NOT WHO I EXPECTED TO END UP WITH
![]() ![]() + a potential "pair the spares" meme |
| Everyone has hopes and aspirations for the future, in some shape, fashion, or form. The dedicated may call them dreams or goals; the extremely dedicated will call it "certainty." Even if you have no thoughts at all or at the very least no thoughts about anything aside from the here and now, you at least have some idea of where you won't be days, months, or years from now. For some, there's even a plan about who they'll be with romantically. That's not too strange, right? Sometimes, you just know, whether it's a childhood friend, a longtime significant other, a crush... ...or no one at all because you're a hard, blackened shell incapable of love. Of course, as with all paths in life, like friendships and true callings, relationships aren't always cut and dry. That person you were so sure you'd end up with? Well, it didn't work out. Perhaps they found someone else, you two just broke up, they didn't like you in that way, what have you. But you aren't alone - in fact, the person you actually have now is like you'd never imagined. Whether you just met them or they've always been, against all odds you two are an item. They could be completely different from you and against your type, making it all the stranger you are where you are. They could be a fellow reject like you who found solace in a second choice. Don't worry, despite the baggage surrounding the concept, second choices can be the better one all along! And as for you blackened, hard shell? It's not hard for a love to be unexpected for you, since you never expected to feel at all. Whatever you case may be, how do you feel about it? Are you still reeling from shift? Secure with this new path? Jealous of old feelings?

Looking at each side by side, the Kou Empire and the Kingdom of Seyruun were all together quite different in many respects. Therefore, it was likely no surprise that when it came to some advisers and council on both sides pushing for some matchmaking to be done between the ruling families that the couple that came to be were too opposites in many ways. In fact some probably questioned how an arrangement would even be able to work in the first place. As they were not arranging a marriage between the main heirs but rather the younger sibling of the next in line there were less arguments over power and more about strengthening their bonds as newly formed allies, all together less messy.
What perhaps people were not sure about was how the two royals in question would take to their betrothed. Amelia could not of course speak for Koumei's relatives but she knew her father's council were a bit concerned that her rambunctious ways would cause problems. After all, despite the fact that she was diligent in her duties due to her sisters absence from the capital, even dealing with the boring as sin paperwork without complaint, they didn't regard her somewhat overzealous and eager personality as fitting for a royal blushing bride. Clearly they were hoping she would omit stories about going out travelling with a bunch of bounty hunters and slaying the forces of evil. Not to mention demonstrating how well a childhood spent punching boulders had paid off for her in terms of physical strength. After all, they had heard the Second Imperial Prince was the quiet sort, he would never take to a fiancee who was so...lively.
And yet, some months into the engagement, everything was going smoothly, and not at all because Amelia had sat still and kept her mouth shut during every single visit to the Kou Empire. She was horrible at lying, so saw the effort of trying to pretend to be someone she wasn't as pointless anyway, though of course remaining polite towards her betrothed regardless. However, that strategy seemed to have paid off, since there had been no desperate pleas from either side to end the agreement. The Seyruun princess could only account for her own sentiments, but despite his quietness and sometimes gloomy aura, she had grown to appreciate his earnest and conscientious work ethic, admire his willingness to do whatever it took for the sake of the people in his Empire, all with soft spoken dignity.
Miraculously he had apparently seen something more in her too, as upon her hasty appearance as she slipped into his study (a planned visit, but she had arrived ahead of schedule, hence why no one had known to summon Koumei) she didn't feel at all awkward or pushy in approaching his desk, leaning over and sweeping his red bangs to the side with her hand to press an affectionate kiss to his forehead. "Hello, miss me?"

