[ how the hell have any of them made it through this place alive tonight, huh? the mines are almost unbearably terrifying, except sam's putting that down to knowing what she could find here. make it any other day, take out the supernatural mass murdering, she'd probably love the adventure of it. the remoteness and intrigue. right now, every shadow hides something, every turn feels like life or death, and she's seriously praying to keep the meter running at life.

so when she hears something up ahead, it takes exactly 0.4 seconds for her to duck behind some decrepit looking wooden slats, her heart suddenly jammed in her throat as she feels that stupid meter tick downwards. except the something isn't her worst fear, it doesn't come with that awful screaming sound that those things makes, it comes with a sniff and the heavy breath of someone who's also been through way too much tonight. that, and sam's pretty sure wendigos don't use lanterns. peering between the slats, squinting in the dark, she can barely believe who she sees. she's already leaping out of her hiding spot when she starts to speak, a burbling stage whisper that starts off a little too loud for her liking, but simmers down as she rushes to the other girl. ]

Jess! Oh my god, Jess, it's really you — are, are you okay?

[ jesus h. christ, sam, did you actually just ask that? she's genuinely appalled with herself. for starters, lunging out from some dark corner of a cave isn't going to be doing jess' invariably frayed nerves any favours, and she's — oh god, covered in such awful wounds. but she's alive. ]

conversely, she's not really an optimist either, but she's pragmatic. thinking about the billion ways in which you could die tonight is pretty much the easiest route your mind could take, followed by thinking about the billions of ways in which your friends could die, but it's also the line of thinking that'll do her no good. she'll do a mental robert frost, take the road less travelled, the one that's really narrow and difficult because how can you stay level at a time like this?

hah. frost. oh, she's so funny, even when she doesn't mean to be.

it's not like anyone's been dressed for the occasion so far tonight, but jesus does she miss her hat. a bit of faux fur would be so amazing right now; the head torch? not so much, as much as they need the light, wandering through mines and caves and basements and fuck only knows what else, in the middle of the night. and don't get her started on the fact that she's soaked from the waist down. calf-length running pants weren't much to start with, even without the sodden, frozen weight. she doesn't want to complain — is this really the worst they've been through so far? — but as another sharp wind slips past them and her teeth chatter until she just groans. ]

Ugh. Apparently trying to pretend you don't have any extremities to freeze off doesn't help when you can't feel them anyway. Who'd have thought?

[ not that jess is waiting for sam. she's glad sam could make it, and she doesn't mind waiting around for her, but it's kind of an excuse. jess wants to see mike, and she knows chris is waiting around for ashley, but they're both going to play this off as waiting for sam. the comparison should bring her guard down, at least a little, but jess isn't in the mood to be teased tonight. jess pulls her legs in, curling her arms in around her knees as she studies chris' profile. ]

We're going to freeze to death. [ she presses on, overdramatic, before her tone brightens. ] We could hide up the trail and jump out at her. That's something better to do than wait around to turn into icicles.

[Detective Sergeant Gardiner had gotten lost in the fracas of the gunfight, her team having advanced on the killers after she'd been pistol whipped by one of them. Lying on the ground as they passed through, attempting to play dead, the ringing in her ears ever present and the throbbing of her temple pulsing in her head, she began to shiver, thinking herself collateral damage. Who had seen her? Was anyone left? The brutal cold of the night was biting at her heels, and she felt herself starting to succumb. Weakly, she called out, her normally clipped, English alto now a slurred drawl:]

(Getting separated from the others was not ideal. Getting lost out in the Scorch was not ideal. Then again, there was a whole lot about their lives that wasn't ideal so Newt didn't know why he was even surprised anymore.

What was more was the part where when someone thought Scorch they thought heat. Yeah, well, no one seemed to take in account the fact that most desert environments got really cold at night. Especially if you hit it at just the right time in the right place. Then you had the perfect brew of chill.

The only good thing in this all was that he wasn't alone. Minho was right there next to him when they went hauling ass. Thomas had tried to keep them together. God knows he did. They'd figure it out tomorrow. Right now, it was pitch black outside and it wasn't worth straying from the temporary shelter they had found inside of a rotten, over turned school bus. They were huddled together in the very back and propped up against the upside down seats. The sand had piled up high enough that it was actually pretty decent shelter. Their bags were at their feet and Newt was trying to sleep.

They both were. The wind was howling strong and the bus was riddled with holes so there would be random spikes of cold bursting in. Newt was trying not to shiver. The jacket helped some and he didn't want to make a big deal. But he was freezing. He bit his tongue as his body did another full shiver and he rubbed his hands at his chest, curling into himself a bit and pressing back against the seat. The most warmth he was getting was from Minho's side. A line of solid heat and it was difficult to not lean into that too much.)
