February Hugs

Hug Meme: Classic Version

Post with your character, canon, and any notes/preferences. (If it is normally impossible for your character to give or receive hugs, like if they don't have limbs or are incorporeal, be sure to tell us whatever you're changing for them to participate.)

Tag other people; either roll a number from 1 to 8 or pick a hug, and give them that hug.

1. Friendly Hug: The default hug; a hug as a show of platonic affection. Is it a normal hug, or a pouncetackleglomp? You decide!

2. Romantic Hug: Can't kiss your lover right now, or just want to change it up a bit? Give them a romantic hug!

3. Comfort Hug: They look so sad... give them a hug to cheer them up!

4. Awkward Hug: You really don't want to give this person a hug; maybe you just had a fight, or you're just too stoic/manly/badass to do hugs in general. Too bad, you have to give them one. Do your best!

5. Scoop Hug: In addition to a hug, the hugger picks up the huggee slightly off the ground. Works best when they're bigger and stronger, but hey, seeing little girls try to pick up 6-foot badasses is cute too.

6. Surprise Hug: Sneak up on them from behind with a surprise hug!

7. Violent Hug: Hugs are supposed to be friendly, what gives? Whether you're squeezing the wind out of them or are just getting them into the perfect position for a backstab, you're only giving this person a hug in order to hurt them.

8. Other: Reroll, pick your own, mix and match, etc.

Since he's not really sure he knows how to do the other very well--let's be real, when he goes up to the fourth floor to "fix" the computer, he really just unplugs and replugs it and watches all the secret footage--he decides to go with step one. Except he's not entirely sure what's got Aigis feeling a little off. Yet it's evident in the way that she's not so much observing the conversations in the lounge as usual, but completely removed from it.

So Minato just decides to stand next to her towards the back near the stairs, hands casually in his pockets. ]

Hey.

[What's getting her down? Probably something related to her being a modern-day Pinocchio, is a pretty good guess. She's cursorily observing the lounge, but not really watching the rest of SEES as she normally does.

Her audio sensors pick up even faint footfalls, so she's not taken by surprise by Minato's approach. She turns to him, her expression brightening.] Hello, Minato.

Are you having a good evening?

[This is how people customarily greet each other, after all.]

[ She has gotten much better at blending in, in regards to human customs and reactions. Though there's something about her that just doesn't fit into that category, something he considers more uniquely Aigis. But still, she's leaps and bounds beyond what one might have expected when they first met her on Fukushima.

But, bolts and gears or bones and blood, there's a different feel in the air around her when she's not being her usual self. She's his friend, so it's concerning either way. Small talk is easy enough to begin with.

He nods simply. He hasn't decided whether they're going to Tartarus that night or not. ]

Are you?

[There's a moment of hesitation on her features, as she tries to decide what to say. It's a remarkably human reaction, all told; given that her electric brain should be capable of making the decision nearly instantaneously. But this is what it means to have a sense of 'self.' This is what it means to possess a Persona.

Minato is one she trusts, perhaps above all else. He has shown willingness to help her with her conundrums and difficulties. So she feels comfortable, she decides, asking the question that's been on her mind this whole night, the question that's kept her occupied.]

...what does food taste like?

[ Oh.

Yeah, there's never been a good user manual for this. Maybe it's somewhat ironic that someone who seems so disconnected with his emotions most of the time is the one who ends up coaching Aigis through this the most. He does feel for her in his own quiet way. Somehow she seems to be gaining a better understanding of what it means to be alive than he does.

So, as always, he thinks on how to answer her question. How does one describe taste at all? ]

Mm...It depends on the kind of food. [ A beat. What did he have for dinner that night? ] Sometimes it's sweet or savory...or salty. [ Eh, that doesn't really do it justice, does it? ] Were you thinking about any one thing? [ Probably not, but it might help narrow it down for him. ]

[Because this is an alternate universe where Shinjiro lived and everything was happy for the SEES kids or something.] Aragaki-senpai and Yamagishi-san were making... okonomiyaki? "A Japanese savory pancake featuring fried ingredients, considered characteristic of the Kansai and Hiroshima regions."

I know what it is. My memory contains definitions for all of those terms. But even if I can define terms like "savory," "sweet" and "salty," I... I do not know what they feel like.

[ She's presented an interesting conundrum for him. How can he describe a taste to someone who has no basis in what taste even means?

