The impact of that question knocks the breath from his lungs in one fierce moment, and hurt flashes brightly in green eyes.]
No, I don't.
[He wants the words back as soon as they have left his lips, dark and twisted with emotion. The look on his face betrays them as lies, even if his body had not been tensed with desperation.]
I--
[He swallows, unsure whether to fight or flight in that moment.]
I will only make things worse if I am there.
no subject
Letting out a slow breath in an attempt to calm himself once more, Thor reminds himself that Odin will be under the best of care and can wait just a bit longer. Loki, on the other hand, it seems cannot.]
I should not have said that.
[With little warning, he steps back over to Loki and finally reaches out to grab him, dragging him close into one of his trademark tight, crushing hugs. Perhaps for both of their benefit, as it feels good to be close to someone after everything that has happened.]
no subject
Loki does not even squirm as he has been wont to do these past few years when caught in an embrace. He just stands, still and tense, without making any move to either return or remove himself from the hug.]
I cannot forgive them.
[The words are quiet, almost inaudible, and laced with a subtle implication that it is only them he cannot forgive. Odin and Frigga, for they knew all along and kept it from him. He cannot say so yet, he is too raw, but he cannot in his heart blame or hate Thor. Perhaps if he had been forced to endure this alone, if he had been adrift without kind words or comfort, he may have come to hate Thor just for the blood he shared and the opportunities he had been given.]
I cannot go to them, I would be no comfort or help.
[Finally, slowly, his forehead came down to rest upon Thor's shoulder lightly, taking comfort selfishly even while hating his weakness for needing it.]
no subject
If I go myself, will you wait for me back in your chambers?
[He lightens the strength of the embrace once Loki seems to relax somewhat, hoping he can offer whatever comfort might still be available despite his own despair.]
I... have not spoken to Mother since before the coronation. I've no idea what she might say.
[And that is how he admits his own fears concerning the Queen. Would she too scold him as unworthy, or simply watch him with disappointment? Odin's state is clearly his fault, even if it happened during his discussion with Loki. Had he not traveled to Jotunheim, none of this would have happened.]
no subject
Loki would pull away and return to his own thoughts, the need to sort through them almost overwhelming, but he found that he could not. Thor had provided comfort and warmth to him, he could not walk away without some small attempt to return the favour himself.]
She will only be relieved that you are safe, unhurt, and home, of that I am certain.
[He finally pulled away from the embrace, taking a step backwards. The words of comfort burned on his tongue with jealousy, for he believed them to be true. Frigga would surely give comfort to her son, her only real son.
The need to be elsewhere, to prove himself, to find a way to make this truth less terrifying suddenly overtook him again. He looked up into Thor's eyes and took a further step back towards the door.]
Go, Thor. I will await you in my chambers.
[That, sadly, was a lie.]
no subject
Thank you, brother.
[He allows Loki to step away from him, letting his arms fall to his sides again. It's a relief to know he'll have his company to look forward to after what will undoubtedly be a stressful visit with their parents. After such a heartfelt conversation, he doesn't even consider that Loki might be lying to him now.]
I will see you soon.
[With that Thor turns on his heel and hurries out of the kitchen, on his way to the royal bedchamber. Though tentative at first to speak with Frigga and anxious at the sight of Odin appearing so very fragile, his mother is indeed quick to reassure him that she loves and believes in him. He takes a seat across from her on the other side of the bed as they discuss what has happened, and inevitably the topic of Loki arises. Hearing Frigga explain why they kept the secret... it is difficult to blame them, really. He only hopes his brother will see things the same when he's taken some time to think.]
no subject
Though he had wanted to be left alone, the silence and the lack of a solid presence to anchor him set him further adrift. He paces the kitchen for nearly an hour after Thor has gone, restless footsteps carrying him to and fro as if the cupboards and broken furniture will hold some sort of answer for him.
Brother, Thor had called him again before leaving. Brother. Could he really still allow himself that relationship? Could he allow himself to remain here, always passed over and loved less, and live a lie? No-- No, he cannot. He wants so desperately for the truth to be overwritten, for his world to come right once more.
Perhaps... perhaps if he can prove to Odin that he holds no affection for the Frost Giants. Perhaps if he proves that he is a true son of Asgard, then he will be accepted. Then he can look at himself and believe he is worthy to stand in these halls.
It is reckless desperation that sends him on his way. Not towards his chambers where he promised to meet Thor, but towards the observatory and Heimdall. He will go to Jotunheim. He will do what Thor tried to do, he will do what needs to be done. He will bring back the head of Laufey, he will make a present of it to Odin to show where his loyalties lie. Maybe then, when he has proven himself the sort of hero that Asgard lauds, maybe then he will be seen as equal.
