[FUTURE AU] meme

Sometimes imagining the future is exciting, sometimes it's scary; however, nothing compares to actually experiencing it firsthand. Either through the natural passage of time or a time displacement mishap, you have now arrived 10, 20, even 30 years into the future. Where are you now and is it where you wanted to be? Or did it go very, very wrong somewhere? Hero-turned-villain, villain-turned-hero, the apocalypse... there are so very many bad ends out there. Hopefully you'll luck out and see something amazing like world peace or, at the very least, a loving family and friends surrounding you.

[how to]
| Post character's name, canon and preferences.
| Decide a scenario and tag around.
| Have fun with time!

Billy Kaplan | Marvel 616 | ota, m/m for shipping

[personal profile] noassgardian 2015-09-06 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
option a; Sorcerer Supreme
[Billy goes on to become the future Sorcerer Supreme and works alongside the X-Men. He has grown more level-headed and confident in his abilities, lacking the self-doubt of his younger self.]

option b; Inferno
[Billy appears to be older and more grizzled in what's essentially the apocalypse. The world has been overrun with demons, and he works with other mystics and scientists to keep them out. This can either be before the demons fight through their defenses and he has to run or during an at least somewhat peaceful lull.]

option c; Demiurge
[Billy has gone on to fulfill his destiny of mystical messiah, rewriting the laws of magic, etc. Either he's a benevolent being who wants to only do good or he's gone astray and lost touch with his humanity, making him a daunting force to reckon with.]

option d; wildcard
[Have some other scenario you'd like to do? Hit me up!]

what would you like to do or shall we continue from the last one and say they miraculously survived their crazy scheme? c:]

[Excuse you I'm your only demon.

[oh you

and fine, you are his one and only demon!]

In the end, Billy isn't sure how they pulled it off and remained both intact... well, to some degree. Dorrek wasn't known for his mercy and they both knew their scheme could potentially end with at least one of them dying. If he was the type, he'd call it a miracle that they were both still whole at the very least

Especially considering it seemed to be a success on their part. Dorrek wouldn't have access to any sort of dangerous, world-ending magics. Not for a while at least. It was a blow enough to his empire and he'd have to retreat for now. It would give the earth time to recover, reorganize scattered defenses at least. That's all anyone could really ask for.

"Daimon?" Billy starts after a moment, dusting off his tattered uniform and nursing some injuries. That was forgotten in favor of searching around for the demon though, making sure he was as alive as he was.

He really hadn't called on an old friend to get him killed after all. Billy rather preferred to avoid that whenever possible.

"You better answer me."
hellstorm: ((d) Hi there)

[personal profile] hellstorm 2015-09-08 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah he was alive. So there's that.

Maybe a little burned out too, if they were going for understatements of the year, sprawled on top of a still smoldering pile of rubble, because these sort of fights never ended pretty.

The fallout was immense, but the army had been equally so. Even Daimon was surprised that they'd ended up 'last men standing'.

Or not standing, in his case, but he was just catching his breath.

He tips his head back at Billy's voice, squinting through the smoke before thrusting his blackened arm into the air to offer him a thumbs-up.

"Present."
noassgardian: ((b) 01)

[personal profile] noassgardian 2015-09-08 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
There's a sigh in relief when he finally catches sight of Daimon, lost in some rubble... and yeah, that was pretty much what was all around them. War isn't pretty. But they'd survived it and Billy can't help but give a tired, amused smile at the thumbs-up.

He could have offered a hand to get him up, but it's easier to take a breather of his own now and just settle heavily down next to him.

"Good. I guess you're still mostly in one piece, right?" He tilts his head, studying him for a moment.

"That will be much easier to get back home."

Thanks to her zero coping skills, Batman is now a way shadier vigilante who doesn't have a problem killing off her villains. Also, she might be in control of like. The eastern half of the US. Whoops?

Augur: at some point, Tim retires from active heroing (I'm not saying it has anything to do with her lack of spleen but it might) and takes on a more Oracle-like role.

this got super long sorry 8v

[personal profile] withtheoldbreed 2015-09-07 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Gene had honestly been expecting that he'd misheard the Army captain when he called the lieutenant standing next to him "Darmody". It had been on Okinawa, and he was so exhausted and sore after their time on the front line that he honestly wouldn't have been surprised to hear he was just dreaming, or unconsciously thinking wishfully about the promise he'd made about after the war. He can't die here because he promised Jimmy he'd come see him, so-

He'd fallen out of line and jogged through the mud to catch up with the officer. Burgie had called after him, but Snaf didn't, watching quietly, like he knows what Gene's doing and why. Maybe he does.

(They don't talk about it, but Gene knows Snaf remembers. It's hard being back here, knowing what they've been through together, knowing that they need to keep their hands to themselves.)

