[Merlin is just about ready to scream. It's only by the grace of God that he managed to pilot the helicopter down into shallow enough water that they could swim to shore, but abandoning the chopper to the watery depths of the ocean meant losing all their communication gear along with it, and he had been too busy trying not to let them nosedive to their deaths to worry about sending a distress signal. He's not even sure the GPS is still working, which means who the hell knows if and or when they'll be rescued. Which means he's got an indeterminate time stretching out in front of him, stuck on a deserted island with a brand new knight who he's pretty sure doesn't really trust him, for all they've been through already.

Honestly, Merlin can't blame him.

He's pulled off most of his suit, hanging it up in the trees so it at least has some chance of drying out, which unfortunately leaves him in not a whole lot. But the temperature hasn't dropped yet, and Merlin's willing to sacrifice his dignity in order to stave off hypothermia. It's not like Eggsy's some kind of blushing virgin or anything, and Merlin definitely doesn't have anything he's never seen before. It's just the indignity of sitting around in his pants that's bothering him, really, and he's going to push that aside for more practical matters.

He's been busying himself with building a shelter of some sort for them both — thank god for his time in the Marines, that's all he can say; he had a fairly well developed survivals skill set even before he went through Kingsman training — letting Eggsy take point on finding enough dry wood to build them a fire. He's been gone for long enough for Merlin to start getting worried, but he's trying not to dwell on just what horrible scrape Eggsy might have gotten himself into in the forty minutes or so he's been gone. Eggsy's a tough lad. He can take care of himself, as he's more than proven. All Merlin has to do is sit here and wait for him to return, and stare at the rapidly-setting sun like he can somehow will it to slow down, like he can somehow will a rescue to appear out of thin air if only he squints at the horizon long enough.

A sharp crack in front of him drags his attention back to the small little bundle of sticks he's managed to set alight, and he crouches down low again to blow gently on the embers, trying to keep them alive for long enough that they can be added on to. It was bloody hard enough to get this fire lit in the first place, he's going to be furious if he has to start all over again from nothing.]

The heat of the fire was a nice clash to the cool breeze that came in off the ocean and Edmund found himself pulling closer to the flames, holding his hands out in front of him to warm the tips that had started to get chilled in the wind. Bonfires were some of the best parts of nearing the end of a camping trip, and he usually took the time to toss anything he didn't want to lug up to the castle to rot or gather dust on top of the wood pile, letting it crackle and shrivel up with the rest of it.

Worn out as he might have been, as he got comfortable on the sand, any crankiness he might have felt slowly started to fade away. He'd closed his eyes, listening to each pop of air, letting out a long yawn and letting his now much warmer hands fall down into the sand and shifting to lay on his back. He contemplated falling asleep right there, taking a deep breath and letting the smell of sea air wash over him. It was almost exactly where he wanted to be. Relaxed enough to almost not notice the slight shift in sand accompanied by the sound of someone sitting next to him.

Ed cracked an eye, glancing up at his sister, and giving a small smile, thought not going to get up right away. "Ready to be back home?"

[The fire is warm. It feels good through the layers of his clothing, through the wool, the leather, the satin. Frankly, it is rare that he ever feels warm, like this. The starkiller base was always cold; as was the the Finalizer. Space...the expanse of stars and universe spreading out in the darkness...

...he was always cold. Even as a child, he could rarely remember being warm.

But even as he sat by this fire, enjoying the warmth, he didn't put his hands up to the fire as he saw some of his troops do around their fires in the distance. They had made their camp here, preparing for a small assault on a Resistance encampment. Phasma was making final checks with the troops, which left him and Kylo Ren alone for the moment, their camp far enough away that others wouldn't disturb them.

A small detour on the way to Snoke. Where, well. Who knows what might happen. Hux had no true desire to get there quickly. Not after what they left behind on Starkiller, the blood in the snow, the scars that Kylo still carried. Things had changed, irrevocably.

There was borrowed time now. But Hux refused to allow himself to think of that, now (for thinking of that around Kylo meant his mind might be read, and his failure and that failure might mean death and he refuses to allow that he has come too far--).

So instead he thinks of the fire. And how he's glad to have it.]

The words came lamely, but they were all Poe Dameron could offer. The transport had been forced to land after an escaped battle had damaged several of the escort ships. While the main ship would still fly, its pilot was now completely incapacitated. Not exactly the way the first night their guest was to spend in their care was supposed to go.

Still, at least there was a fire, and there was food.

Poe offered a bowl of the stew another pilot had put together. None of them were particularly skilled at cooking, and their supplies were meant for the short term, not for even a proper meal. Thankfully, they all came from different enough walks of life that they could manage to get by.

"We should be back to flying tomorrow."

She wasn't built for extremes of temperature. She could deal with them, of course; she had before and would again. But she was probably too soft, as things stood, for this sort of environment. Naboo was too temperate and most of the senate's chambers were climate controlled. Practically all of Coruscant was climate controlled. That would never mean, though, that she would be too proud to share a fire, or work for her share. Even if it did make people look at her doubtfully in places like this, on a distant, almost lawless planet.

"I keep being reminded of Tatooine, but I think the sand has a different texture." And maybe even a different smell. Drier. More powdery. It made her wonder. "Does anyone have a moisture farm here?"

[ There's a meteor shower at its peak tonight, the kind of thing that would be fantastic viewing from the observatory.

It's also the kind of thing that brings everyone to the observatory. Too crowded, she protests, and she's got another idea anyway. She gets everything ready while he sleeps; when he's up and ready to go he's ushered to the car.

It's forty-five minutes to drive through the city and up the coast to Malibu. Another half-hour to bring things the (thankfully) short distance from the car to the beach proper--two folding chairs, a pile of blankets, a box of firewood, a shovel--the last she uses to dig a quick fire pit. And then, the secret ingredient: one of the Duraflame logs from the house fireplace.

She's got a little magic too. Or at least a good shortcut for getting this whole thing started.

The prepared log takes flame, she piles more wood on, and she lets out a triumphant little yell as the bonfire begins to burn, bright and warm. ]
