You're having my baby

the "WE'RE HAVING A BABY" meme

Nature is no respecter of persons, my friends. Whether it be childhood friends, newlyweds, or one-night stands, a single decision or accident can change everything, and there will be three people instead of just two.

Congratulations! The characters in these threads and those who reply to them are now expecting babies, no matter what their unique situation may be. Of course, depending on the characters, this might go over like a lead balloon. But wait! Even if the decision to have a baby was made and was consensual, the process is no walk in the park. There is lots to do...and only nine months to do it. Nine potentially drama-filled months.

HOW TO PLAY
  • Comment with your character, preferences, etc.
  • Not all options here are fluffy and happy. Some are potentially angsty or possibly triggering. Tread lightly. Be sure to mention what you want and what you don't want.
  • Reply to others.
  • For this, male characters can get pregnant because why not.

PROMPTS

  • How'd It Happen: What led up to this event? How are you in this situation?

  • Realization: There's a wrench in the works...or maybe it was expected, but you're just realizing you're pregnant.

  • Positive Reaction: Yes, after all this time and planning! You're finally ready for a family.

  • Negative Reaction: Oh, no. This is terrible. You're in no position to take care of a child!

  • Freak Outs: But...how? You're a human, she's an alien, how -

  • Deciding What to Do: If this wasn't planned, there needs to be a plan of action now.

  • Keep it Secret: You're attempting to keep your pregnancy a secret from your partner. This is only a bandaid for the bigger problem.

  • Telling Others: The other people in you two's life have to know at some point.

  • Drama: No one wanted you to have a kid and the anger is palpable.

  • Morning Sickness and More: Everything hurts and the mornings are hell.

  • Learning: If you're in a technologically advanced society, you may get to see an ultrasound. Otherwise, there are folk remedies that can be tried.

  • Manipulation: One of you is using the prospect of a child to bend the other to their will and make them stay.

  • My Body is a Cage: The person carrying the baby is having a decent amount of discomfort, mentally and physically.

  • Showing: It's a secret no longer with an expanding stomach.

  • Support: The partner who isn't carrying the child should do their best to be there and help out...

  • Overprotective: ...but to a degree. Don't act like the partner carrying the child is made of paper.

  • Getting Ready: The house or apartment or castle has to be babyproof.

  • Heart to Heart: It's time to talk about the big changes before the happen. Where do the two of you stand?

  • It's Happening: THE BABY IS COMING.

  • Rough Going: Childbirth is still a dangerous affair and there's no smooth sailing for you. So pace if you're lucky, scream in the bed if you're not.

  • Bad End: Not all new beginnings last. Sometimes, they become unhappy endings.

  • Coming Home: Finally, parents and baby get to settle down.

  • Getting Used to This: Well, maybe settle down. There's still crying in the night, feedings to do, diapers to change...

"Come around on it? You don't think he'll want to be the godfather?" It was a lot of potential responsibility, sure, but Clark would never choose someone who was not capable of following through. "Don't worry about it. You're very persuasive when you want to be."

He shook his head firmly.

"Oh no, he definitely wants to do it. Or he will." That he was sure of. "It's more the issue of... which... identity is going to be godfather how."

That was easy.

"Whatever his real identity is. You can't put down Batman." Which was the extent of her knowledge about this cryptic fellow. He liked to dress up like a rubber bat and chase after criminals.

"And the problem there is figuring out why Clark Kent would name... him as a godfather," he pointed out with a little shrug. "He's... not exactly the kind of person most people would assume I'm close to."

And this was another reason Darcy loved having him around: he always spotted problems that she completely overlooked. "Good point." Assuming the dude was taciturn or unfriendly or, like, a total hippie living in a cave somewhere. Regardless, there was an issue, and Clark would figure it out.

Her suggestions would be worthless since she didn't know the guy.

"It'll work out. Besides, a godfather doesn't have to be named at the birth, does he?" She hadn't been religious since she was a small child so she wasn't sure how it worked.

"No," he agreed, "so we could just... have him as godfather. I really can't imagine anyone else, though."

Certainly not Jimmy.

As practical as it was, on the surface, if Darcy dug down a bit deeper, it was just as morbid. Practical in that of course Clark would consider the possibility of both of them dying too soon, because he was a planner, but Darcy despised thinking about her mortality. She was too young to worry about such things, even if she spent her time in dangerous circles. They chased her no matter how far she ran.

"Then I'm all for it. As long as he isn't a bad influence. The kid already has one of those."

Clark shook his head firmly on that one.

"No. He's the best man I've ever known," and Clark said that without an ounce of sarcasm in him. His faith in Bruce was... well, absolute. Even if they quarreled or disagreed, he knew down to his bones that Bruce would protect his child if he couldn't.

Darcy was silent for a while, taking in what he said and, more importantly, how he said it. Finally, she murmured, "I really need to meet this guy."

He agreed with a silent nod before pressing a kiss into her hair.

"You do."

He couldn't help the faint grin a moment after, though.

"I'm not sure how well that meeting's going to go, but you should meet him."

Color her extra curious now. "Why don't you know how it will go?" she asked suspiciously, prodding him in the ribs. Was his friend that weird? Darcy was used to weird.

Despite the fact that he was still cooking, Darcy wrapped her arms around him and rested her head against his chest, eyes drifting closed.

"Because I haven't told him about the baby yet,' he admitted quietly, "not that he doesn't know. But... I haven't made the announcement."

He glanced over at Darcy with a faint, but crooked, grin.

"I think he'll like you. I think he'll act like he doesn't, but that's just his way."

That comment should have alarmed her, or at least made her a little bit nervous, but nope. Darcy's life was oddball enough that she didn't even blink when told that someone she had never met would be aware of her pregnancy without either her or Clark telling him. It was just the world she was living in now, complete with aliens and mind control.

"The question is should I troll him, or just be polite?" Then, "Announcement? Do you plan on making this a big public thing?" Darcy did not especially enjoy being the center of attention for very long, but if it meant tons of baby gifts, then she was all for it.

Maybe.

"The only announcement I'd like to do would be at home. Let my mother hear about it, get some introductions done..." he smiled a little as he thought of it, "maybe get some of the neighbors to bring baby supplies around so we don't have to worry about buying too much more."

He couldn't help himself from leaning over and kissing her cheek.

"And when it comes to B, your answer is always 'troll'. Don't worry. It's practically his native language."

Darcy smiled at him, her thoughts a bazillion miles away. She had no idea what it would be like having a supportive mother figure around, and was truly looking forward to finding out. Her friends considered don't drop the baby to be the height of good advice. An actual mother would have useful things to propose.

"We should do that soon. I have no idea how I'll even be walking a few months from now."

"I'll give her a call and we can head down there next weekend," he offered before leaning over to kiss her temple.
