[he waits a second, not quite expectant, just in case Joseph decides to spit something stupid out. when he doesn't his grandson simply shrugs, bringing the cigarette back to hang from his mouth.]

[Oh god damn this would be finished with some kind of insult but half of them would be insulting him by extension and that would be the worst part. He's being played.

[This is accompanied by some hand gestures implying a large moving object ramming into something else.

This isn't really helpful but it's satisfying and instant satisfaction tends to be better anyway.]

[Honestly, Josuke had been feeling pretty awkward about this whole thing. He didn't really know Jonathan (he's probably been fussing over what to call him this whole time), but this was probably a Very Important Journey, and so his awkwardness would have to be put aside for now. Not only that, but they've reached a rest stop—much-needed, he can't even remember how long they've been driving now—but there's something distinctly... off about it. Actually, it's kind of really creepy. It's giving Josuke chills.

He's halfway out of the car once it's parked, aware that there may not be anymore rest stops after this one for a while, but...

H-hey. Are you sure about this place?

[He knows that they shouldn't skip it... But he kind of wants to skip it?! It's creepy, man.]

Not even the shoes? And I thought I got a demanding roommate...

[She says with a little grin. She doubts his roommates actually deny it from walking barefoot. Although her roommate is quite demanding.]

I miss my single room at Blackwell... That's where I went to school before. [She sighs dramatically.] It's not that far from here actually...

Well, that's a pretty great talent to have. I would never give up photography, but I wouldn't mind having better skills there too.

You know, I didn't even realize it at first, how much I liked taking pictures, I mean. When I'd go out with my parents, I would always demand they take a camera and I'd insist on taking most of the pictures...

I especially loved the instant camera my friend's father had... [She smiles at the thought, even though those memories always come with a little bit of sadness in them too.] So I got one too as a birthday present. From that point on it I got really into it...

They were running into fewer and fewer villages as they made their way through the mountain province, which suited Mulan just fine. She'd gotten her fill of strange and suspicious stares earlier on their trip. Her companion was different than most were used to, but she was also a woman who held herself high with pride. It surprised Mulan, and made her want to sit straighter herself. But with two such women riding alone with no other escort, most of the locals they'd encountered just couldn't stop staring, and whispering. Mulan wondered if her charge could understand any of it. She hoped not.

So when they entered the more remote areas of the mountain, Mulan couldn't help but be thankful for the quiet peacefulness of the mountain pass. Garnet wasn't much of a talker, but that was fine. They were making good time with the efficient pace they were going.

"It's not much farther; perhaps half a day's trip?" she replied, with a small smile. "But the road will start winding soon, so we may have to ride cautiously... Unless you're rushing to get there?"

[Phryne's on her own for this adventure and has no pressing engagements. No dead bodies in a whole week! Practically a record! With no murders to solve, she's free to enjoy the glorious weather. And what better way to enjoy it? Why, roaring along the countryside in a cherry-red open-topped motorcar, of course!

Then she spots the tall figure along the side of the road. Dressed very much like a circus performer, though it's the wrong season for it. And miles from the closest town.

Well, that's... certainly interesting! She pulls to a stop.]

[It's been an hour since they somehow manage to escape the fleet's pull in the small shuttle, and as far as they can tell, no one's coming after them ~~yet~~. Octavia's a good friend, really, but when Kurt does the third barrel roll, she's had enough.]

One more time, Blue Man, and I'll be worse than a back seat driver.

[Kurt sighs as he keeps fiddling with the controls, intent on pulling off as many ridiculous tricks as he can.]

[ Gudao beams at his Servant, completely not getting that she lives by a completely different set of values from this mostly ordinary person. He forgets that she's not Gilgamesh and doesn't have infinite money. ]

She blinks at him. DON'T REMIND HER OF BRAINFREEZE AND HER SHAME. He's such a mom!! Or just nagging. Her lips purse. ]

Yes, sir. [ Why is a thug telling her to be more careful? What is her life. ] You should also be careful. You spilled hot cocoa, didn't you? Before that, you had ice cream on your face.

People tended to whisper anytime any of the Crystal Gems were seen. That was inconsequential - they couldn't harm her, and they weren't getting in her way. It was something of an inconvenience that all of this had happened, but the corrupted gem had taken one of the tributaries of fate that she had practically dismissed as truly possible and had hurled a boulder, missing her and hitting the warp pad. She wouldn't make the mistake of discounting any possibility again.

But she'd been asked a question. One she should answer. Lifting a hand from the reins, she adjusted the large, rounded lenses that obscured the entire upper half of her face. It was a gesture that masked how she cast her thoughts forward to the other Gems, if they would be able to handle all that came without her, and the answer, overwhelmingly, was yes.

So she answered in her usual plain tone, "I have no reason to rush. Everything will be fine there."

As long as Rose was there and didn't get distracted. That was always a possibility since she'd discovered humans. But humans were odd everywhere. Reason enough for her to observe, "Your people here have an odd attitude toward women."

[Moments before, a gesture had sent a bubbled gem away to the temple, almost on the complete other side of the world. Too bad, she thought, that she couldn't do the same thing to herself. It would make getting back much, much easier. The nearest warp pad was a long way to the north. She could get there, certainly, but not with any speed.

Or that was her thought until the car (in a colour she greatly approved of) stopped nearby. That was what it took for her future vision to come into focus. If she went on foot, she'd get back to the temple easily enough, but it would take time, and she was rather sure the others would need her before then. The speed of these human-crafted vehicles, however, could make much shorter work of the trip. So her answer, after an adjustment of the large glasses that covered half of her face, was simple.]

Yes. I need to go to the far northern coast where there are three islands visible from shore.

[Garnet walked toward the car without more of an introduction. The nearer she got, the more visible her height was. Not just six but over seven feet, her hair contributing to her looming size.]

Do you know the place?

[ Don't remind him of how lame he is, please. Now he has to one-up her. ]
