Sometimes imagining the future is exciting, sometimes it's scary; however, nothing compares to actually experiencing it firsthand. Either through the natural passage of time or a time displacement mishap, you have now arrived 10, 20, even 30 years into the future. Where are you now and is it where you wanted to be? Or did it go very, very wrong somewhere? Hero-turned-villain, villain-turned-hero, the apocalypse... there are so very many bad ends out there. Hopefully you'll luck out and see something amazing like world peace or, at the very least, a loving family and friends surrounding you.

[A lifetime of hard work, shrewd scheming and ballsy daring had finally paid off. Hux had known since he was a child that one day he would rule the galaxy. His father had filled his head with tales of the Empire and he’d grown up wanting to recapture that glory. Only to discover all too quickly that the incompetence of others and a lack of vision in those running the First Order stood in the way of that former glory.
If you wanted something done right, you had to do it yourself. That manta drummed into him from childhood was the basis on which he built his entire career. His father had instilled in his son of a firm sense of discipline and while some weak-willed souls might protest Brendol Hux’s parenting methods, there was no denying the effectiveness of that training. The younger Hux had attained the rank of General by the unheard of age of thirty.
The only wrinkle in his career had come about at the hands of Kylo Ren and the loathsome resistance. Losing Starkiller could have sunk his career but Hux had prudently cultivated political alliances throughout his career. Enough so that he was able to escape the loss of Starkiller Base relatively unscathed.
Shortly after the Starkiller debacle, he’d secured a political marriage with a daughter from a minor branch of the House of Kuat. Through his marriage with Katri Kuat, Hux eventually came within the span of a few heartbeats from gaining control of the entirety of the Kuat Drive Yards. And while there was little in the way of strong attachments or passion in their marriage, the beautiful blonde Katri looked elegant standing beside him and gave him a new sense of legitimacy.
With the birth of their son and a daughter, his legacy was only further cemented. His close ties with the family which designed and built the majority of the First Order’s ships only helped him further his dreams of one day ruling the Order. And while his children would never be allowed to join the ruling echelons of the Kuati clans, Hux still used his political sway to gain appointment to the Senate via the Clan of Kuat. Supreme Leader Snoke and his inner circle were old men swiftly dying off and while the old bastard seemed content to live on for eternity, it was Hux’s generation that was beginning to fill the ranks of the true power players in the Order.
The former general and now Lord Hux had served with most of them and while he might not have made a lot of friends over the years, he had managed to instill a hefty amount of fear and respect in the scions of the First Order. Fear and respect was worth more than any friendship in his book anyway. But the higher he rose, the more attention he garnered, the more fraught with peril his life became.
Katri Hux along with her father, mother and forty members of her extended family died at the hands of a bomber with suspected ties to the New Republic. An emergency meeting of the First Order Senate had prevented Lord Hux from attending the wedding of his wife’s third cousin, the newest Kuat of Kuat. With his son already enrolled in academy, it was reported a miracle that his young daughter escaped the bombings because she had been too fussy the extended religious ceremonies.
Political detractors commented on how convenient it was that Lord Hux and his children happened to escape the bombing that had devastated the Kuati government. Hux might not have loved Katri with any great passion but she’d still been the mother of his children and they had worked well together to help further his ambitions. And while he had not been behind the death of his wife, he was too much of a pragmatist to mire himself down with any true mourning but instead played the grieving widow with a dignity one would expect out of a son of Brendol Hux. And with the power of the now unified Kuat clan behind him as well as a favorable amount of public sympathy as a widowed father of two, Hux was able to win an election that secured his entry into the High Council as the newly elected chancellor of the Senate.
Less than five years after, when it came to enact his coup, Hux took a page out of Palpatine’s rulebook. He finalized his control of the Senate and key factions in the Order before implementing his coup. In the course of one blood soaked night, Snoke and the members of the High Council who were not already in Hux’s pocket were eliminated. There were rumors that Kylo Ren himself had dispatched the Supreme Leader but no one could say for certain what happened that night.
What did happen after however was that Lord Hux stepped in as interim leader of the First Order. Over the next six months, anyone who might have challenged Hux’s control of the Order was dispatched by either Ren or one of his Knights. And at the age of forty-seven, and almost forty-four years after the battle of Endor, Brendol Hux II was appointed as the second Supreme Leader of the First Order. Of course, even after achieving his life’s dream, there was still far too much work to do and Hux had never been one to rest on his laurels.
He immediately implemented policies that won the support of the people even if it made the more staid members of his cabinet despair. But he’d had over thirty years to formulate his plans for not only the First Order but for the galaxy itself. Community enrichment and work programs were brought to the furthest corners of the Order as was as plans for more infrastructures and a centralized economy. The more hidebound members of the ruling class were up in arms at such policies but with a man like Kylo Ren serving as his assassin, even those voices were silenced soon enough.
What had started out as a fringe military junta on the edges of the Unknown Regions had evolved with Hux and within a year of securing his position as Supreme Leader, that rule had extended to encompass almost the entirety of the Outer and Mid-Rim planets.
It was said he had set his eyes on the Core Planets next and was gearing up to squash what remained of the Republic.]