"Excuse me," he'd called, tacking on a "sir" belatedly, and when the men turned around, Gene wasn't sure he recognizes the lieutenant. How could he? The last time he'd seen a picture of Tommy Darmody, he'd been barely more than a toddler, and the lieutenant's at least Ack Ack's age.

(Ack Ack's home safe, already recovered after some time in a Navy hospital, but Gene remembers watching his body get taken back, and hearing Burgie announce "Sniper got the Skipper" with a shaky voice, even if his friend doesn't.)

"Can I help you with something, Marine?" the lieutenant asked, apparently knowing Gene's asking him, and not the captain. Something about the intensity of Gene's gaze must've give it away.

"Your name's Darmody, sir?"

"Yes," he said, frowning in confusion.

"Tommy Darmody? Your father's Jimmy?"

"You know my father?"

Fuck. Somehow, Gene hadn't quite planned for that, and he found himself fumbling for a possible explanation.

"My father served with him, durin' the war. Edward Sledge. Always mentioned he was sorry they'd fallen outta touch."

The answer seemed to satisfy Tommy - not a kid anymore, older than Gene, older even than Jimmy was when Gene had known him - although his expression didn't get any less pensive. It actually got a little sad. "The name doesn't found familiar. My father doesn't talk much about the war."

Gene bit his lip, halfway to saying something more to convince him, but Tommy made it unnecessary.

"You got any paper?"

Gene fumbled in his pockets for his Bible, pulling it out of the waterproof jacket he'd gotten for it and somehow finds a blank square of paper in the margins. Tommy produced a pencil and scribbled something in it.

"That's his address. Runs a garage in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. I'll tell him I ran into his buddy's kid."

Gene took the Bible back, hoping his hands aren't trembling too badly. At least he could likely blame it on fatigue. "Thank you, sir."

Tommy smiled, tipped his standard issue soft green cap, and turned to leave with his CO. "Good luck, Private."

"You too, sir." And God, he meant it. Stay safe. Please.

That had been almost a year ago. Now, it's 1946. Gene's been back in the states for a few weeks, spending time with his parents and trying to get used to sleeping in a bed again, trying to shake the feeling that he's not safe without a weapon on him, trying to figure out how to make this thing between him and Snafu work now that they'd not in combat and not on the Barge, and it's all exhausting. He doesn't know what he wants to do with his life. Doesn't know where to go, doesn't know how to be the person he'd been when he left home, and eventually, Mobile starts feeling too suffocating. He needs to get out of here, and that's when he decides to make good on his promise to find Jimmy.

The trip to Wisconsin's a long one, and he hugs his mother at the platform and shakes his father's hand, promising to be back in a week or two at most. He'd said goodbye to Sid and Snaf yesterday. He boards the train alone, stows his suitcase, and takes a window seat, watching the country effortlessly slide on by.

(Snafu's taking care of some business in New Orleans while he does this, and it's strange not having the other marine - former marine - nearby after years of being nearly inseparable. He keeps looking at the person sitting across from him like he's expecting to see the familiar obnoxious smile and bright eyes of his best friend, and not a stooped, older gentleman wearing a suit with worn out elbows.)

The train pulls into the station, and Gene hitches a ride to the garage with an old woman who can barely see over the steering wheel of her truck. She talks the whole way about how nice it is to have her grandson home from Europe finally, that she keeps feeding him cobbler until he's about to burst because the Army definitely hadn't been feeding him well enough for her tastes. She doesn't ask where Gene served, but seems to know or assume he did anyway, and he appreciates it. He's found he doesn't like talking about it much.

He thanks her profusely when they get to the garage, leaving her with some of the canned peaches his mother had insisted he bring with him (she'd tried to say no, but relented when Gene pointed out they'd be good in another cobbler), and then he's standing in front of the garage Jimmy had said he was going to start the last time he'd seen him. Ages ago now. Gene's not yet twenty three, but feels like he should be in his thirties at least, between the Barge and how long the war seemed to stretch for him.

It's Sunday, and the garage is quiet. He picks up his bag and walks to the front door, but finds himself hesitating before knocking or ringing the bell, just the same way he'd done when he first got home. He's come all this way, but for some reason, he's nervous now.

(Is Richard still here? Is he alive? Did Tommy make it off Okinawa alright? Did Jimmy get married again, have any more kids? Does he still look the same, even if it's twenty years later? How's he going to react when he sees how hollowed out and tired Gene's become because he refused to take the easy way out and go home?

Does Jimmy even remember Gene, or the Barge, or any of it?)

But Eugene Sledge isn't and has never been a coward, or been good at backing down from a challenge, so he takes a breath and raps quickly at the door, trying not to fidget as he waits for someone to answer.

It's been a long, long twenty years; but they haven't been as long as the first twenty years had been. It had taken so much more time and effort to get settled the way he'd imagined it for himself and Tommy back on the Barge: it had started with taking Tommy away from Atlantic City without people like Nucky noticing. Without his mother trying to follow them.

