When something like this happens, it happens quick. It was true with riots, wars, protests, resistances…anything socially violent. One minute it’s conspiracy theories, weird missing posters and get well messages on Facebook, and viral videos on Youtube and the next, people are dying in the streets.

Tony had been following the news loosely. He liked to be informed, but he also liked to get in games of Call of Duty and he had a garage to run. He followed the first civilian shootings in midtown Manhattan for two days before losing interest. People had been stopped in gridlock, violence escalated and the police evidently shot a few unarmed people. Shit happened. A few days later and there were riots along Fifth Avenue. He’d been on his way home, just getting off of the subway, when the police in riot gear started to corral people back towards Times Square. He high-tailed it back to his apartment on the fifteenth floor of a pretty nice building to pour over news reports.

CNN and MSBNC probably had the highest viewership of their tenures that night.

The next morning, freshly showered and about to head to work, Tony happened to glance out of his apartment window. There was smoke, a lot of smoke, coming from the area of the hospital. His window didn’t let him get the best view and with the television and radio out, he didn’t hesitate to head down the hall toward a guy he vaguely knew from chatting to in the elevator every once in awhile that happened to live in a unit facing the direction he wanted to look.

“Hey,” he said, having to look up at the muscular blond. “This is gonna sound weird but can I look out your window? There’s a ton of smoke coming from the hospital.”

He, unlike Tony, followed the news. No one said anything specific but there were enough hints and tidbits to make him wary. There was something going on that wasn't quite right. He could see it in the faces of the newscasters as they reported on the police shootings in the next couple days. Someone, somewhere, was lying to everyone. Steve wasn't usually the conspiracy theory type but none of this sat right with him and no one seemed to know any better than him. It only got worse as the days went by and he cautiously overbought at the grocery store.

Steve saw the fire. It was impossible to miss. He checked his phone immediately. Steve volunteered for the fire department. He expected something that big to require all hands on deck. When he found no dial tone on the other end, nothing but an "all towers are currently busy" message. Steve turned to the TV instead to see if they knew what caused the blaze.

He was staring at his fuzzy TV with a frown when there was a knock at the door. Cautiously, he peered through the peep hole and when he recognized the man on the other side, he opened the door. He was still frowning when he stepped back to let him in. "Does your phone work?"
