[ it's her's and yuu's turn to keep watch for the night while the rest of their comrades get some sleep. it'd been a long day of doing guren's errands -- driving back and forth through points, ensuring that there isn't anything or anyone suspicious lurking about, slaying a couple of horsemen while they're at it, and so on.

it's been a tiring day and while normally, it's difficult to sleep out here on an empty road with nothing but ash, broken blocks of concrete, rocks, and dirt, the rest of her team are in deep sleep. they deserve having a good rest, knowing how much they exhausted themselves out today.

shinoa spares a glance at yuu, figuring that he'd be tired to the bones too. there's a small smile on her face when she speaks, voice soft so as to not awake their companions. ]

[bored, maybe. he's not as tired as they might think, at least not mentally. it's probably his intense desire to keep the rest of them safe that has him still alert even if his muscles ache and his body just wants to drop down for a few hours.

he's resting somewhat, however, chin in his hand as he looks through the darkness and waits for anything and everything. out here, it's all a possibility.

when Shinoa's soft voice breaks the silence, he glances over at her. even quiet like that, he can't help but here some sort of tease in the tone. he smiles, deciding to take it as a compliment even if he's not for sure if she really is teasing.]

[ what shinoa said earlier had been genuine, this one though, is more of her usual teasing self. she catches yuu's smile, flush creeping over her cheeks, her gaze straying towards their asleep teammates. she's glad that it's dark and their only source of light is fire they made, the redness on her face shouldn't be obvious then. ]

I can say that you've improved with your sword. For once, you didn't get knocked down while dealing with the horsemen.

[ No, Korra can not truly comprehend the importance of their mission -- outside of donning the SeeD uniform and proudly representing Balamb Garden in the company of a few stuffy, overly-verbose scientists. What eats at her is that the excavation team that she has been assigned to protect seems to know all too well that Korra's mind swims with all this talk of permineralization and adpression and carbonaceous films that inhabits the air while they crouch over their precious bones. It's starting to make her feel useless, and useless is never a feeling she's been good at dealing with.

She knows she's really here because of the Malboros. Even from her perch atop a glittering white swell overlooking a grand view of the Great Salt Flats, she can't see the creatures, but she sure can smell them. It's a putrid fragrance that is sickeningly reminiscent of sticky Timber back alleys and wafts of stagnant air from the grates in Deling City, and before she knows it, she is pacing irritably, half-aware that she's probably getting on her partner's nerves just as badly. ]

We should patrol the area.

[ She's cutting the lead scientist off in the middle of what sounds like rambling, multi-syllabic nonsense to her, but she's chomping at the bit to do something of import and see what her partner can do on top of it. She's already walking toward a shimmery outcropping by the time she specifies: ]

[ Quistis, on the other hand, is more than interested in the subject. There is so much about their world's history that seems to have been obscured over time and lost to the ether. Perhaps this might shed some light on more of that, although she sincerely doubts any amount of text will be found in such a place. She was proud to be involved in such an important research project, even if it was only as the Garden liaison and a bodyguard of sorts. When given the opportunity, she indulges in conversation with the scientists but most of the time she tries to keep her head on her shoulders instead of in the clouds.

And she can tell that Korra's losing patience with this. Or, perhaps it's not so much her patience as the excitement of the area. It's so rarely explored these days, especially with the lack of any sort of camps, outposts, or towns out here. Since Esthar's closure to the outside world, the place had become even more barren than it had been decades ago.

It didn't help that the area was engulfed by some of the most powerful monsters their world had ever known. Quistis can't say that she's not feeling the same eagerness; rare monsters yielded rare hides and other usable items that could either fetch a fortune or be used for a variety of features from healing to GF compatibility, to weapons and armor. It would be a lie to say she wasn't interested in that aspect, although the challenge was also appealing to some degree.

Before she replies, she offers a curt nod and apologetic look to their employers. ]

She is right. I apologize for the abruptness, but it seems I've let my guard down while enjoying our talks. We'll take our leave for now, but I would enjoy continuing this discussion at a later point in time.

[ Quistis can only shoot Korra a look. The payment was already agreed upon, but they were representing Garden. And for her, it was an important task and one that reflected upon her own skill to some degree. She was a professional and wanted to be known not just as the best, but the best of the best. She hesitates a moment with the scientist, more small apologies that she almost can't escape from the cycle of like her company simply doesn't get a chance to talk much with someone that really listens -- something she once might be able to relate to, even -- but she eventually follows.

Her hand is already at her hip, ready to unfurl her whip at a moment's notice. ]

I don't doubt there may be anomalies that have adapted to their surroundings to camouflage themselves. [ She pauses before she continues, mulling over her thoughts and trying to decide whether chiding her colleague is worthwhile or not. She decides that it isn't. ] Honestly, all the conversation can be a little exhausting. I could use a break to let loose.

Carlos Ramirez wore a lot of hats. Not literally, of course, but as one of the youngest wardens who'd been pushed very suddenly to the head of the line when life hit the fan, he sometimes felt a lot of pressure to be...more. Responsible. Decisive. Diplomatic. More suave with the ladies.

Most of the time, it was really just 'fake it til you make it.'

But he really did have a genuine desire to help people, and to make a difference in the world. So when he saw an attractive young woman wandering around LA looking equal parts enchanted and lost, he didn't go up to her just to try and score the digits. Though he probably wouldn't object if it worked out that way. It rarely ever did. He just hoped she wouldn't pepper-spray him, or something.
