like a fish out of water

the fish out of water shipping meme

The main conceit of shipping memes, it seems, is that both characters exist in the same universe. But what about something that tosses that out the window for a minute, and lets you play with the implications of "crossover?" Here, you can play with someone from a different canon (or AU or radically different canonpoint) and enjoy shipping that's truly out of this world.

It can be hard enough being ejected from your own home - imagine being plucked away from your home world! This could be because of your own doing (say, you were banished for being too cocky), you were too evil or too ambitious to stay, or even due to an accident. Those temporal shifts can be a little much. Whether by design or by chaos, however, you end up in the same place...or, rather, a different place. Theoretically, this world could be very much like your own, with only a few minor changes, like a purple sky instead of a blue one or lion-demons instead of tiger-vampires. On the other hand, it could be completely different, anywhere from more technologically advanced or less so or even filled to the brim with bizarre creatures. They still use cars? What are those infernal beeping devices? Why does no one have feathers or gills? Needless to say, this could be overwhelming if you are possibly powerless and definitely alone.

But you're not alone. Someone, a native of this world, has ended up tangled into this whole affair with you, whether they want it or not. You can't turn that down. They're your only ally, your only anchor in this brand new world. Maybe, just maybe, they can show you a thing or two to help you back up on your feet. Or, best case scenario, back to your home! When you're out of the frying pan and into the fire, though, nothing is cut and dry. Everything about this world may not be so horrible - it may be fun, even - and this person you've ended up with, oh, they could be worse. In fact, you may be beginning to feel at home with them.

Remember. This is not your real home. You want to go back, don't you?

And what about the other party? Of course, you may be less than thrilled that you now are playing tour guide to what seems like a crazy person. Perhaps this was out of the kindness of your heart or you may be forced to play babysitter, but it all leads to you keeping an eye out on them. They have to be lying about all this! Sure, they may talk strange, unconsciously insult you, and act like the simplest things confuse them; that has to be an act!

...still, act or not, you're starting to see that there's more to them than their goofy ways and there's more to your feelings toward them than you thought.

how to play
  • This meme is inspired heavily by the first Thor movie and also a great deal by those romantic comedies where someone from the past goes into the future or vice versa.
  • Comment with your character and preferences. Don't leave your comment blank! Mention something about your character's world in the comment for the canon blind (ie, "ancient Greece" or "dystopia with kids killing kids - the Japanese version"). It doesn't have to be long, it can even be a few words! If you have any other ideas, include them.
  • Reply to others. Use the RNG - or not. Whichever you prefer.

prompts
  1. arrival → You've just arrived...and someone has seen it. What's your impression? Good? Bad? Get the hell away from them? It may depend on why you're here in the first place.
  2. not so different → Huh, this could be your own home in the universe, except for a few subtle changes. But those changes stand out.
  3. different time → The place you've ended up is either much more advanced or much more primitive than you're used to.
  4. different world → They breathe oxygen? Where is their night vision?
  5. magical moment → See the gif. Essentially, it's that moment of interest before everything goes absolutely wrong.
  6. disbelief → So, they says they're an ancient Roman or a magic sky god. Did they hit their head?
  7. argument → No, no, no. You're not going anywhere until we get you some clothes and some help.
  8. forced to take them in → You have no other choice but to take this person in. You were either charged with the task or feel guilty.
  9. offer of shelter → You actually want to take them in out of the kindness of your heart.
  10. depowered → Were you a powerhouse before? Well, now you're an average joe. That'll teach you.
  11. misunderstanding → Here, we don't walk around in loin cloths, draw swords, or barely bathe or eat toothpaste. We also don't ride dogs, either.
  12. friendly fun → Being around here isn't always bad. You get to see new sights, taste new foods, and make new friends. Your milage may vary on the last one.
  13. introduced traditions → Time for the newcomer to show their host something from the old country, so to speak, or the reverse.
  14. romantic moment → Dancing or sitting under the stars or your own preference. Go wild and be creative!
  15. showing you care → They have helped you out a lot since you've arrived. Perhaps you can return the favor by lending a hand or solving a problem?
  16. the romantic shift → The typical turn of events where the two of you begin to see each other in a different light.
  17. not my type → Your usual type is more glamorous or more...possessing of gills, but the bond between you two endears them to you.
  18. jealousy → The newcomer misunderstands the dynamic that's already set in place.
  19. someone back home → You find yourself growing closer to your new friend, but you're already taken back home.
  20. confession → You both admit it's more than mere interdimensional alliances.
  21. smut → You've reached that point in the relationship, or you're about to leave, or you're just curious about the people in this world (remember that scene in Howard the Duck where - nevermind, actually).
  22. epic fight → Two worlds collide and big bads from the past are coming to threaten your temporary home and new love.
  23. reformed → You've learned your lesson and turned over a new leaf. As much as you can, anyway. You're more open, less cocky, whatever the case may be.
  24. sacrifice → Unfortunately, you won't get to go home. You selflessly put yourself in harm's way for your lover.
  25. going home → Time for a heartfelt goodbye. Will you see each other again or is this it?
  26. new home → You've learned and gained so much, you've decided to stay in this word.

