[Don shrinks from the compliment, but not from the fond touch. It's too new and too nice to squirm away from just because it's embarrassing. That describes the whole situation, really. Stuffed up in a makeshift tent in his boyfriend's old bedroom with twinkly lights, getting crumbs on the sheets.]

A prince and a cabin boy who's too brave for his own good. That's a good fairy tale, right?

[He has a mild fascination with them since the ring thing. Could you blame him?]

[Gai may have already bought him one of those pretty and inexplicably inexpensive chain-bookstore editions of the Grimm stories. Because he's a nerd.]

Hey, yeah! [Truth be told, that's been on his mind a lot too--what was that line he heard in some movie? Something about true love not coming along every day?] A cool dragonslaying pirate prince. The cabin boy falls in love with him at first sight, of course. [He says this airily, like a little kid declaring the rules of a make-believe game, before his last bite of sandwich.]

And the cabin boy is... offputting, at first. He's one of those people who shine too bright and make people nervous when they don't think they can shine like that.

[He flexes his toes in his ridiculous socks, smiling but not looking at Gai.]

He doesn't mean to, though. [Gai's voice drops a little, like this is a secret.] It's just that... he's got enough light that he can see how amazing the prince is. Because he is, you know. He's smart, and handsome, and curious about stuff, and very kind.

[justcallmedoc]

[Don covers his face with both hands. Which means he kinda smooshes his sandwich into his face for a second.] M- maybe we should tell scary stories instead!

[enthusianchor]

[For once, though, that modesty--okay, let's be real, that cringe reflex--kinda nags at Gai. He reaches over with his now-sandwichless hand to curl his fingers around one of Don's wrists.]

You know I don't say that stuff to embarrass you, right? [There's a tiny, hopeful smile playing at the corner of his mouth.]

Don't make that face!

I know! [Don squirms and his pulse runs faster under Gai's fingertips.] But it makes me get all- [He gestures vaguely to his reddened face.] It makes me get like this when people say nice stuff to me, and I feel dumb when it's you and you see me like that.

So.

I know it's dumb.

[enthusianchor]

It's not dumb, it's just... [The hand that's been playing with Don's hair settles at the back of his neck.] I don't want you to feel like I'm teasing you. [A beat.] Or like my parents are, either. If they say nice things to you it's not because they feel like they have to.

[justcallmedoc]

Oh, no! [He waves his hands - and his sandwich - in appeal.] It's not that! I'm just... not used to it, you know? I was really shy growing up, and then I was alone for a long time, so I'm not used to being the center of attention.

[enthusianchor]

[The thought of Don all by himself, not knowing he could be precious to anyone, twists Gai's heart a little. Quickly he leans in, aiming to kiss Don's forehead, though thanks to his bad leg the angle's kinda wrong and he ends up kissing him on the eyebrow. Whoops. But still!]

You're already doing great. I promise.

[justcallmedoc]

[Don laughs and presses his very warm face into Gai's shoulder.] I'll try my best, then. With enthusiasm! [He's grinning when he returns to his food, and halfway through his sandwich he nudges Gai again.]

I do know scary stories from my home world, though.

[enthusianchor]

Yeah? [Sitting in companionable quiet inside a blanket fort is pretty high on his list of Great Things To Do With Your Boyfriend, but hearing alien scary stories sounds like it could be up there too!] What kinda scary? Ghosts? Monsters? Joe-san in a bad mood?

Well! [Oh, sometimes he does like attention, especially when Gai looks at him all rapt like that. He snacks on his sandwich a little and makes Gai wait while he picks out a good story.]

There's the Doorwatcher, that one's scary. [He says 'Doorwatcher,' literally, in Space English.]

[enthusianchor]

Doorwatcher, huh? [Gai sort of rolls the word around in his head as he says it. It sounds weird and sinister, like some of the ghost stories his classmates told when he was a kid.] Tell me about it. [He shifts a little, getting comfortable. Better keep Don close just in case he gets freaked out.]

Doorwatchers don't like daylight. [Like most spooky things, but Don can't un-cliche a bogeyman tale he didn't write.] So, during the day they get really small and hide in the overhangs of roofs. They suck their big, strong bodies up into their little tiny heads and they hide and they wait until it gets dark, then they float down to see if someone left your door unlocked. And if it's unlocked, the Doorwatcher will open it up with its great big hands [Here he lifts a hand to cast a shadow on the quilt wall opposite them] and come inside and check all the doors. And if it finds anybody behind an open door, it will float into the room and kill them so it can have the house and stay out of the sun forever.

[enthusianchor]

[As Don tells the story, Gai settles in, his eyes getting rounder and wider. Don's a better storyteller than he gives himself credit for (a better anything than he gives himself credit for, really), and the shadow puppetry helps immensely. For a moment after he's done, Gai just sort of stares in awe.

Then a car alarm goes off outside and he yelps like a puppy who just heard thunder. The entire fort wobbles perilously as he tries to burrow against Don's chest.] No no no door's locked door's locked!!

[Don grins and pats the back of Gai's head. This brings back memories, but not one is bitter and there's this new sweetness swirled up in them.] It's okay, Gai, I know you're a good boy who locks his doors at night. Besides, they don't honk. They don't make any noise at all~

[enthusianchor]

[The initial jolt of panic wears off fairly quickly. Gai's face does this weird thing like it can't decide whether to settle into embarrassment or delight, and he pokes Don in the ribs.]

Aw man, now I'm gonna be awake all night! [And another poke. He might be attempting tickling. You can't prove anything.]

[Don's spooky story face falters for a second when he bunches up on himself and snickers.] That's okay, right? We can stay up together.

Telling scary stories.

I mean.

[enthusianchor]

[Ohoho~ That grin is back in full force now, only somehow it's turned as wicked as Gai can manage. Which isn't very, but still.]

As long as the door's still locked. That way we know we're safe until somebody else gets home. [A pause, and then--] Your world doesn't have any monsters that like to attack people when they're making out, right?

[SO SMOOTH.]

Not that I recall~ [It's not easy to be suave with crumbs on your shirt, but Don is trying.] Does Earth, or are we safe?

[enthusianchor]

Not that I know of~ [Granted, it's Japan, so there's probably at least one terrifying local ghost that hates happy couples somewhere in that country. But not in Tokyo!] So we better make double sure we're safe.

[Blanket fort, scary stories, cute super sentai boyfriend. Gai is the poster boy for living the dream right now.]
