a single human being. Maybe the biggest favor Takao could perform for him is provide an opportunity to practice like it's the real thing.
As Midorima picks up his book, Takao returns his eyes to his own texts, tapping a few words with his pencil (the eraser end, he isn't supposed to write in this school copy of the book and definitely not doodle, he'll get scolded again). The test will be starting any minute now.]
no subject
Midorima is one the first to finish, but instead of handing in the quiz he takes the extra time read over his answers making extra sure he didn't misread a question. Satisfied, he turns in his quiz setting it out of mind while the teacher moves on with a new lesson until the end of class.]

LATER. They're at the pool. After a grueling session, Nakatani announces a five minute break, during which time third-stringers may leave at their discretion.
Takao has lunged down underneath the surface of the water during the second to last rep. And then not surfaced for the last rep. And then still not surfaced during the announcement. After that is around when he begins floating with his face and stomach flat on the surface of the water. This is how it looks right??? Momoi tested him about the time this almost happened to Kuroko.]
no subject
Takao!
[Someone ran up to the edge of the pool, as Midorima raised his head.]
He's not moving!
[Midorima was instantly on his feet, eyes squinting but it didn't matter he couldn't see without his glasses--]
Move!
[He pushed past a first year and dove into the water.]
no subject
He resolves that the worst part is keeping his eyes closed - not seeing the look on his face - as he dangles, alone, with his arms inching further and further towards the floor of the pool]
no subject
He still can't see and but he doesn't need to, he takes control of the situation and yells at one of the players to get help while he drops down in front of him dripping water everywhere and gets to work with the first set of compressions, while his eyes focus on the blurred figure beneath him.]
