The department doesn't talk much about him. It's somewhat of an open secret, an old tragedy that had briefly made national headlines, woven inextricably into the files. Most of the case notes and photographs are digitized now, but there are hints of him everywhere--his half-cursive scrawl on chain of custody forms, his gloved hands captured in images of evidence, his name etched into a shiny plaque nestled amidst tarnished awards near the lobby. His old employee file is on the system too, bearing a picture of him with neatly slicked hair and thick glasses, his lips raised in a pleasant smile. In a way she can see the progression if she trawls through the news archives--that neat hair devolving into loose, oily strands; the clean-shaven face giving way to stubble, the smile dropping to a forced line.
Tonight he looks fractionally more put-together, dressed in an overcoat and hat, the collar of his shirt the only hint of his characteristic green. The diner is quiet, being that they're in at such a late hour, and he takes a good look around before seating himself across from her and stripping off his gloves, necessarily paranoid.
"Officer Dawes," he greets. "I was half-expecting you not to show up."

[As she pushed the door in front of her open, Amelia adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder, weaving around the other students, most of whom towered over her quite a bit in height, as she headed for the campus gates. And yet, despite the heavy throng of people that made most faces indistinguishable in the crowd, his face stood out.]
[Then again it was rather hard not to be drawn in his direction with all the cooing and squealing of the girls that surrounded Ikki, clearly eager to have his full attention now classes were done for the day. From the looks of things, he wasn't against the idea either, which was why she was able to convince herself that it had been a wise decision to for once use her head and keep a respectable distance from him, no matter how nice it had been initially to talk with him before she discovered anything about his apparent dating habits and entourage.]
[Oh sure, she remained friendly and polite in the few casual encounters they had during the classes they shared, not possessing the icy demeanor needed to give anyone the cold shoulder, but she went against her nature and restrained some of her usual bubbly disposition. After all, while she might not think it right for his fan club to hiss and spit at anyone not of their ranks who came within ten feet of Ikki, she had never seen the young man scold anyone for such acts. It seemed like he found it acceptable, something that further proved to her that their ideals were clearly far too different to ever make them compatible.]
[So, she just walked on by, focusing her gaze forward as she made her way into town, intending to just clear her head by browsing through some of the stores for the afternoon. She would get over these feelings eventually she told herself. And besides even if they weren't counted as official relationships, to her eyes he practically had many girls on the go already, and she wasn't too keen to be seen as the hussy who made him cheat on his adoring fans.]
