the asylum meme

"People ask, How did you get in there? What they really want to know is if they are likely to end up in there as well. I can't answer the real question. All I can tell them is, It's easy."
Well, you've really done it now. You're in a mental institution. Maybe it's a modern facility with a therapy garden, compassionate staff members, and a warm environment meant to help nurse people back to health, or maybe it's a glorified dungeon where the government shoves people they don't want to deal with and patients are abused by staff. Regardless of what it is, you're there, and it doesn't look like they're planning on letting you out any time soon.
Maybe you're actually not supposed to be there and you're trying to arrange for your release. Maybe you actually are meant to be there and you're struggling with your illness. Maybe you're not a patient at all and you're just there to visit or earn your paycheck. It's up to you.
Rules:
1. Post with your character's name, canon, and your preferences on the subject bar, and set up the situation.
2. Tag other people. Are you a visitor? A staff member? A fellow patient? A hallucination? It's your choice.
3. Have fun!

[Why is she here? It could be because she's been failing spectacularly to cope with Bruce's death, to the point where she created an elaborate conspiracy where he's alive but trapped in time. That certainly seems like a good reason for therapy. But then, it might be because she's created an even more elaborate fantasy world where she and her family fight crime and save the world on a regular basis. So hard to tell.
Right now, she's just sitting in one of the common areas, apparently thumbing through a worn copy of a book. Apparently, because she's really more considering whether or not it would be worth it to just escape from this whole stupid situation.]

[Alicia Draper has been suffering episodes of severe depression and self-injury, as evidenced by her impressive array of scars. Luckily, she has caring family who have sent her here to recover under the care of the expert doctors on staff. And if she happens to also be covertly gathering information for an investigation, then who'd notice? Hopefully no one, since that's what this entire mission hinges around.]
IDEK where this came from, besides that I'm evil?
When he talks about them in group, they feel even more real than the routine of the hospital, but that is part of why he's still here. There isn't a real place for him, but someone thought his state lends him to be a danger to himself or others. But that doesn't stop him from trying to put things together in a way that makes sense.
It's the new girl that catches his eye, with a familiarity that he can't put his finger on. He feels like he should know her, but Alicia Draper is a total stranger to him. He just wish that weren't so true.
ugh sorry for the ridic wait, my head has been all over the place lately. feel free to ignore.

[Really, it was only a matter of time. After all, you can't go tell everyone that the human child who has fallen into the underground is an evil, soulless killer who must be stopped for too long before it gets the wrong kind of attention.
The night terror that led to him practically destroying his room and set him off to try and kill them -- and almost succeeding -- had been the tipping point. He didn't bother trying to fight being put here. He hadn't bothered trying to fight anything in a long time.
He's allowed out and about now, but he spends most of the time on a couch in the common area, just... laying there. It's hard to tell if he's even awake.]
Robin | Young Justice | OTA
His was a story that probably couldn't have ended any other way. His parents were brutally killed in a horrible performance accident. He'd been adopted by a man with far more wealth than time for his troubled new charge. It was only natural that the boy would find solace in fantasy. He'd invented an alternate reality, a "bat man" who fought for justice and defeated evil men who would create more orphans. As the fiction grew, so did the boy's immersion in it. He believed himself to be the bat man's sidekick, a child companion who dodged death every night.
Clearly, he'd been driven mad with grief and became horribly disconnected from reality. The poor boy had become a danger to himself and others. He needed to be locked up for the greater good, at least until he could be properly treated.
[OOC: Opener recycled from a previous asylum meme. It could branch out into different directions:
. Maybe Dick is suffering from legitimate mental illness. Can your character help him touch base with the real world?
. Perhaps Batman's secret has been exposed and both Bruce and Dick were dropped into Arkham with the rest of the costumed lunatics. It'll probably make mealtimes with the other inmates terribly awkward...
. Or maybe it's all a lie. Maybe someone's captured superheroes and pumped them with enough sedatives to keep them on the brink of confusion. Can a healthy person be conditioned to believe his reality isn't as real as he thinks it is? And once the doubt is placed, what kind of "real life" will replace it?]