Heimdall counsels against such a foolhardy trip, but he cannot deny the order given to him. His King is in the Odin-sleep, the elder son disgraced, so he knows he must give fealty and obedience to the younger son, though it troubles his heart to do so. The Bifrost is scarcely closed once more before he sends for Thor, having not been ordered to keep his peace.]
no subject
Odin had taken away Mjolnir, forbade him to leave Asgard. His return to Jotunheim would surely lead to his own death when the Jotunns caught sight of him without his powerful weapon at his side.
Thor agrees to remain behind, but this time it's his turn to lie. He leaves the bedchamber and hurries to the armory, hastily putting on whatever will fit at a moment's notice over his night tunic. An ordinary war hammer will have to do in place of Mjolnir, as there is no time to seek out anything better. This is his responsibility, and if he hurries he may yet catch up to Loki in time.
While the other soldiers are still preparing for a journey they will certainly not make for Loki's sake alone (Heimdall cannot open the Bifrost if it will put Asgard in danger, after all), Thor sprints outside and grabs a horse for the ride across the Rainbow Bridge. By the time he makes it to the Observatory Thor is near panicked as he pleads for Heimdall to allow him passage to Jotunheim.
Whatever reasons he may have for agreeing, the Gatekeeper does open the Bifrost, though not without a few brief words of warning and a few more of encouragement. When Thor is next on his feet, he's back on that icy wasteland of a planet, this time alone.
Immediately he feels a chill, under-dressed for the freezing weather and wearing metal armor that only becomes colder in this environment. Hopefully Loki will not be too far... if he keeps a brisk pace he may yet find him before his brother finds Laufey.]

The tingle of ice in the air that barely touched him seemed another dagger to pain him now, another reminder of what he was underneath this illusion of Asgardian flesh. He had not bothered to change from the clothes he had worn all that day and into the night, not thinking nearly clear enough to consider how ill-camouflaged he would be against the stark white snow.
The first Frost Giant he comes across suffers badly for it. Finally he has an outlet to the rage threatening to devour him from the inside out, and the creature meets its end in a whirl of vicious steel. He may not be the warrior that Thor is, but he was far from helpless and he attacks with the ferocity of a man with little to lose.
Consequently, he leaves an easy trail for Thor to follow. One very dead Jotunn, clear footsteps through the deep snow, and a speck of green against the white landscape moving slowly onwards, courting death and destruction without seeming to care.]
LAUFEY!
[Loki's shout is muffled by the deadening cushion of snow, but it still rings out across the otherwise silent landscape. He knows that he must be being watched, he knows that there cannot only be the lone guard he dispatched, the others must be nearby in full force. So why, then, do they not attack? Why do they remain hidden?]
no subject
The echo of that single shouted word reaches his ears soon enough. Thor grits his teeth and forces himself to continue at a brisk pace, each huffing breath visible in the air before him.
He's too late. Loki has reached the throne and he's too late.
Hold on, he prays, hoping that even if an attack comes, Loki will be able to handle himself long enough for him to arrive as backup.]
no subject
Shock registers so clearly on his face that it may have been comical at any other moment. For once the usually loquacious trickster lost for words.
But then that shock melts back into a terrible rage that threatens to sweep him away and consume him completely. How dare Thor come here. How dare he try to steal this victory from him, come to overshadow him as always and take the glory onto his own shoulders.]
What are you doing here?
[His voice is a hiss and he looks near ready to use those daggers even though his foe is no Jotunn.]
I did not ask you to come. Go back!
no subject
Don't be a fool! You will only get yourself killed coming here alone!
[He reaches out to grab his brother's arm, grip strong despite the cold nipping at his fingers. He will drag him back if he must, even if he suffers a the bite of those blades in the process.]
Do you really think you can fight every Frost Giant by yourself? Have you already forgotten last morning's disaster?
[His own words are harsh and urgent, his lack of patience for this reckless behavior clear. Amazing how their positions have flipped so dramatically, and yet the reason now feels perfectly obvious to Thor. This is about protecting his family now, not about personal glory. What glory is there to be had when he's no longer worthy in his father's eyes?]
no subject
You have no idea what I am capable of.
[He doesn't bother to keep his voice down. The events of the day, the betrayal, the emotional upheaval, all of it has left him reckless. In fact, he hopes it does draw the Jotunns out, he hopes they show themselves and allow him to vent his fury upon them.]
You think I am no warrior because I scorn your methods of brute force, you think I cannot prove myself here? I will kill them all. I will wipe these monsters from existence, and you have no part in it. You are not welcome here.
no subject
[Thor makes another grab for his arm, frustrated when he feels as though Loki is unlikely to be persuaded by his words. Force has always been easier for him, and it would certainly be much simpler to carry an unconscious body back to Asgard than drag him there kicking and screaming all the way.]