Hm...well...she understands touch. And she is definitely capable of feelings. Maybe he can put it into terms that she can relate to more easily. Minato thinks for a moment. ]

Savory is like...looking forward to something, like a fullness. It's warm and it makes your mouth water because you're excited to eat it. You always want more and sometimes you eat so much you can't eat anymore.

[ Well, Minato has never had that problem, but still. ]

Salty is like feeling your mouth get...drier? With every bite. But it's good. It's a little sharper, it's addicting, and it makes your lips get chapped. You feel it at the front of your mouth.

[ And sweet? Hm. He pauses, before reaching out to take her hand. ]

Sweet is like eating your favorite thing. It's like eating happiness. It's an all encompassing thing in your mouth. It's on your lips and your tongue and your teeth. It's comforting when you eat it.

[She listens to what he says, how he describes them, trying to comprehend, trying to memorize every word of his explanation. Her eyes are closed, giving her electric brain time to focus on his words. They make sense, in a way. Somehow, he always manages to.

When he's done, her immediate answer is only two words, but they manage to convey a surprising amount of emotion.] I see.

[She looks at him, lips turning into a smile.] I believe I would like to eat sweet things, then.

What do you like that's sweet?

[ It's difficult to describe it, he realizes, but he hopes he does okay. He knows that Aigis would probably take his word as law no matter what, but as it enticing as it is to mess with people--sorry, Bebe, Hasta La Vista--he doesn't actually want to mess with Aigis. Mostly. Definitely not on things like this.

He's not too surprised by her answer, but it does draw a small, but visible smile to his own face. ]

I like a lot of sweet things. [ Girls included, but, you know... ] Mochi is good. You can get that in different types of sweet.

Mochi. [For a moment, she seems to be in thought, accessing her knowledge banks.] A traditional Japanese rice cake, made by pounding rice into a paste. It is a traditional food for the New Year.

Mochi is... sweet. [And she smiles again. It's more than just updating her database with new information. It feels good to learn, to be taught like that.] Minato-san. We should get mochi together sometime.

[ He nods. Yes, mochi is sweet, especially depending on the kind of filling inside of it. She might like sweet dango too...at least in theory. Considering all the different upgrades and abilities that she does have, he wonders if something like taste could be learned? The fact that she can feel is a pretty big deal in and of itself.

At her suggestion, his smile twitches upward just a little more. ]

We can do that. [ Hmm... ] You can pick out different flavors and I'll tell you what they taste like.

[She visibly perks up at the suggestion. Not only spending more time with Minato, but learning something like that... learning more about what it's like to actually be human, to be real... it makes her happy. Genuinely so.] Yes.

I would like that very much. I would like to try all of the different flavors.

[Her smile flickers for a moment.] It would be nice if I could actually eat them.

[ He really does want to be supportive. Minato can be kind of an endearing ass at times, but Aigis brings out a softer side to him. It's hard not to notice the slight falter in her expression despite a lukewarm solution to this issue. ]

Then we'll try them all.

[ He wishes that he had a better idea, though. It would be nice. ]

Hey...

...I'm sorry, Minato-san. [Aigis looks down and to the side, and does a remarkable approximation of a human sigh.] Perhaps it is selfish of me. There are a great many advantages to how I currently exist.

There is a human expression, I believe. "The grass is always greener...?"

[She does not seem to have convinced herself.]

[ It can seem that way, doesn't it? He's never been someone who's ever been particularly envious of others--that would imply he had many wishes or goals growing up. But it's not really envy that she's feeling, either. It's a disconnect and sadness and...that's something he actually can relate to.

So, instead of saying anything, he just reaches out and gives her a hug. ]

Ah-- [She seems surprised by this, by his arms around her.

Her sensors instantly pick up as much data as she can. She can feel his heart rate. Approximately 80 BPM. His body temp is just shy of 37 degrees C.

Her sensors don't explain why she suddenly feels like she does, though. Slowly, her mechanical limbs curl around his body in return.]

[ A hug is a very simple, but very human thing to do. He's probably had more hugs in the past year than he's had his entire life. But she seems like she needs one. He just hopes that it'll translate the same way.

There's a long pause as he lets the hug just be what it is before he pulls back. ]

You're fine just the way you are, Aigis.

Thank you, Minato-san. [She says, softly, waiting for the telltale muscle movements that would indicate for her to let go. They come long after she'd expected them, to, and she releases him.] You are, as well.

You are... sweet.