PatientPrisonerWell, he'd done it now, hadn't he?
His eyes rove across the blank white walls, fingertips twitching against the rough weave of his bright orange coveralls. Arkham Asylum. The logo's printed on what would be the pocket, were it an actual suit.
This is the third cell in as many weeks. Third wing, as well. They'll soon be running out of places to put him, and he has to escape eventually. Maybe, just maybe, if he can find the place in the wall that contains the wiring box to the bulletproof glass door that sequesters him from the rest of the world...
In the meantime, however, he can hear the footsteps approaching. A guard? A doctor? Or another poor prisoner unlucky enough to get thrown into this living hell? Only time will tell, he thinks, as he stands up all the straighter. Arms behind his back, the picture of parade rest, a cocky smirk on his lips as he waits for the person to turn the corner.
(( His canon point for this would be shortly after the Zero Year incident ))
Barry Allen ϟ 63!Flash ϟ OTA
[Fun fact: Barry's been in outpatient therapy, on and off, for over a decade now. It's not hard to see why, given how much time she spent trying to convince everyone that she saw something unnatural kill her mother. If she didn't know what she saw that night, that her dad didn't kill her mom... To everyone else, she really did look like a girl whose brain cooked up some crazy memory to protect her from the truth.
So why is she here? The memories are kind of fuzzy still, but apparently, she was called in to examine a domestic violence crime scene and had what appeared to be a full-fledged PTSD flashback followed by several hours of of catatonia. Barry kind of suspects some kind of metahuman influence, but what can she say? It wasn't really me, someone with superpowers made me do it? So she's stuck here for at least a few days while they do a psych evaluation. It is taking pretty much all of her focus to not just use her superspeed to sneak out.]
Re: Barry Allen ϟ 63!Flash ϟ OTA
It was almost down right depressing, how easy it was to convince the staff doctor that Roy actually needed therapy. However the kid really did have his share of emotional damage, and after everything he had seen and done the doctor knew that Roy honestly did have PTSD. Getting in had been simple enough, using a false id to cover his tracks, but now the pajama and bathrobe clad kid found himself wandering the halls...looking for his friend amid a hospital full of mentally unhinged patients.

An odd rumbling mix of Cambridge and American accents spoke softly nearby, "Charles? I am Doctor Egan Adler."
Didn't bother to say the slightly different pronunciation of his actual name, Aodhagán. Not in a white coat like most of the other doctors in the facility, Aodhagán still wore a tie under his vee necked sweater and jacket. A twinkle in his eyes, he was genuinely glad to see his newest patient. Held a tablet and a stylus, but it seemed to be unimportant. Bending, he took a nearby seat.
"Care to tell me why you're here?"
Oh he knew, it was all right there in the database that the tablet linked to, but that wasn't the question that was being asked. Aodhagán wanted to know why Charles thought he was in the facility - a different question entirely.

Sam is sitting in the rec area of the ward, doing his best to ignore the hallucination of the actual Devil sitting next to him, making cat calls and rude remarks. He rolls his eyes and goes back to the book he's been trying to read. Not that it's going very well, he's read the same paragraph six times.
Lucifer pouts at him, "Saaaam, pay attention to me! I'm bored."
He lets out a frustrated groan and slams the book shut, tossing it on the table in front of him. "Can't you shut up and entertain yourself for five minutes?" he grumbles quietly, not actually noticing the lithe little blonde sitting in the general direction he was looking as he speaks.

Coming back to find Isaac locked up in Eichen house?
Chris is not a happy camper, not at all and he's already using what resources he has to sort out the legal requirements of getting the boy placed under his guardianship. It's a more complicated process than he expected, but his reputation and name help a bit.
And when he has time, he checks in on Isaac. It's a distraction he probably doesn't need given the situation with Kate, but the asylum has rules about visitation and most of the kids can't get in as easily as he can.

She was sitting in the common room with a book. Some days she felt social and would happily talk with the other people there, patients and staff alike. But some days, like today, she sat in a corner, her legs folded under her as she felt the need to retreat into herself as much as possible. It was one of the days when her grief was strong enough to show through her shattered mind. These were the days when she posed a danger to herself because reality set in.
Looking up from her book, she glanced around to see who all was around. Perhaps if the staff were busy, she could sneak back to her room.

Rhona Thieu | IMAA AU | OTA
[Rhona was a mess ever since her parents died. She dodged Social Services for as long as she could, tried to keep on like nothing had happened, but in the end she just sort of stopped one day. Stopped trying, to go to class or duck the system or deal with the world at large. It took them four days to find her, shivering after a suicide attempt involving freezing to death and an overdose, a double coverage that still failed.
She talks to her dead brother like he's there. She refuses to talk to almost any of the staff. Sometimes she eats, sometimes she doesn't. They had to tube feed her once, but she barely noticed. She manages to sleep more than anything else. The rest of the world doesn't hold anything of value to her. In her dreams, though, things feel real, and so even though she could be going to group sessions and the like, she just lays there instead.
She was a robotics genius, someone who could have been game changer. Tony Stark himself offered her a position when she graduated. But that was another life.]
harry starks | the long firm
He was transferred from a maximum security prison for his diagnosed manic depression ( modern: bipolar disorder ) after a few significant incidences that made even his beloved mother question the reality of the situation. Harry Starks has a history including racketeering, grievous bodily harm, and fraud. A gangster, in other words, though he'd certainly not be happy with that sort of verbal categorization.
He has a lot of information regarding London underground crime, and even a bit of overseas trade, though he's yet to make any actual statements regarding them - no doubt a factor in the ( considerable ) length of his sentence.
Most days you can find Harry smoking, commandeering the television broadcast, studying a book, or all of the above.