You cannot kill every Frost Giant on your own. That is madness!
[And then around them, echoing on the wind, Thor hears a deep, dark chuckle. Of course they're being watched- the Giants must be having a great time watching the two princes argue while alone in their territory. Just hearing that angers the thunderer further, even as it adds to the sense of urgency to get going.]
no subject
[He hears the laugh and it sends ripples of both fear and blind desperation through him. He has to do this. He has to. Not just to prove himself to Odin that he is worthy of being a son of Asgard, but for himself. Because he cannot fight the monster inside his own skin.]
I will not be spoken down to and ordered home as though I were a helpless child. I will not be escorted home to listen to everyone sing your praises at single-handedly braving Jotunheim to 'rescue' me. I know why you are here, it is to increase your own glory and take mine from me again.. I know what I am doing, and it is no business of yours. Leave now, Thor.
no subject
[He sighs loudly, angrily huffing at Loki's attempts to frame him as a bad guy when he's only trying to keep him safe. And to assume he might actually leave when asked? No, this time he absolutely will not.
And as a deep low, familiar voice suddenly rumbled around them, interrupting whatever else Thor might have said, he also knows that leaving won't be easy anymore even if he wished to obey the furious command.]
I had not expected you back so soon, Asgardians. Where are your friends this time? [The ground shakes as the King of Jotunheim emerges from the shadows of the icy cliff, about half a dozen armed warriors flanking him.] Both of Odin's sons, alone and bickering. Shall I have you killed, or perhaps take you as my prisoners?
[Thor releases his grip on Loki's arm again when the Jotunns finally show themselves, his fingers curling tightly around the handle of his warhammer. He will fight alongside his brother if he must and do everything he can to bring him back safely.]
no subject
His eyes locked onto the blue skinned monster stood before him, struggling to reconcile the horrifying thing before him with the knowledge that he had come from those beginnings. Did this creature even know who stood before him? Would he have cared if he did?
It was unlikely. Odin had said he had been abandoned to die, a runt. No doubt Laufey had assumed his pitiful offspring had perished that day and rejoiced for it. It drove him wild, it hurt viciously, knowing that on both sides of his life that he could not measure up. He was a failed runt of a giant, and a weak warrior who did not deserve to call himself Odinson.
For a few frozen seconds, Loki forgot how to breathe. An expression of raw hurt stood clear upon his face as he stood, silent and still.]
I am no son of Odin.
[The words were a bare whisper, but with them came the breaking of the dam. He cared not for Thor's presence there any longer, he cared not that he was outnumbered, he cared for nothing except the blind rage filling him so completely that he nearly choked on it.
With a wordless snarl, he threw himself straight at Laufey. His daggers flashed rapidly in his hands and a burst of raw magic exploded out from him without restraint.]
no subject
The burst of energy sends everyone in the nearby radius, including Thor, stumbling back. Laufey meets Loki's attack with a sharp grin, a thick, jagged layer of ice forming over his right arm which he uses to block the daggers from making their way into his skin. The other Giants form similar icy weapons shortly after, and, both to Thor's relief and dismay, nearly all hurry after him while offering their King the opportunity to fight one-on-one with the Asgardian who dared attack him.
Fighting multiple creatures at once, all a few feet taller than himself, is not quite so easy without Mjolnir's help. The warhammer he'd taken from the armory feels clumsy in comparison, while the metal armor allows for far less freedom of movement than his usual protective gear.
Nonetheless, certain fighting techniques remain the same even without his beloved relic's powers. The hammer smashes one Jotunn's jaw from beneath, while another strike shatters the incoming ice-blade before it can cut into his middle. Thor's attention is completely captured by the battle, adrenaline pushing him to keep up despite his current disadvantages.
For awhile it seems like he might succeed. For awhile he hopes Laufey doesn't have the rest of his men around.
And then the ground begins to rumble again, the noise much louder than previously. Many, many more Giants are beginning to crowd around, much to the thunderer's despair. Simply surviving suddenly seems extremely unlikely without even considering how he might extract Loki from danger and return him home.]
no subject
He has no eyes or ears for the fierce battle that his brother is also raging, hampered by the lack of his usual power. His attention is solely on Laufey, all his rage and bitter hurt being channelled into his abilities. He pivots and twists like an eel out of range of counter-attacks, creating copies of himself and dissipating them almost as fast in order to disorient and confuse.
The other Giants begin to converge on Thor more solidly. He has always been the more prominent fighter of Odin's sons, though the absence of his usual relic has been noted and enjoyed. With a unified roar, the wave of warriors breaks upon the fight, dozens of Giants aiming to overwhelm the elder prince without killing him. They had their orders from the moment both Asgardians had been seen. Capture, not kill, for a hostage was worth more than a dead body, especially when that hostage was the crown prince.
