THE MAROONED MEME



When you’re stranded. When there’s no way out.

At least this you’re not alone.

WHERE ARE YOU STRANDED?
1: Island. Surrounded by the ocean, shipwrecked on an island. Far away from any civilization.
2: Planet. Is it an uninhabited wasteland? A teeming forest, crammed with alien life forms? Does it have enough oxygen? Storms? Predators?
3: Moon/Asteroid. Low atmosphere, low gravity. You better hope that you have a survival pod where there’s enough air and heat.
4: Adrift. A ship on the ocean; a power-dead space station; a skimmer floating through the levels of a gas giant.
5: Oasis. Not quite marooned in the same sense, but you’re surrounded by empty desert, too far to cross. You might as well be trapped by the water of the oasis.
6: Cave. Again, not quite in the same sense, but something has left you trapped underground. Did you slide down a chasm? Suffer a cave-in? Either way, you’re down here to stay, for the time being.
7: Other.

WHO’S WITH YOU?
1: A friend. You’re in this together.
2: An enemy. Maybe war brought you both here, and war left you stranded behind. Could be that you’re an enemy in a more mundane sense: school rivals, an assassin and her prey.
3: Strangers. You were both on that boat for vacation, and now you have to survive together.
4: A lover. Some honeymoon, huh?
5: Other. For any other variation.

WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?
1: Food and water.
2: Shelter. There’s a storm coming. The nights are cold, here. Or do you just want a sense of security?
3: Communication. How can you get someone to come rescue you?
4: Predators. Something’s trying to kill you…
5: Escape. If you can just fix the ship…
6: Each other. One more hour and you might kill each other.
7: Injury/Disease. One of you needs medical attention. Hopefully the other can muddle through.
8: Other. Any other problem you can think up!

Some things Hobbie had just gotten used to. Like getting shot down in battle and waking up in a bacta tank. Though truth be told, it didn't happen nearly as often as the rumors about him suggested. Of course, he'd helped spread more than a few of those rumors himself. It made things more entertaining when he shot down new pilots in the sims in record time.

And he hadn't even gotten shot down this time. Not exactly. But one couldn't really count a huge piece of shrapnel from a nearby exploding ship traveling at thousands of kilometers an hour slamming into his X-wing as 'getting shot down'. It was more in the 'act of some god' category and Hobbie didn't have a protocol droid around to calculate the odds of his surviving the subsequent crash for him. Really he thinks I should be at a sabacc table right now. With this kind of luck, I'd become filthy rich in an hour.

Instead he's dirty, scraped, bruised, and a tiny bit singed. Which is far better than the other guy he's come across who seems to have crawled out of the aforementioned exploding ship that nearly killed him.

There was something incredibly unfair about the universe dropping her on this insanely hostile planet after she’d just survived half decade of war and imprisonment. It was like some higher power wanted to have a good laugh watching the mutant continue to struggle just to survive, so why not have the portal drop her in the middle of a forest with poisonous vegetation and seven foot tall brown aliens that blended in with the wildlife and thought she’d be a delicious addition to the dinner menu? And if all of that hadn’t been weird enough, she’d managed to run into another human – from Earth, at that, just not her Earth apparently. Sadly.

They’d managed to escape the alien compound with all their limbs, and between trying to find food that wouldn’t kill them and a place to sleep that wasn't frequented by the local wildlife they’d noticed that while this alien species didn’t seem to venture off-world much, they did seem to have trade set up with another species. It had been Peter’s idea to try to steal a ship, and in theory it had been a pretty good.

In execution? Not so much.

Which was why they were running through the forest, the incoherent shouts of their pursuers thankfully growing more distant but still far too close for comfort. “I thought you said you’d done this before,” she practically growled out between huffs of breath as she ducked under a low-hanging branch, her Mississippi drawl coming out stronger than usual.

[this place-- it's quite literally a wasteland. nothing but desert and dust as far as the eye can see, a desolate open space under huge empty skies that leave him feeling dizzy, disturbed. The wind whips sand against his skin and up behind the lenses of his glasses, it's hot, the sun beating down unrelentingly and there is nothing (nothing) about this planet that he doesn't hate.
