[Pizza and ice cream dates weren't exactly predictable, considering their schedules, but she'd really been looking forward to this weekend, they were both free, it was Steve's turn to pick the movies which meant they'd almost definitely be things she hadn't seen before—but there's no beach party like a Cat Grant staff beach party, 'cause a Cat Grant staff beach party is mandatory. And also she was planning it. Apparently.

So she'd had to call and cancel, and calling was better than texting, although she knew she'd sounded as disappointed as she felt, she was still terrible at hiding that kind of thing, but she'd jokingly said that of course he could come, if he could get himself across the whole country to the other coast. It was definitely an official invite from a representative of Ms. Grant's office.

Everything had come together, as it always did, but she can't help standing a little back from everyone else, fading into the background when they weren't looking, and pulling out her phone.]
