[She should have never fallen for the dignitary staying with the Duke, but then she habit of doing what she shouldn't. She's a modern women and opinionated at that. Of course what is happening in Russia with the Bolsheviks is terrible, and she truly knows nothing about him save what he tells her. And she has no reason to distrust him. And the Duke has a daughter her age, and she's been invited to stay the summer as well.

The first week goes atrociously. When they do speak, they never seem to agree on anything. He seems to go away a lot though, so as the days tick by and the summer hits it's peak, their relationship isn't so bad. He has an intensity about him, and it's his demeanor that draws her to him. Several times they meet in the library. They talk of literature and the world as he's seen it. Once or twice she gets a comment from the Duke's daughter about her apparent fondness and the propriety of it all. But she's the third daughter of an Earl with her own mind.

It's a cool evening after he's been gone for a week, off to London or some place she's never informed about. But when it's announced that he's returning that evening in a car from the station, she finds herself waiting by one of the windows. There's a book in her hand, and she sees him exiting. For a moment she catches his eye when he's looking about, the servants fetching his bags. She smiles down to him, but she doesn't go down. Instead she retreats into the room.

It isn't until after a late dinner that she gets to slip away with him. Her smile is just as soft. Part of her wants to take his hand, though she doesn't want to be too forward for once.]

Alec hadn't been the type to sneak out at night. He was a homebody of sorts. If he wasn't going out with Izzy or Jace, then he was usually at the Institute, reading the 'boring' books that his sister always teased him about. That had changed a couple weeks ago thanks to a certain warlock and now Alec was learning the art of sneaking out of and into the Institute.

He was moving slower than usual, still limping slightly from tangling with Abbadon, when he noticed a flash of movement ahead of him. Pulling a knife from his boot, he crept forward silently before realizing who it was in the darkened hallway. "Isn't it a little late to be visiting?"

( jane takes a position at the university of london and thor stays with her. it's not quite the life she imagined when younger, but it doesn't have to be — it's better. she's seen things, learned things far beyond her wildest dreams, and to be able to explore that and have a relationship with someone like thor?

it's great.

she likes the job, having access to professional lab equipment that she hasn't cobbled together herself, she loves living with thor even though it's quite a lot and quite soon — theirs had always been a whirlwind romance and to sort out who buys the poptarts when he's emptied the box again is entirely novel. she likes teaching, too, but after one of her undergrad students catches thor distracting her from her lab equipment quite successfully, she becomes a little more careful. she wants their respect because she's a good — scratch that, a great scientist, she doesn't want their jokes about "boning the god of thunder" or the jealous glances of female undergrads.

so she makes thor promise not to visit her at her workplace again, or at least not to be so obvious about it. she'd been quite firm on that, but she can't deny the thrill that goes through her when she catches a glimpse of red flannel and blond hair when looking up from the spectrometer. it's there and gone again, and jane takes the time to jot down her data before leaving the instrument alone and walking out into the corridor. )

[ The door to Hux’s quarters rattles, before sliding open (using the control panel to open a door? Beneath some people, apparently) - and Ren stands with his shoulder braced against the doorframe, the scar on his face cauterised and raw against the rest of his skin. He’s fresh out of the medbay, reeking of bacta, and they’ve been drifting towards the outer rim for a few days now - towards Snoke, and away from the wreckage of Starkiller Base.

He stalks into the room, and does not spare Hux a second glance as he sits down heavily on the side of the bed, removes his boots, and curls onto his side. It’s not unheard of that they share quarters once in a great while - in the timeframe that they’ve been on the Finalizer it was bound to happen, even inadvertently (Kylo’s pattern of slipping out into the hallway at ungodly hours afterwards notwithstanding).

Of course, there’s no love lost between them - it’s a matter of convenience, and of a power dynamic taken to a more even playing field.

He’s muzzy from whatever they’d given him, and he glares across at the general now, squinting at the overhead light. He still manages to sound harsh, painkillers aside: ] Turn the light down, you’re not blind.