His failure on Starkiller had meant he was punished severely by the Supreme Leader. It wasn't the first time doubts had been seeded in his mind, but they were compounded by what happened next. Snoke's wrath didn't just fall upon him, it fell upon Kylo's beloved knights. There was only a few things Kylo truly cared about in the whole rotten universe and his fellow knights were one of them. When he was ordered to kill one of them in cold blood to prove himself, Kylo did it, but it cemented the doubts that his father had tried to seed in his mind. He was just a pawn to Snoke, and someday, he was going to be eliminated.
His temper no longer the fiery, uncontrollable rage of his youth, Kylo waited for the opportunity to present itself. The years rolled by and Kylo found more knights to rise up against the new Jedi Order that his uncle and Rey were attempting to form up from the ashes. He even took on an apprentice, a sullen, quiet boy that he'd kidnapped from some backwater planet and twisted to the Dark Side with promises of power. He knew there was someone else watching and waiting for the same opportunity he was. So it was that he and Hux came to form a shaky alliance.
Then came the night when Snoke was destroyed. Kylo hadn't come out of it unscathed, but most importantly, he'd come out of it alive. The legacy of the Sith, of an apprentice betraying his master, had come full-circle once more. There was no desire in Ren to sit as the leader. He was never meant for the world of politics and slick backstabbing that went on in that arena. He was content to see Hux sitting as Emperor.
Now they were close to achieving the dream both had been working more than half their lives for. Soon, a lasting peace would be achieved. Kylo waited as a meeting between the Emperor and his inner circle had concluded, sitting in the background as the ominous presence of Hux's loyal attack dog. When it concluded, the rank-and-file left, and the two of them were alone together. He spoke from behind the mask he still insisted on wearing.]
It won't be long now. We're close. [But even after all these years, he couldn't resist needling the man he served.] So long as they don't snatch victory away from the jaws of defeat once more.

At the time, Hux has been unable to prove it had been Snoke who had been behind the attempt on his life but it was the most logical of choices. Snoke had feared his power and had sought to kill him. Unfortunately, all he’d accomplished was killing innocent people and very nearly endangered the life of his child.
And that was something Hux could never forgive. He had no idea how to be a father considering what his own childhood had been like and how his father had treated him. As soon as his son had been old enough to enroll in the junior classes at the academy, Hux had shipped him off to it. Not because wanted to repeat his father’s mistakes but because he wanted his child to have a good, solid Imperial education. One where he was taught discipline and the values of the Empire. He certainly wasn’t going to follow the weak and undisciplined example of the Republic!
Kylo Ren was practically a walking, talking advertisement of what would happen when one was raised with the soft-handed approach of the Republic. And that was nothing he wanted for his children. They were his legacy, and Snoke had endangered that! Less than a year after the attack, Kylo Ren had walked back into his life.
The Knight was different. More somber and lacking that fiery temperament that had been the bane of his existence back on the Finalizer. Snoke had broken something inside of his apprentice and it chilled Hux to watch him.
Now he found himself tied in some uneasy existence with the Knight. One where he needed his strong right hand and willingness to do anything that was asked of him. Hux had little interest in becoming a despot. But a firm sense of discipline was needed. He’d learned from the former Emperor’s mistakes and would not repeat it. The fact that after a decade he and Kylo Ren had found some common ground in their shared hatred of Snoke, that now they seemed to be reenacting the dynamic of the Emperor and Darth Vader had not escaped him.]
It won’t, not this time. [Pale eyes cut over to that masked visage. He’d always thought the helmet was a bit too much and he privately surmised Ren was just as wrapped up in his love of theatrics as always.] Not unless you’re feeling the sudden urge to run off in the middle of battle and commit matricide?
[It wasn't well-broadcasted in the Order who Kylo Ren was or who he had been. But Hux knew and used it to needle the man just as Ren used his past failures against him. Older and wiser they might be but some things remained the same.]