Others moved towards where Laufey still battled Loki, both of them bleeding from various superficial wounds, with the intent of assisting if ordered to. No, they did not wish to kill the princes (or, at least, not both of them), but there were many things that could be done short of death.]
no subject
It's only when enormous hands pin him down so completely that he can barely move that Thor is forced to accept that he's lost this battle. He groans as another hand curls in his hand, yanking his head back and giving him a perfect view of the ongoing fight between Loki and Laufey.
All around he hears laughter and jeering, the mass of Jotunns well-aware that their King is only toying with the younger prince now, that he could have them converge on him as well to end the fight at any time.
Eventually, however, the King does speak, even while continuing to block and attack, ice versus steel.] Your brother is done, Asgardian. Yield now else I have his head cut off and sent back to the All-Father in a bag.
[The sorcerer has many tricks, and Laufey has plenty of suspicions that he may have been the one responsible for sneaking his men into Asgard the other day. Such talents would be incredibly useful if he had them on his side, leaving him hopeful that he might manipulate the second prince by threatening the first.]
no subject
He stands facing Laufey, eyes burning with rage, hands trembling, and he teeters over the edge. A part of him grasps for the power and recognition that would come if Thor were gone, and an even more bitter voice whispered in his mind that it would be a fine revenge on Odin to leave him with only the false son as heir. He could be King in truth, he could--
Then take him and be done with it.
The words are on the tip of his tongue, ready to be spat out and send him down a road he would not easily return from. But he cannot say them. He sees Thor in his mind's eye attempting to comfort him in his own way, his words and deeds clumsy, but his heart earnest and true in his dedication. He hears the words of love echo in his mind, and he cannot do it. He cannot betray the brother who stood by him even after he learned the truth.
Rage fades from his eyes and is replaced by an intense hatred and self loathing, every fibre of his being wants to finish this here and now, but he takes a single step backwards.]
If you kill him, Odin will come to your lands and raze them once more. He will not leave you with even the pathetic scrap of home that you hold now only by the grace of his mercy, a mercy which you will be sure to lose the second his heir's blood is on your hands.
[Perhaps he should have tried a more conciliatory and calm approach, but his tongue simply ran where it would, speaking harsh truths for all to hear. Odin had nearly destroyed this entire realm during the war in which he had been taken, the casket of winters was in his possession, surely Laufey knew that he would be doomed to truly tempt the All-Father's wrath.]
He should not be here, it was I who came to find you. Send him away, allow him to return to Asgard, and we will finish what has been started.
no subject
But ultimately he does yield. Satisfied, the King stands down as well, though his guards are ready to strike at Loki should he be foolish enough to attack again despite the warning.]
He will remain here as my prisoner. [Two Jotunns take that as a cue to lift Thor to his feet by his arms, holding him tightly between them. The thunderer wears a snarl as he attempts to stare Laufey down, though the effect is mostly lost beneath badly mussed hair and cheeks red from his face being pressed into the snow.]
His fate will depend on your cooperation. Meanwhile, you and I will discuss precisely why you came to find me at great risk to your own life.
no subject
You make a good damsel, princess.
[Loki glances sidewards to briefly meet Thor's eyes. His own still burning with unbalanced rage, though a flicker of concern does shine through as well. He does not want to see his brother die here (yes... yes, brother still, even despite it all), not truly.
He turns back to Laufey, back straight and words spat out through clenched teeth.]
You will send him back to Asgard, or you will be unable to hear my reasons over the sound of your own death screams.
no subject
Worry over the possibility of crippling injury or death, as well as Loki's life, keeps Thor from reacting much at all to the taunt. No, his pride is no longer an issue as compared to everything else.]
I refuse to leave you here alone!
[Another round of chuckles follows his shout, as though either of them actually believe their King might return such a valuable captive. He's already threatened war with Asgard. Why give them back their best soldier just like that, while losing any leverage over the sorcerer?]
You are just as reckless as your brother. [He turns his gaze towards the Jotunns holding Thor in place.] Restrain him in a cell. Try not to burn him just yet.
no subject
You think to control me using his life? You are a fool if you believe he means anything to me.
[Loki whirls on his heel and focuses his will to cast an illusion, the strongest one he can manage. He creates a bolt of energy, like an attack heading directly for his brother's chest, and then an illusion of Thor bleeding and rapidly dying. He tries and cloaks the sound around his brother's mouth, lest he speak and give away the lie, and attempts to replace it with sounds of moans that quickly still to nothingness.]
You have misplayed your hand, Laufey.