Realm travel was nothing new to Sonya, not after Outworld. For months they'd been trying to perfect portal technology, but it was still in early stages and even Sonya had to admit there were..fluxes in their experiments.

That was several days ago when an experiment went completely wrong, and Sonya found herself stranded in a different realm for several days now, and so far unable to find a way back. Her only saving grace was that this looked similar to Earth, albiet a place not nearly as populated: least she could rely on survival skills not to starve.

Along with finding a way home..she needed help. Much as her pride was against it, she needed to try and find a more stable way to hold out here. There were clearly people around, but she knew well enough than to assume: her travels told her that towns were widely separated, so she didn't count on people taking in strangers lightly.

For once though, she didn't try to hide that she was coming into town. If she didn't want people suspecious, she couldn't do it by sneaking inside: as far as they were concerned, she was just a usual traveler. Never mind that her clothing was army issued bdus instead of what was worn around here.

[personal profile] drehnifusbahi 2016-01-03 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
She was right not to assume, especially given current events - a rather bloody civil war ended not long ago, and tension and distrust were slow to fade even between neighbors. Strangers would have it twice as hard by default.

Still, the town would like peaceful enough as she approached, with its gate open and only a single guard on duty there. Inside, people milled about, exchanging friendly greetings as they went about their routines.

Then a large, winged shadow passed overhead, a roar sounded, and the townsfolk immediately scattered, while the guards raised bows and arrows against the dragon and a young man just leaving one of the shops brought a crossbow to bear on it.

Safe to say no one would be paying much attention to a human traveler just then, and Sonya would be well within her rights to just leave.

She may've been well within her rights, but several days exploring, this was the only town for miles. There was no way she was going to risk just leaving now.

That didn't stop her from diving for cover. Dragons weren't exactly myths in her world, but they weren't common enough threats either. She hid behind a few stalls, trying to take gauge of what was happening. At the very least, this placed the sort of tech this world had-which didn't look like much.
drehnifusbahi: (dead serious)

[personal profile] drehnifusbahi 2016-01-04 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Compared to what she's used to, they aren't much - the bows are simple wood, and there's nothing special about the arrows either. The crossbow is slightly unusual, apparently made of metal and apparently faster to reload than the standard. The bolts being fired from it are also unusual, exploding into fireballs where they hit the dragon.

But the dragon keeps moving, circling above the rooftops and breathing frost down on the crossbowman and the hapless guards. When its wounds finally forced it to land, it alights on a rooftop very near Sonya's hiding spot.

Okay, things didn't go quite as planned. It was a nice simple plan, he liked that plan, he even named it. It was Plan A. It will be missed.

Plan B, worked out a little better. He succeeded in getting the carbonite encased person of interest onto a ship. It only got hit a couple times with blaster fire. But alas, Plan B didn't make it.

Plan C, is working out much better. He's alive, the ship is mostly in one piece and he successfully evaded his First Order pursuers. Only one snag and that's the hyperdrive isn't working. He found a nice moon to hide on.

What remains of Plan C will now meet Plan D and with luck they won't need to spawn little baby plans E and F.