If there had been any other way, Kylo would have taken it. But Supreme Leader Snoke was too brutal and unpredictable. Killing his fellow knights had made something snap inside Kylo. Then came the matter of his apprentice. While Kylo would have made a horrendous father, he was a surprisingly good teacher. He'd fostered a genuine sense of loyalty and even a twisted sense of affection between him and the boy. Determined not to make the same mistakes, he'd made sure that if his apprentice betrayed him, he'd see it coming from the front instead of being stabbed in the back.
Hux's jab riled him up just a little. While his temper had been honed with the passing years, he was still quick to anger.]
The General will fall. But only in good time. [And, if Kylo was being perfectly honest, by someone else's hand than his own. Taking his father's life had taken all of his strength and he knew he lacked the courage to do it again. Sith he was, but familial ties had long brought those in his family to destruction. Just look at his grandfather.] Be careful that your arrogance isn't your undoing.

The petty squabbles they'd had once, even the traded barbs now seemed rather pointless in the grand scheme of things. But Kylo Ren had proven himself to be a loyal ally thus far and the fact that he'd now put his propensity for rage-fueled tantrums and destruction almost made him palatable to be around. Hux didn't offer to summon a physician or a medical droid for the Force-user because long experience had taught him that Ren hated to appear weak or in need of aid. It was a sentiment Hux could sympathize with.]
I'm not concerned with Organa. We have them on the run and clinging to what remaining territory they have. [He reached up to scratch at his cheek the dark red beard growing there. Near his fortieth year, Hux had grown tired of still looking like some fresh-faced recruit and had started to grow that neatly kept beard. He'd already begun to transition from the military into politics by then and it certainly helped lend him a sort of regal air. Brendol Hux was no doubt rolling over in his grave and he'd be lying if a part of Hux wasn't secretly pleased to flaunt his long-dead father's sentiments on such things.]
It's not arrogance. We're going to win this war. So long as my commanders keep in mind that a cornered enemy is a desperate and dangerous one, I'm hoping we'll have this whole business taken care of in less than a year. [It would be because while Hux might have retired his general stripes and hat, the man was still one of the most gifted tactician in the entire First Order. Less than a decade of civilian service hadn't robbed him of his edge in that regard.]
[ooc: I saw this and was drooling all over my keyboard. Hux can totally grow a sexy beard when he grows up and becomes emperor. And that too in case you didn't see it. Bless tumblr.]
ahfhejfe bearded Hux is something I didn't know I needed in my life
He rubbed his leg where the prosthetic attached to the stump of his real one until the aches had subsided to something more reasonable. Looking at Hux there with his beard and thinking of the few gray hairs that were hidden beneath his helmet, it was a shocking realization that he and Hux were close to middle-age. When had that happened? Kylo leaned forward, elbows perched on his knees.]
Do you ever wonder what we're going to do when it's all over? [Both of them had spent their entire lives caught up in a war zone. Even before he'd been truly aware of it as a child, it had permeated Ben's life. His mother and father had always been off on some mission for the Resistance, pushing back against the remnants of the Empire. By the time he was old enough to fully understand what war meant, it was all he had known. Switching sides merely meant fighting the enemy from a different perspective. The war had never stopped, only evolving and growing.
Now that they were so close to the end, it seemed almost unreal. He'd never allowed himself to look towards the future. Just focusing on what was to be done a year or two out was enough. He didn't know what he'd do without an enemy to fight. Kylo was a knight, first and foremost. He was meant to be an attack dog. Having no one to direct his energies at...it produced a hollow feeling inside.]
I knoooow. I didn't know I needed it my life either.
After all, Hux had plotted to overthrow his leader and claim his seat of power. He’d left a small trail of bodies to gain his lofty position not to mention the wholesale slaughter of the Hosnian system almost fifteen years ago now. The man had never shown an ounce of ability when it came to the Force but he was one touched by the Darkside all the same.
Now there were threads of gray working its way through red hair and a fine network of crows-feet edging the corners of his eyes. Some mornings, he found his joints ached and creaked and his back hurt as though someone had stabbed him in it with a vibroblade. Hux had never been certain he would reach middle-age much less see a full life because a soldier’s fate was too precarious. He'd survived against the odds and outlived most of his enemies, including the Supreme Leader.]
When this is over? I fear it will never be fully over, Ren. Even when we crush what is left of the Republic, there will always be someone who seeks to flaunt our control. The pirates and smugglers who operate with impunity because we have concerned ourselves with the Resistance for so long, as well as the Hutts and other forms of lawlessness will need to be brought to heel. I don't think we will ever truly run out of enemies who need to be crushed.
[Hux smiled wryly but the humor didn’t quite touch his eyes as he looked over at Kylo.] I don’t think we will ever know true peace in our lifetimes. But if we work hard perhaps my children and even your apprentice might be able to live to see that kind of lasting peace.
[He gestured at the holo-map still displaying on the table in front of him where the blood red colors of First Order controlled space encircled the few Core Worlds still capable of putting up any kind of fight.] Besides, we’re both of us creatures of war, are we not, Lord Ren? I don’t think either of us would know what to do with ourselves on peace.

