Thanks but if it's all the same to you I'll just grab coffee on the way home. [ it's unlikely to be drugged but he'd rather not take the chance. ]
I have enough problem to deal with-the faster I can find the bastard that thinks they can control The Kaitou Kid the better.
no subject
I wasn't involved in the Nightmare case.
[He gets two cups out, but be only puts a tea bag in one. It's so hard to find good English tea in Japan, so he's settling for an import Chinese Oolong.]
I've seen the case files, but Tokyo Metropolitan is of the same calibre as New Scotland Yard. Too many holes. You were involved, though. Closely. And the person who's blackmailing you knows about it. But that's all too obvious.
[He leans on the bar counter, looking over it towards Kid.]
At some point, you learned Nightmare's true identity. The blackmailer is using that as collateral because you feel responsible to Nightmare's son to keep that identity secret.
[All of this is coming from that one little line: The dreams of a six year old thank you. It hadn't been difficult for him to make the connections to Jack Connery who also happened to find himself conveniently involved in the Nightmare case.]

Kenta Connery has a brain tumor that needs to be removed-his father became the Nightmare in order to pay for it. He forced me into working with him and since I had worked out the truth of his identity was going to kill me-however at the moment his son called out to him and he lost his footing.
[ He closes his eyes-death isn't something he enjoys thinking about much less talking about it. ]
I tried to save him but he refused to let go of the jewel in hand. My glove slipped off and he fell. I shot the mask he wore as Nightmare off with the cardgun I couldn't let Kenta find out the truth about the father he looked up to.
I've narrowed it down to the Interpol agents that worked the Nightmare case but that's as far as I've gotten.
no subject
Probably better this way. If he'd used the money to pay for the treatment, inquiries would have been made and he would have been discovered. Wouldn't have been long before he was arrested. And the media would have had a field day.
[This is one of those times he could use someone to act as moral compass. He only realises after the fact that speaking like this about a dead man is a bit callous.
He clears his throat and pours boiled water into his mug.]
I've a list of the Interpol agents directly involved in the case, but I'll need more to go on than that. When were you first contacted by your blackmailer and what did he say?
no subject
[ Kaito points out-his dad would have done the same for him and it's because of that reason he feels personally responsible for protecting Kenta from the truth. ]
The first request came a month ago on the fourth-I ignored it at first as couldn't see a reason why this person had any claim over the painting. The request was made again on the eighth of this month and this time much more insistent.
[ Are you ready for this Sherlock because he's about to change his voice. ]
'I know what really happened the night Jack Connery died. And after you went through such lengths to hide it.
no subject
[Sherlock's well aware of the folly of making bad decisions for good reasons and the painful downfall it can have on the very same individuals one had been trying to protect. It doesn't change what had happened and what would have happened had Nightmare accomplished his task before his untimely demise.
He shakes his head. There's no use getting invested in the outcome of this case, so he pushes all of that aside to focus on the new information.]
Was it a voice recording or are you doing that for effect?
[Kid's skill's rather impressive, actually. The accent and the timbre both change and they change consistently, but he's not going to give Kid the satisfaction of making a big deal about it.]
no subject
[ Once Kaito's relatively sure that there's no traps ready to be sprung on him he sits at the edge of the bed closest the window. ]
My accomplice and I have been trying to see when they collect the stolen paintings from the drop point but somehow that hasn't worked out so well.
no subject
[Sherlock's starting to get that urge to pace around, but he suppresses it and taps on the counter top with his fingertips instead.]
Tell me about your accomplice. And no, I won't go out to arrest him once I have a name.
no subject
Apologies, but the only thing I'll say regarding my accomplice is that he's been with me since the beginning and I would trust him with my life.
no subject
You may trust your accomplice, but he seems incapable of performing the task you need him to.
[He turns his attention back to his tea to remove the bag and then to add some tea and chilled milk he's been keeping in the complimentary ice bucket.]
You've already handed off the painting or I would have suggested leaving me to oversee it. We could still do that with the next one, though I plan to have this solved before then.
no subject
My accomplice is competent enough-we've wired several cameras around all entrance and exit points. No one goes in aside from me and no one goes out. The obvious answer is that he's coming from below so we're trying to get the blue prints to compare with a map of the city.
The problem is that it's an old building so it's it's been difficult to track down.
no subject
[Sherlock reaches for his phone and starts to look through it. It's obvious that there must be some other way in and out of the building and underground is the only thing that makes sense. A helicopter would make too much noise and that would have been picked up by the cameras.]
An abandoned building. Has it been that way for long? What's the address?