In the end, he'd given her all the savings he had, everything he'd had stashed away, and told her she could visit, write, call if they had a phone out there. She'd screamed at him, about how he was the worst thing that had happened to her, and almost, almost stayed-- but he looked at Richard's pained expression, and Tommy's tear-filled eyes, and he held fast.

So they left. Packed their suitcases, got on a train, hitched a ride, walked- left. All the way to rural Wisconsin, where they found Richard's sister, Richard's father. Richard's sister swallowed back tears and slapped him before drawing him in for a hug- and then she took one look at Tommy, at Jimmy, and sighed before she went to make up the rooms.

They settled in. Slowly but surely, Tommy went to school, and Richard got a job in construction nearby, and Jimmy started fixing up cars in the neighborhood. Eventually he bought a house in town and converted it into a garage; Tommy and him up on the second floor, the business on the ground floor. There was a room for Richard, whenever he wasn’t off for work.

Tommy enlisted, of course. He signed up, contract and all, in the late thirties. They fell out over it and didn’t speak for months, until Jimmy realized how fucking stupid he was being. But it hurt, knowing what he knew.

And then war came back around. Like he'd known it would, and like he'd known would happen Tommy was shipped out. And Jimmy has had plenty of awful things happen to him over the course of his life, has been to war himself, has been shot, killed, betrayed-- but watching his son leave him, Richard by his side, was the second hardest thing he ever had to do.

The hardest thing he ever had to do was put a cross over an empty grave, knowing that Tommy wasn’t on the Barge, or anywhere like that, a placet hat could give him hope- he was scattered over a fucking island in the Pacific. Like he’d known would happen if he let him go.

The year after the war is almost unspeakably hard. Richard lives close by, but he’s found a woman who takes him for who he is, who doesn’t mind the scars. So Jimmy wakes up to an empty house, works in an empty garage until Richard makes his way over. Tommy’s sweetheart visits sometimes, but as the year drags on that becomes less and less. Eventually, he picks himself back up, throws himself into town meetings, new customers, renovations, anything to keep him busy. He’s finally starting to feel less raw every time he sees a young man in uniform, and then comes the knock.

It’s not that he’d forgotten. But the possibility of Gene somehow being from a different world, of not being able to visit at all- it had been realistic of him not to expect all of it. But there he is, looking worn and hollow and tired, but only a year or two older, all in all.

It’s very , very hard to choke back the tears, but he does it. Instead, he doesn’t say anything- just leans forward and wraps one big, fatherly hand around his neck, pulling him close.

Gene's self control isn't quite as good. There's a few seconds before Jimmy moves where he just stares at his friend, takes in the new lines in his face and the slight traces of gray in his hair, and he wonders abruptly if this is what Steve felt like to come out of the ice and discover seventy years had passed.

(Thing is, Gene probably looks different, too. This is probably the first time outside of a breach or port where Jimmy's seen him wearing anything but his uniform.)

But then Jimmy's pulling him in, and Gene doesn't hesitate this time. His arms go around his former inmate's back and hold on tightly. His eyes sting, so he closes them, trying to ignore the fact that he's trembling a little and that his throat's getting tighter, because part of him sort of wants to cry. It's almost like the first time he hugged his mother when he'd first got back, and the thing is, he hasn't seen Jimmy in about as long as he'd last seen his mother. It really has been a long time.

Not as long as it's been for Jimmy, though. That thought and reminder makes Gene hug him a little tighter, like maybe it'll be enough to prove he's really here, that he kept the promise he made to him the last time they'd seen each other.

Gene missed him. He really did. He'd made new friends and of course he'd had others, too, but Jimmy's always been the one he missed the most.

The moment stretches, and Gene doesn't know what to say. He feels a little like he should admit Jimmy was right, that it had been a mistake to take the risk or not go home, but if he hadn't been on Okinawa, he never would've met Tommy, would never have gotten this address, wouldn't have been able to live with the guilt of getting out of the war easily, so maybe it worked out.

He takes a shaky breath, trying to keep his voice steady. It comes out a little hoarse, and he still feels embarrassingly like crying. "Didn't have a number, otherwise I would've called-"

"Ain't like I was goin' anywhere, Gene," he says, and his voice is hoarse- not from disuse, but from barely held-back emotion. Gene isn't skinny, but he's gaunt, worse than he'd been when they met each other on the Barge. He threads his fingers through Gene's hair and lets out a little pained noise.

It's more than the kind of reaction you'd expect. This isn't just a reunion, a long-overdue meeting between two close friends. He's too emotional for that, his arms and shoulders lined with too much grief.

He swallows thickly, then pulls away, take a look at Gene from close by. "How'd you get the address? Call up every county clerk in the state?"