The next of Hux's words caused his mouth to twist into a cynical expression beneath his helm.] I sometimes wonder if my parents didn't have the same idea. 'Work hard enough and peace will eventually follow.' But it never does.
[The galaxy had been filled with war for a long time, longer than the two of them had been alive. If it hadn't been the Resistance, before that, there had been the Clone Wars. He was sure there would be even more if he looked back further into the past.
Still, he couldn't complain. Kylo Ren was first and foremost an attack dog. He was good at what he did. If he had no one to kill, he wouldn't know what to do with himself. He suspected Hux wouldn't either. They had been fighting battles all their lives. Why stop now?]
Knights are meant to fight. So are soldiers. [He still saw Hux as one, despite how long he had been a politician and Emperor.]

[Hux was a pragmatist to the bone. He didn’t incorporate lies to soften the truth or believe in accepting them just because something was hard to swallow. You had to face reality head-on and could not shrink away from it no matter how awful it might be.]
If your parents had been even remotely competent, perhaps that dream would have come to pass. All the best intentions in the world mean nothing in the end if you cannot implement them in an orderly and properly planned out manner. The Republic was founded by traitors who had no idea how to properly run an Empire. They specialize in destroying order, not creating it.
[He spoke so dispassionately about the failed hopes and dreams of Kylo’s parents.] We will succeed where they have failed, Lord Ren. It will not be easy and it will take a lifetime of work which we may never see completely to fruition but I am certain of that.
[Hux had been blessed—or cursed depending on your viewpoint—with an unwavering certainty in his own personal path. And he spoke of it with such conviction that he could sway the very hearts of men and women across the galaxy to believe in his vision. ]
I agree which is why I will be with you when we close this campaign. [His advisors would cluck and protest but as Ren had said, he was still a soldier at heart and it was hard to run a military campaign from half a galaxy away. That had been Snoke’s error. He’d allowed himself to become too far removed from the day to day life of the First Order and it had given Hux the opportunity he needed to usurp the man’s command.] It’s been too long since we served together on a campaign, Ren, I find myself almost nostalgic.
[Almost being the operative term because he still remembered what a monumental pain the ass Kylo Ren had been.]