He had been in the middle of one such nap when Princess Amelia approached.
Chuckling sheepishly, Koumei reached up and grasped her hand in his.
"Always, my lady," he murmured and, in a sweeping gesture with his arm, motioned for her to take a seat nearby.
Though this was difficult work, he truly didn't mind the company.
When the proposal for a political marriage had come into the fore in order to solidify the alliance between Kou and Seyruun, the Imperial Advisors had run into the curious problem of having run out of marriageable princesses. Though it was true that Hakuei still remained unpromised to wed, her status as a Dungeon Capturer was too valuable a war asset to just give up. The same could be said for the next marriagable candidate, his eccentric younger brother Kouha. Although, given the former's reputation and what he had heard of the young Amelia, it was almost certain that the two of them would find a common ground more easily, Kouha was similarly needed on the front lines.
Koumei, on the other hand, had free maneuverability.
The proposal had entirely been his idea, although his elder brother had made extensive argument against such a union. Her reputation was wild-- but her habits were no different from the eccentricities of his own siblings. Furthermore, her bright presence was a welcome distraction for him. Any excuse to step outside of his study and relax for a few moments was more than welcome in his eyes, and she had so far made no complaints about his own personal habits that included a tendency to work too hard, forget to eat, and forget to sleep.
Everything was working out much better than he had hoped for.
"What brought you in so early?" he asked, passing a glance out the window at the afternoon sun. "There's still some time before we were supposed to meet-- nothing is set yet."

Honestly she wasn't all that keen on breaking the close proximity between them, but she didn't wish to cause a big mess by perching on his desk and possibly messing up the organized chaos of all that paperwork. After all, she knew from experience what a nightmare such a thing could be. Besides that, how could she say no to such a gentlemanly tone, or a touch that somehow made her skin prickle with warmth? Simply put, she couldn't, so she obeyed and placed herself in a nearby chair, though made the effort to scoot as close as space would allow.
"Well I'm glad that sentiment is mutual. I was worried I was the the only one." she chuckled.
Maybe she was too much of a romantic at heart, not being realistic and attempting to convince herself that this would all work out. However, she had hardly imagined all of her fiances admirable traits, and during her questions early on regarding the man she was asked to accept as her future husband, there had been those who sung his praises as a strategist with a great loyalty to his lands, despite the fact he wasn't likely to rule. She could certainly relate to that, wanting the best of your people no matter what your circumstance. Certainly Seyruun was more peaceful, being a kingdom of white magic, healing and exorcism, but there had been more than a fair share of turmoil in the royal family. Amelia's mother had been the victim of a botched assassination, which caused her older sister to go off on a journey she had yet to return from, and she had already had to bury two close relatives who had jealously tried to usurp the throne by attempting to kill both the princess and her father.
Instead of bottling herself up, hiding in a tower and being afraid however, she had forgiven, smiled and continued to try her best. That always shone through, and perhaps that was why despite their differences, she and Koumei had managed to grow closer, to the point where spending her life with him would soon not be a choice she made simply out of duty, but desire. She could only hope that, as she had already stated, feelings continued to be mutual between them.
"Apparently the predictions for the weather were mistaken, so we weren't held up by the storm we anticipated we'd be travelling through." she explained, knowing he was just expressing his surprise, but couldn't resist puffing her cheeks a little with a feigned huff, looking more cute than angry. "Aww, and I thought you'd be happy with the surprise. After all it means we get to spend more time together, or am I really as big of a handful and people keep telling me I am?" she teased, smiling despite the supposed act of annoyance. The fact that she had yet to stop squeezing his hand in her smaller one likely didn't help in convincing anyone she was mad either.

Sorry this is so late!
Hey, Warren! Over here! [ And there was 5'2'' of boundless energy, coming toward him, waving and smiling. Still in her school uniform. Clearly she had come straight from classes. ]
No problems! I'm a backtagging machine :'>
Hey! Dal Dal!
Thank god. Me too. ;;
So, what are we doing?
[ During this hanging out that was most certainly not a date. Nope. No resemblance to that at all. No feelings here. Probably. Maybe. ]
Woo! \o/
I forced you to play video games with me last time, so I figured we should do something you really wanted to do this time. Anything. Even if it's the weirdest thing you could think up.

Ugh, just kill me. [stiles says with a groan, mostly muffled face down into the pillow before he decides that he doesn't actually want to die and, as a result, breathing might be a thing he'd like to do some time soon.
he heaves himself over onto his side and after recoiling dramatically from the admittedly low ambient light of the room, immediately recognizes that he's not in his room. which means... so maybe suffocating into the pillow wasn't an altogether terrible idea after all.] I am an embarrassment to everything, just promise you'll be merciful when you take my life, Allison.
Say something nice at my eulogy maybe.
