● 01 I HAVE A CONFESSION | There's someone you really like and it's finally time to tell them! It can be spur of the moment or elaborately planned out.
● 02 START OF SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL | You've just got together and everything is great! You can't stop thinking about each other or keep your hands off your significant other. You want to spend all the time you can together, doing whatever!

"No its not right. Can I see yours?"

Kieran's voice was an enthusiastic rush; but was quiet all the same. Likely an artifact of always being exposed to the quiet... there were few other children of an age to be his playmates which wouldn't present some manner of risk or other to expose him to, and between lengthy lessons, the peculiarities of Orlesian culture as they related to children and heirs...

Lyon and Kieran both sat on the floor, their backs to the cool stone walls. It was one of the better (if less dignified) ways to beat the oppressive summer heat when no one else might be around to see.

"Of course, Master Kieran," answered Lyon, addressing the young boy as he might a young man, his low voice no less quiet, his provincial accent rich and slow-flowing. "But you musn't set it on your face. Yes?" The question itself was mild; but behind his mask, his eyes bored into those of the young boy, asking 'do you promise?'

"Yes," answered Kieran, reaching up with both child-chubby hands, his own clumsily-made parchment mask discarded at his side. Lyon exhaled a patient breath through his nostrils, and with both hands carefully untied the metal mask. All told, it was quite plain; the fine arches and symmetrical holes over the bridge of the nose declared him a servant of the Empress, but there were no further embellishments... and where time and use had worn it, in some places the mask's lustre had been lost.

With an air of grave dignity, he pressed the heavy symbol into the boy's hands, watching him keenly.

Kieran turned it over, investigating every time-smoothed pit in its surface with hands and eyes. At length, Lyon sagged back and shut his eyes, suppressing the urge to let his relief show.

"Why is yours different from the other palace elves?" Inquired Kieran almost immediately, and when Lyon cracked an eye open to look down at the boy, saw him holding the mask up before his face so he could peek through its eye holes without technically wearing it.

A corner of his mouth twitched ruefully up.

"Only different from many of the other palace elves you see," corrected Lyon. "Many others have this mask, whom you may never meet. Why do you think it's different, Master Kieran?"

"Because you're different," was the immediate, brow-furrowed response, muffled by the closeness of the mask to Kieran's face.

"Because my task is different," corrected Lyon, lifting his knuckly, long-fingered hands to rub a little at his face-- his cheeks, the hollows of his eyes, his brow... being without the mask made him feel exposed, suddenly too chill.

"The Orlesian Court is a meeting of many wolves, Master Kieran. And all the different lords and ladies and dukes and so forth are the leaders of their own packs. And as true wolf packs share scents and songs to tell who is friend and who is foe, so too do masks protect the servants and loyal men of lords and ladies. It allows them to each identify each other with ease, but protects their identity from clever enemies. But forests might only have a few wolves, and the Court has many thousands; and so masks not only tell friend from foe, but also his place in his own pack. These markings here, see; they show all others I belong to the Empress. And here, the cheeks and brow: I am worth very little. The kind of material, the way it is worn: I am a defender, and death is my honor."

They had not even heard the creak of the door, which was half-obscured by a nearby desk.

"What does that mean?" Inquired Kieran, growing bored of the simple object at last, handing it back with a huffed sigh. He tried to fan the hem of his tunic to cool himself still further, and small ringlets of dark hair clung to his sweat-damp forehead.

Just watching him made Lyon pluck at the neckline lacing of his own tunic in renewed awareness of the heat, while the other hand accepted his mask.

"It means that you can see my face beneath the mask, because there is a bond of trust and loyalty between us. And many of the other servants, and the Empress herself, and those few others who are briefly a part of us. But all the others?" Lyon meaningfully replaced the mask, the words intoned, his expression utterly straight. But he sneaked a discreet wink at the boy, to make him laugh, and began to retie it into place.

"Shall we see if a shaded pavilion by the fountain is untended, Master Kieran?"
