| Everyone has hopes and aspirations for the future, in some shape, fashion, or form. The dedicated may call them dreams or goals; the extremely dedicated will call it "certainty." Even if you have no thoughts at all or at the very least no thoughts about anything aside from the here and now, you at least have some idea of where you won't be days, months, or years from now. For some, there's even a plan about who they'll be with romantically. That's not too strange, right? Sometimes, you just know, whether it's a childhood friend, a longtime significant other, a crush... ...or no one at all because you're a hard, blackened shell incapable of love. Of course, as with all paths in life, like friendships and true callings, relationships aren't always cut and dry. That person you were so sure you'd end up with? Well, it didn't work out. Perhaps they found someone else, you two just broke up, they didn't like you in that way, what have you. But you aren't alone - in fact, the person you actually have now is like you'd never imagined. Whether you just met them or they've always been, against all odds you two are an item. They could be completely different from you and against your type, making it all the stranger you are where you are. They could be a fellow reject like you who found solace in a second choice. Don't worry, despite the baggage surrounding the concept, second choices can be the better one all along! And as for you blackened, hard shell? It's not hard for a love to be unexpected for you, since you never expected to feel at all. Whatever you case may be, how do you feel about it? Are you still reeling from shift? Secure with this new path? Jealous of old feelings?

[Never in a thousand years would middle school Kise think this would happen. He didn't know Nijimura well in back then. And he didn't think about him much in high school beyond the occasional 'I hope his dad is doing okay' and 'I wonder what happened him.' Mostly he spent his time chasing after Aomine and Kuroko, and then Kasamatsu-senpai for awhile in high school. Nothing had really came of any those pursuits. Now here he was. On a date with Nijimura. Something he never expected to ever happen. He was a little nervous, to be honest, to be on an actual date.]
What do you think of the cafe? It's one of my favorites.
[But he was going to do his best not show that he was.]

It's been a long time since I've been to a cafe like this.
[ He was almost a little embarassed to say it was nice. He hadn't been in Japan for a few years since he'd moved to America for his father's treatment. He'd made a lot of friends over there, but being in Japan again was also nice in a lot of ways. It was where he grew up and where most of his family was. Even Tatsu was there so he could say one of the best friends he made in America had even moved back to his homeland...
What he hadn't expected among all that was to run into Kise again. He hadn't talked to him too much in middle school. They'd been team mates for a short while before he quit, but even then by the time Kise had moved up to first string he wasn't in as many games as he'd used to be. Stress and worry had taken over his priorities and once he fave Akashi his title it was easier to step down.
But this was nice. Surprisingly so. ]

They don't really have cafes like this in the US, do they? What part were part were you living in again Nijimuracchi?
[The waitress came by and he ordered his drink, a vanilla latte, and turned his attention back to Nijimura]
I bet it is nice to be back. You were gone a long time.
Sorry for the late! Crazy week.
[ Nijimura rubs the back of his neck a bit before smiling a little. He wasn't at all against the benefits of being back in Japan, but he did miss some things about America now.
But... home was home, right? ]
There are a lot of little things I forgot about. Like how easy it is to get lost on some streets here in Tokyo... but in LA everything sort of worked its way out. It's quieter here, too.
[ But that wasn't a bad thing either. ]
It is nice, though. How have you been? Still playing basketball?
[ Because he had already run into ads and posters that proved Kise's modeling career was still going on, at the very least. It was actually a little embarrassing to feel the eyes of girls on him as they sat together. He could feel more than a couple envious gazes. ]
It's okay, life happens
[For his part, Kise had grown so used to being stared at that the looks they were getting at their table had gone unnoticed. He just went about his business like usual.]
I've been good. And I'm still playing. I got a nice sports scholarship, so I'm taking advantage of that. I'm still modeling, and there's a chance for me to do a bit part on a drama. My manager wants me to try to go into acting, so that's why. I don't know, it might be fun, but...
[He shrugs] I have a lot of options, and it's only my first year at University. It's a lot harder than high school, so I don't think I'll try adding more to my plate until I'm comfortable.
