S T R A Y Taking in strays is, all in all, an understandable vice. The dips in between their ribs, those large and forlorn eyes, they can help you forget the claws and the teeth and the danger lurking beneath fur. But the habit's a knife edge; your efforts may not be rewarded with kindness (animal instincts aren't discretionary) and you may get bit despite what you've overlooked. A stray doesn't care about pity. All it can know is survival. These warnings apply to strays of the more human(oid) sort, too. But what may even more perilous with this type than any drawn blood is what you can get when they grow to trust you. You can earn their undying loyalty...or their love. Either from such a wild thing is a precarious path to go down, if you allow yourself to do it. There were always hunts throughout the years, sometimes to let the new turns get used to it, other times just to run off the restlessness that was more or less inherent to their species and Bran enjoyed them to a degree.

But there were also other times when he headed out alone and this was one of those times, although he wasn't quite sure what it was that drew him toward the mountains. At least not until he caught the scent of a human.

Not that it was odd to catch that around these parts, what with hunters and the rangers, but there was something a little off about the scent of this one so he followed it, staying downwind as he tracked her path.

Watson tips the boy a shilling and retrieves the paper. The date confirms. 24th April 1894. It's enough to distract him from the gruesome headline of the death of Lord Adair shot in his quarters. Three whole years since one of the worst days of his life. A day more horrible than any of the hellish environments of Afghanistan.

Holmes...Sherlock. This was the sort of case that he would have revelled in. The kind that would have had him leaping from his chair at their old rooms at Baker Street.

Watson clears his throat and nods, turning to return home. Then he decides to go the other direction. Perhaps it would be a good idea to check in on dear Mrs. Hudson...and maybe, if he can bring himself to, take a gander at the flat again.