[He's already checking through his contacts with the vagrant population. They're around all of the big cities and no one ever pays them any mind. If anyone knows the complete layout of an abandoned building, it would be the ones who might have needed to use it to keep warm over the winter.]
no subject
[ He does kind of have a reputation for putting the worse criminals behind bars. It's not a great reputation to have if you want to network with the other thieves. ]
If I asked the brat detective the blackmailer is likely to end up dead and that Hakuba bastard would never let it go.
no subject
[Sherlock starts typing out a text he'll send to the five leader-types he's designated.]
But I have an invisible group of assistants that could help you with your blueprint problem for a small fee.
[He glances up from his phone.]
All I need is the address to the drop-off building.
no subject
It's the same building that Jack Connery fell to his death in. [ So not exactly his favorite place since it just reminds him that he was unable to save the life of child's father. And loosing a parents was something Kaito wouldn't wish on anyone. ]
no subject
Done.
[He sets his phone on the counter top with the display facing up. He expects to have an answer by the end of an hour and likely much earlier than that. It all depends on who's been there.]
I'm being discreet. No one knows we've been in contact and I'm not telling anyone why I'm asking.
[He's only choosing to tell Kid because he looks so incredibly agitated and nervous. He needs him to keep a clear mind if they want to get anywhere with this.]
Did he leave any other voice or text messages?
no subject
[ He pulls a piece of paper out of his jacket that has somehow managed to keep from crumpling and offers it to the detective. It's a picture of a painting-obviously the next heist. ]
I've already narrowed the list down to five but so far that's as far as I've gotten. [ Which is pretty impressive, he thinks considering he's not a detective. He could have been but where's the fun in that? ]
no subject
It was printed in a library.
[He sighs and sets the paper down on the counter.]
Librarians are particularly hard to work with. They're ethically compelled to keep their patrons' identities and histories secret.
[If he worked with the police and used warrants, that might not be an issue. But that's not how he does things.]
You're good at disguising yourself. Perhaps if we find ourselves at a standstill, you should go nick the sign in sheets for the nearby libraries. A month's worth ought to do it.
no subject
Oi, oi. Just how much free time do you think I have? I now have another heist to plan. [ along with come up with several back up plans, find out if any unwanted guests would be attending said heist, not to mention he still had school to attend, homework to do, and a childhood friend to irritate on a daily basis. ]
no subject
[Sherlock can see the signs that Kid's a student, but that can only take up so much of one's time. Any student-aged boy who can plan out successful thefts of high value items and under maximum security can't have much difficulty with assignments. And as far as deducing Kid's unmasked identity? He's got enough to go on to put the pieces together with some research, but he doesn't care enough to do it.
Well, unless he finds himself in need of Kid's skill set sometime in the future.]
The name of your blackmailer is likely on one of those sign in sheets. Cross-reference that with the list of five Interpol agents you're suspicious of and you'll know who you're dealing with.
[His phone chimes and he picks it up.]
There's an underground passage to your drop off house. You can get to it from the Tokyo Metro tunnels.
[He turns the phone around to show Kid the unlabelled tunnel in question.]
You may alert the wrong attention going yourself, however. Even with the right costume, there's no telling who could be trailing you. I'll have my people look into taking some photographs for me and setting up a surveillance system for the next drop off.
no subject
And being a professional thief is time consuming. [ There's a lot of planning involved after all. ]
besides, I once I know the way they've been entering the building I'll need to find a way to discredit anything that he says afterwards.
no subject
[Sherlock would gladly share more information about his homeless network: Tokyo edition, but not until after they've solved this case. No use tempting Kid to rush off without him. It would only mean he'd have to track down two people instead of just one.]
Once we know who it is, we can choose whether to open up negotiations or to retaliate by other means.
[The option he cares for least is blackmailing the blackmailer, but he's willing to resort to that. Once someone opens themselves up to such a foul profession, they deserve anything that's coming to them.]
no subject
I'm sorry detective, but I'm not about to negotiate anything with someone willing to hurt a child already grieving over the loss of a parent.
[ That little boys whole world was destroyed that night just as Kaito's had been destroyed eight years ago. It takes time to rebuild, to adapt because there is no healing. ]
no subject
[Sherlock's not going to stop him from going and he's not going to stop working the case, either. He's got enough information to continue working on it. He'll do what he can to keep Nightmare's identity a secret, but he'll also do what he can to end Kid's blackmail.]
Your options are negotiation, blackmail, and murder. And you're not a murderer.
no subject
[ All he had to do was find evidence of another crime, get the paintings he'd stolen back, expose said crime and return the paintings to the museum along with an apology. The blackmailer was smart and the efficiency told Kaito that he wasn't the only one. ]
The next step is to find what else he's guilty of.
