bad dreams are ordeals, sometimes seemingly endless. when you wake up, your heart pounds, your head hurts, and you end up drenched in sweat. even if you know none of it was real, it takes a while to orient yourself. it is pretty nice to have someone there to wake you up or to soothe you out of it and remind you that... it's only a dream. ••• the usual rules apply. post with your character and preferences and then tag around, have your characters comfort others.

[ Hera isn't in the habit of barging into everyone's bunks if she doesn't have to. With as big as her crew is getting, privacy is becoming more and more rare in the tight quarters of the Ghost, and she knows how important it can be, sometimes.

But she also can't ignore when a member of her crew is in distress - especially the youngest. She and Kanan have taken responsibility for Ezra, as much as they have the others, and it's not something she can ignore.

The door of the cabin swooshes open, and Hera glances inside, a concerned expression on her face as she watches the boy, tossing and turning. A nightmare, then. ]

[She's a light sleeper. Maria suspects they all are, especially away on a mission, holed up in something that feels more like a cave than a cheap hotel room in a fractured country, waiting for intel so they can make their next move. But her contact won't show until tomorrow and so she lays there on her back on the floor - because like hell is she going to risk sleeping in what passes for a bed - hands folded over her stomach, dozing in and out and listening to the voices outside in the narrow streets that never seem to sleep and the occasional burst of distant gunfire that's too aimless and sporadic to have a purpose.

When his nightmare starts, she hears it. Because she's been listening to the even sounds of his quiet breathing as he dozes not far away on his own sleeping bag, using it to measure time and white noise her so that she can catch those cat naps of hers. And his breathing changes. Goes slower, and then tighter, and by the time its picking up speed she's turning her head to look at the profile of his face in the outside lights that peek in through the ratty curtains over the window. He doesn't move, doesn't thrash or make any sound beyond the growingly shaking breathing -

but they've all been there. Leftover soldiers in a war that never ends and she knows that sickly cold, stomach churning feeling, the fever behind the eyelids, the choking terror. The helplessness.

She wonders what a soldier who's fought wars over two centuries has nightmares about. How his mind even chooses which bad memory or fear to pull out of its hat and amplify.]

Steve. [It's a whisper, kept low to not startle. She doesn't reach for him. She knows too well that you don't wake a sleeping soldier in a nightmare, especially not one that could collapse a wall with a calculated punch. But - she can't let him dream. Not whatever it is that's got his breathing so strained in his throat. It's not a tactical decision her part, one of the rare times for that. It's just - no one deserves the nightmares they carry in their head. He doesn't. Her booted foot shifts, careful not to bring her body closer, and lightly nudges his ankle.]

Waking
She thought she had gotten past this. That the nightmares would stop. Steph tossed and turned, face screwed up against the faceless monsters.

She didn't get to her team in time. They weren't able to save everyone in time. There would be no homecoming for them. She wasn't fast enough, strong enough. Debris and bodies of friends littered around her. Not just the Avengers, but the Howling Commandos.

Steph whimpered a little and kept moving, trying to escape the nightmare that threatened to overwhelm her.


Waker
When she first heard the sounds of unrest, the blonde woke up, immediately alert to her surroundings. She looked around before patting beside her bed for the switch on her bedside lamp as she tried to pinpoint where the noise was coming from: intruder?

No. That was the sound of someone fitfully sleeping, something she was all too familiar with. She slid out of bed and padded outside of her room to follow the sound.

First! ...like first option, not just declaring "first"! XD

Semper--or "David" as he'd been calling himself for a few years--knew the symptoms pretty well. It was by no means the first time he had seen how those dreams plagued Steph, and far, far from the first time he'd seen someone insist they were "past it."

Hell, he'd been the one making that assertion often enough, back in the day. It came as no surprise to him that the past was never quite as distant as she made it out to be, and as frustrating is the repetition of well-known foibles was, there was something endearingly human about it, as well, and he couldn't help but smile to himself. She was tough, as he knew--anyone who'd made it out the other end of that war, even on the Western front, was tough--and he wasn't really a worrier by nature. At least, not any more. He leaned over and brushed her hair back from her face.

[ Neither of them were especially keen to leave their respective mountains of field reports and missives of varying urgency hitherto unscaled peaks for very long. Burning the candle from both ends defined the late hours of most nights for them even though they rarely worked together let alone outside their respective offices turned paper lined hovels. Tonight was a slight change in Lavellan's usual routine.

When a dispatch from Captain Rylen showed up amidst her stack of missives from this lord and that arling it was already too late to send for a runner. The sky outside her open stained glass windows were an inky black cresting over dim grey slivers of the dormant Frostbacks. There would be a skeleton crew patrolling the ramparts but beyond that there was no one else to make a run to Cullen's office beside herself. He would be awake, surely. Lavellan reasoned as she lit a little taper in its notched holder to lit her way down the darkened landing leading out of her chambers.

She knocked once on the door on the ramparts that led into his office before entering. Reasoning if he were asleep when she entered then he would be in his loft above and she could just leave the letter on his desk, and if not then that could only mean he was as busy as she was. The third alternative never occurred to her and when the situation presented itself she wished it had. ]

[ The word died on her tongue when she walked in to find Cullen bent over his desk, head tucked in his folded arms with the fur of his pauldrons making him look like some hibernating beast. A restless one. Lavellan watched almost transfixed as on her friend and commander shuddered and convulsed, muttering painful noises that were almost words in his sleep. It was an unconscious move on her part to walk over to one side of his desk. Only stopping herself when her hand came to hover over his shoulder.

It was an old wive's tale that waking a man in the throes of his night terrors would invite the ire of the Fade. Lavellan never paid much mind to superstition. With the Breach yawning menacingly across the sky and whatever it was tormenting Cullen's rest she supposed one rude awakening wouldn't be the worst thing to happen to him. Candle set aside on the windowsill and away from any alarmed fits that could knock it over onto something flammable, Lavellan moved back on Cullen and attempted to rouse him. Hands on either shoulder, gently shaking him. ]