"Sorry about this, buddy," he says after he starts the carbon thawing process. "Have I got a story to tell you." At the first signs of life he's ready with a blanket(with a couple blaster holes don't mind those) ready. "Easy now. Your vision will take time to recover."

Sinjir's last memory is of two faces, two identical faces - brothers, they had said, at first, but their movements were too alike, too precise, too smooth, not like the farmers they claimed to be. And Sinjir couldn't scream, couldn't fight; he was frozen in place while one of them murmured, said something about if you survive and someone has to remember...

And then it feels like all of his skin is set on fire at once, a first burst of pain that rivals anything Sinjir has ever felt. Fortunate, perhaps, that he doesn't even have the air to shout, because it makes him seem very stoic, the way he falls down and starts violently shivering in silence.

The burning fades to a feeling like spiny insectoids crawling all over him.

"Oh, this is," he croaks, blinking hard, "really unpleasant."

There. Total stoic badass. Total stoic badass who might pee himself.

"At least you're alive, eh?" He pats him on the shoulder. He passes him a water canteen, taking his hand and putting it on the lid so he can tell what it is.

"I know it's a lot to take in right now but we're not out of it yet. I thawed you out early. The First Order is looking for us and I'm not sure I can get this bird flying again." Oh, right he should explain, "The First Order succeeded The Empire. About 30 years or so have passed."

"Listen, we're parked on a moon. If I can't get this ship working again, I'm going to need you to move."
drunk_ish: (22)

[personal profile] drunk_ish 2016-01-04 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
Sinjir processes the information like slow, trickling sludge. Like mud and ice. He pushes the canteen away and reaches for the owner of the voice instead, snagging a hand out of midair and flattening it between his. Pulls the man closer, and touches his face, his brow.

"Tell me who you are." His hand doesn't move. He's feeling for microexpressions. Signs of deception.

No twitches; the eyebrows don't move, and the corners of the eyes aren't strained.

Sinjir drops the hand touching Poe's face, and squeezes hard with his other hand, still clasped on Poe's wrist.

"I think," he says, slowly, "that I am going to be sick all over everything." These words are forced out through teeth chattering. His whole body is just sweating now, hot and cold and painful-tingly. His muscles are weak as a baby's. "Please explain our situation in more detail."
buddyrogue: (04)

[personal profile] buddyrogue 2016-01-04 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Shoot for your left if you do," Poe suggests while patting his arm. He'd rather not get thrown up on and he doesn't care about the left side of the ship.

"We received word you were in the hands of the First Order. There was very little security where you were being kept. The General sent me in to bring you back. It was going fine until a patrol that wasn't supposed to be there walked in just as I was getting you to my ship. We're not on my ship, by the way, I had to take another. The hit the hyperdrive on my way out of the system. This moon has a few settlements. I put down here in case we needed a new ride as well as a place to hide."
drunk_ish: (29)

[personal profile] drunk_ish 2016-01-04 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
He's listening less to the words than the modulation of Poe's voice. Liars rarely disguise the tone of their voice; they're so focused on face and body language, which is what most people perceive anyway. Sinjir feels the strain of combat in Poe's voice, but not more than that.

"The General," he echoes, swallowing down the nausea. He takes the water now, without hesitation, his hand remembering exactly where it was.

What General?

Leia Organa. Sinjir breathes in, a hint of pain and hope together on his face.

"Are we in a nebula full of bright purple and gently wheeling stars?" asks Sinjir. "Because, if not, the vision comes poorly. Tell me what's wrong with the ship, exactly. And give me a blaster." His bones and tendons feel like they don't quite fit together, a puzzle forced into place, but his self-discipline makes him move to stand.

"We're in a black and grey cargo freighter badly in need of paint job and a hyperdrive."

There's a moment's hesitation about a blaster but he soon presses one into the palm of Sinjir's hand, "Try not to shoot friendly nebula."

