SWORN TO THE SWORD shipping meme It's textbook, really. Or, more accurately, parchment, because you've either found yourself or always been in a time (it doesn't necessarily have to be medieval) where swords - and possibly sorcery - are the weapons and the mindset of the day; at the very least, the rough and tumble attitude that comes with a knife's edge permeates the land. And you know how to wield a weapon, be it a blade, your own body, or something else entirely, so you've put it to good use. You've become a sworn sword to protect someone. It could be out of the goodness of your heart, out of heritage, or stemmed from a desire for compensation or power. No matter what the cause, however, one fact remains the same, and that's how you cannot let emotions cloud your judgement. Of course, that may be a little easier said than done. When you're so close to a person, in order to keep them safe, and when you put your very life on the line... ...ah, but you must persevere. Your duty does not allow you to falter. There were certain things Stella just couldn't even hope to comprehend. Some people couldn't understand how a bridge could survive a flood, some couldn't understand how a sword was different from a plow. Stella, on the other hand, couldn't tie the simple knot that would make sure the tent she shared with Brienne would actually not collapse on them in the middle of the night. She had tried nearly twenty times over the last hour while the small camp had somehow magically sprung up around her but she still hadn't managed a simple set of loops.

After a few more minutes, Stella finally sighed with open defeat. She could make random sounds into music that could inspire the most tone deaf into greatness, could even make food out of anything edible and healing come from the souls around her. But... music, edible food, and soul enrichment tended to take second place to a big thunderstorm just about to make an evening absolutely torture.

I'm sorry, I'm a complete failure again, Brienne... It doesn't seem that I have any ability at this no matter how many times you show me." Stella buried her eyes in her arms and snuggled her legs closer to her chest.

Neria's stomach was in knots as she stepped aboard the rowboat meant to take her from Kinloch Hold -- the only home she'd ever known. She was being transferred to some far off Circle in Orlais, because the First Enchanter had noted her expertise in using her Arcane Warrior abilities towards healing spells, as opposed to close combat. Through correspondence with another Circle's First Enchanter, it was decided she would be the perfect instructor of this discipline there.

Setting her hands in her lap, she tried not to fidget as she left behind all she knew. She figured the Templar with her would immediately assume she was hiding something. Wasn't that what all Templars thought?

He'd been happy at Kinloch, truly happy, but he knew as a Templar he ran the risk of being transferred wherever he was needed. He just didn't expect it to happen to him so soon. The other young men in the barracks must have report him to the Knight-Commander. Why else would he have been chosen for such an important task?

He was Alistair, a no-body, a passable recruit, nothing special. And yet here he was, assigned to take one of the young mages from Kinloch to Orlais, to become a teacher. A great honour, he was sure. Just not for him.

Standing in the boat, watching Kincloch fade into the distance, he tried not to fidget. What would she think of him if he did?

It was only once they were across the lake and she had stepped out onto the dock that Neria realized what was happening. The Tower had been home, but it had also been a prison. They were hardly ever allowed out into the walled garden, and only under strict supervision so no one made a break for it. And she was too young to remember being brought to the Tower in the first place, so as she walked forward onto the grass, her heart leapt in her chest. She was somewhere new. She wasn't free, but it felt as close as she would ever get. No longer behind stone walls and windows too high to see out of.

Her eyes darted everywhere. What was that? A house? An inn? A tavern? Could they go see? No, the Templar wouldn't allow that. So overwhelmed, she had to close her eyes to absorb it all. Then she breathed deep. Even the air was different. Not stale like inside the Tower.

"It's so... so open," she whispered, opening her eyes.

He watched her, watched her response, and frowned underneath his helmet while they crossed the lake. She couldn't run, it had been drilled into his head how she must be brought safely to Ostwick.

It was only when they were away from the dock, and away from being overheard that he took his helm off, and turned to face her. "How long have you been in the circle?" he asked, curious now.

"All my life," she answered immediately. Others in the Circle had asked her before. But she realized that wasn't possible -- even the children of mages who were taken away landed in the Chantry first so they could be watched for magical abilities before turning them over to the Circle.

"I mean, I was too young to remember my life before, so it seems like my whole life. This is the first time I remember being outside Kinloch Hold."

She didn't expect sympathy from him. As far as she knew, all Templars were taught that mages were sinful, punished by the Maker for some reason.