It would probably be worse if he was seeing Gene right after coming off Okinawa. He's had a year of eating decent food in China and in the States to help replace the weight he'd lost on Okinawa, without being shot at or saturated in a freezing foxhole, or any number of other things. The soles of his feet are finally starting to look more normal, and a few weeks of being home and having time to relax - even if it's been hard, so much harder than he thought - have done him some good.

He smiles a little sheepishly when Jimmy pulls back, keeping his hands on his friend's upper arms and taking him in again, noticing all the little ways he still definitely looks like the guy he'd known and all the differences, too.

The answer is definitely not what Jimmy is going to expect, but of course, Gene doesn't know why this is going to hit hard. How could he?

"I ran into Tommy on Okinawa. He gave it to me."

A long time ago, Jimmy would have replied with anger, disbelief, paranoia. That was before he was shot, before he came to the Barge, before he learned and changed. Before Gene.

Instead, he cycles through a range of expressions- hurt, shock, as if he'd been slapped, and then a deep, deep pain.

"You ran into Tommy?" When he hears himself, he'll be surprised if Gene can understand him at all. He doesn't know how long he'll be able to keep talking.

"How-- How was he, when you saw him? Did you talk to him?"

[Feel free to pick one of the following, or comment with your own ideas! I'm pretty flexible.

I. Vergil won the battle against Mundus and returned to the human world to tie up loose ends. He's been training Nero and owns a shop called Devil Never Cry. It's a sister shop to Devil May Cry, but Vergil's establishment deals with exterminating problematic humans instead of demons. People like Arkham that are on their way to becoming demons, or just awful people that have somehow evaded the law.

II. Dante managed to figure out Nero Angelo was really his brother and saved him instead of killing him on Mallet Island. He bears scars both physical and otherwise, but he lived.

III. Vergil died during the Mundus fight and became the soul within Yamato, making it a Devil Arm.]

For Xanxus

Tsuna of this world was at least smarter than the one from Kyoya's timeline. For all that the teen might spend his time at Namimori, there was still an edge of impatience under his skin, that curl of fingers that even sparring against the Vongola Decimo wasn't enough. It says enough that when Tsuna subtly suggests that Kyoya spend some time with the Varia, that he doesn't argue, even though it means leaving Namimori.

After Byakuran's defeat, the Vongola are in full restoration mode. Fixing things, taking stock of alliances, rebuilding what was ruined. The Varia on the other hand, are working damage control. The remnants of the Millefiore still exist, and with Byakuran gone that's a very large power vacuum just waiting for someone to step into.

Kyoya doesn't follow orders well, or really at all, but he's good at what he does. As they come back from a mission Squalo is yelling at him about not listening, telling him he can't just chase down and fight whoever he wants to, picking on him for still wearing his Namimori uniform. There's pause and then there's a moment where he turns, and he's glaring up into his face as the man calls him a shitty brat and they're about to break into a fight right there.

Right up until Fran sneaks up and tosses one arm over each of their shoulders and casually insults them both in that deadpan way he has about him. Hitting Fran seems to defuse the situation and things go back to the pleasant lull of violence and insults that so well characterize the Varia. Needless to say, teenager displaced in time that he is, he still somehow fits in.

It's later, but not too much later, when things have quieted and he wanders into the kitchen, intending to make himself something and steal a soda, only to find Xanxus of all people stirring something on the stove. He leans in the doorway for a moment, and then steals a soda from the fridge, and gives less than a fuck the shit that he gets for not being a functioning alcoholic like the rest of them. He leans against the edge of the counter, watching him as he moves and the rest of the Varia seem to have wandered off to their individual hobbies; if Levi's around, he's gotten better at hiding.

"It smells good," he admits, not quite willing to walk away. They've sparred a few times, but rather than satisfying his curiosity with the man it just made it worse, somehow.

So, it's still sort of weird as fuck to have Hibari around. Xanxus had never been a fan of that whole time travel bullshittery and he's made that well known. But he probably has the one person who hates it more. Because at least he's not stuck. Not that he feels sorry for the teen. He doesn't have room for things like pity or sympathy. They have shit to do and if Hibari can't keep up, then he'll be replaced. And fuck Tsuna.

Because he didn't have the patience to play babysitter.

Tsuna had dumped Hibari on him, probably because Xanxus has more skill handling ridiculous mouthy brats that enjoy blood and carnage. In the end, Hibari was the best gift the Decimo ever gave him, even if he really wasn't, that's what Xanxus has decided about that.

Still, the little shit needs to be more careful about stalking around and catching him doing domestic shit. He had a reputation. Cooking anything for himself sort of kills that dead. But since he's been caught, he can at least own that shit. "Of course it does. Unlike the rest of the scum here, I actually can make things that aren't trying to kill us."

He makes a gesture next to him. "Try some. The taste says it for itself."