"The hyperdrive is below us. If I cannibalize parts from other systems I might be able to fix it but I can't say how long that will take." Sounds of him moving around and opening the access hatch. "Oh, the container behind you has rations. They aren't very good but... jelled condensed protein is better than nothing."
drunk_ish: (58)

[personal profile] drunk_ish 2016-01-15 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"You do the hyperdrive, I'll do the paint job," says Sinjir, so very dry. He reaches behind him, skims his fingertips until he finds the catch, and opens it. "Heat-resistant paint sounds more appetizing than gelled protein anyhow. I meant what is wrong with the hyperdrive."

Not that he's a mechanic, but you have to learn how to build a lot of things when you graduate from the Imperial Academy on Coruscant. You have to know a little about everyone's jobs on a naval ship.

"Where did you learn to repair starships?" Sinjir's voice has a note of warning in it. "When you power it up, do the lights come on in order, out of order, or do they stop halfway?"

And is he thinking about throwing up because the protein is terrible, or because of the whole frozen in carbonite thing?

"No, it's in the processor," he says. "The coordination between units is shot. You might be able to substitute with the one from the communications array, but probably not."

A hiss of air, between his teeth.

"How about stealing Imperial ships? Do you do that on the first date?" Tosses back the last of the protein, with a grimace. "Because, if not, we should get to the second date pretty quickly."

Propping himself out of the access hatch, "Oh, funny you should ask. I've stolen a TIE fighter on the first date."

He closes the hatch, half because he doesn't want Sinjir accidentally falling in when he's not looking and half because stealing a ship might be a good idea after all. "We'd just need to convince them to land and look for us. That part shouldn't be hard. Sneaking on on the other hand..."

"Do you feel up to that?"

"Your dating life is more exciting than mine."

Blaster in his belt, once he's carefully catalogued the controls.

"No idea," he says. "Let's find out." He appears to be able to stand, right now, though the process of getting there involves a little help from the wall. Mutters, to himself: "I'll just pretend it's really dark."

"It could stand to be a little less exciting. Nobody wants to just cuddle," he says then flashes a smile.

Poe watches him, mentally going over what the general told him about carbonite thawing. "Stormtroopers are still white blobs," he offers, "Remember, I'm the friendly nebula that doesn't want to be accidentally shot in the back."

He claps him on the shoulder, "Stay close until your eyes adjust."

While going to open the hatch he says, "If we're lucky, they haven't gotten this far yet--"

And as soon as the hatch opens shots a fired. Just some stormtroopers chilling outside in ambush.

Sinjir ducks behind a crate, which he felt earlier with a brush of his fingertips. Blaster on, safety off, and he counts, listens, and then leans out and shoots three times. One shot hits a stormtrooper in the chest. Another makes a trooper duck down behind a bush.

He ducks back, and listens, carefully, again.
buddyrogue: (Default)

[personal profile] buddyrogue 2016-01-19 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Poe takes cover next to the hatch. It may not be terribly professional but he laughs when Sinjir shoots and hits a trooper. "Nice shot!"

"Let's hope they parked near by!" he calls out before peaking from behind cover and shooting. He takes out few troopers and hopes this is only a scouting party. No matter how good a shot the mostly blind guy is they can't take on an army.

"Told you I needed a blaster," shoots Sinjir, in the vague direction of Poe. "There are five others. That's a squad plus two. There'll be at least two more elsewhere."

He shoots again, this time nailing one with the first shot.

"Also, I practiced blindfolded," he says.

"Of course you did!" because at this point, why not? Sure. It's been a weird day.

With an idea of their numbers, Poe takes a deep breath and steadies his blaster against a metal crate. He takes three quick shots and three more go do.

"Ready to move. Keep close."

Now they just need to find a TIE fighter to steal.

"It's space," returns Sinjir, "and sometimes you fight in the dark."

He's shivering again, violently. Teeth gritted.

"I need a moment. Just..." Just let these spasms pass.
buddyrogue: (08)

[personal profile] buddyrogue 2016-02-03 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Poe does a quick visual sweep before falling back to Sinjir. He puts an arm around him. "Just stay close. I got you." It seems better this way, if he keeps an arm around him after the spasms pass. No risk getting lost and if he needs someone to lean on he's already there.

There's a glint of metal behind some strange purple trees. OH, please be a TIE fighter. Yes, that looks like a fin of one. Now where is its pilot...
