[Gai's had a lot on his mind lately. It's kind of hard not to, since two members of their little family have had an insanely public wedding, and Luka's been acting cagey about some kind of project of her own. Not to mention the power vacuum left by Zangyack means they have a lot more stuff to figure out--and a whole host of rumors about powerful artifacts that all the contenders are trying to chase down.
The rumors are kind of a springboard for his own agenda, though. Never mind that he's now in debt to Luka for basically everything but his left kidney. Gai's been spending weeks and weeks on research and now his plan is all about to come together. First he found a couple of books about Don's home planet in a library where there was supposed to be some kind of magic tome (it turned out the magic was the joy of reading all along). Then he took out a loan from the Bank of Millfy, agreeing to do all her chores for a year, so he could chase down the bits and bobs he needed in pawn shops on a dozen different alien worlds.
Now they're on a little garden planet, owned by an eccentric lady billionaire, which has been entirely terraformed into a series of greenhouses. It's rumored that she grows not only a tree with golden fruit, but one that bears a single apple every year which will grant any wish. Far-fetched, but there's a family of nasty lizard kaijin who wish they ruled the universe, so the Gokaigers need to make sure they beat them to it.
Gai's looking for something far smaller, though. A flower native to Don's home planet, whose name translates as "stardust". It's small and unassuming--the pictures he's seen remind him of lilies of the valley, with sprays of pale pastel blossoms on arcing green stems--but it's the last thing he needs. He's even willing to pay for it. Secretly, though, because real pirates steal.]
[Don's... not enthused about this whole magic apple business. Wish-granting doodads tend to be a font of trouble, and if this one turns out to be legitimate there's a non-zero chance he'll blast it and save everyone the trouble. Never mind that he's not the biggest fan of sprawling gardens right now, even a few weeks after the space witch incident.
And Gai's been spending a lot of time around Luka lately. Which shouldn't be on Don's mind at all because Gai is Gai. But Luka's a lot cooler than Don.
So Don's not in the best mood when he goes for a walk to get away from pirate chatter for a while.]
[Of course, once Gai's finished excitedly confirming with Luka (and Ahim, and Marvelous who he's sure will tell Joe) that they're all gonna look for the stardust flowers when they split up to find the macguffin trees, he notices that Don's slunk off. It takes him a minute or two longer to catch up than he'd like, thanks to the heavy backpack he's toting around.]
Heeeeey Don! [He's got that dumb "I have a secret and I'm gonna make you tease it out of me" grin on his face.] Looks like there's no witches out today, huh?
[Oh no. Don definitely doesn't want Gai when he's feeling cagey and moody. That will only make things worse. But there's no way to chase him off without appearing suspicious. Or being a jerk.]
Nope! No witches.
[He's being dumb. Obviously. Knowing that might not help, but the sunshine does even if he's not in the mood to acknowledge that. Somebody on this team has to be the worrywart, right?]
What look~? [As per usual, he's oblivious to the little storm cloud hanging over Don.] Anyway. Ready to search for those trees? I brought lunch in case it's a long day. [And something else, but shh.]
Dangit, Gai, don't talk tildes to a man in a bad mood.
...Lunch? [Don likes cooking. It's why he's the cook. But he also really, really likes the rare times when he doesn't have to. The sun almost seems to shine a little brighter and warmer on him.] What'd you make?
Something special. Real hearty, to keep your spirits up during the search! [Oooooh he's so excited. And so oblivious!] I bet you anything we beat Luka-san to the punch.
[Well. It's probably not booze, since this is Gai and not Marvelous. Don inspects a nearby stand of blue flowers one might describe as curly to lend some nonchalance to anything he's stupid enough to say next.]
You and Luka, you're getting along pretty well recently, huh? That's good.
Well... yeah! [Huh. Did he imagine it or is Don not quite his usual self? Nah, couldn't be.] She's been helping me out with something. I mean... she's really kinda ruthless when she wants something, but otherwise she's not too bad, you know?
With--uh-- [Which is where he starts sputtering. He can't give it all away now! He's got to wait until they're good and alone, having a picnic, before he does his thing.] Oh, you know! Just something. Hey, check it out, that one looks like an Earth tulip!
[Well. This is weird. Don looks unhappy--he's not great at concealing his emotions, bless him--but normally when he's having a bad day he lets Gai sort of take care of him. Right now he's just being standoffish, the way he was back when they first knew each other.
"Stop it! Being around you just makes me feel even more pathetic!"
That's a thought that hurts a lot more than it should.
He scuffs at the grass with the tip of one silver sneaker.]
[And now he's made Gai sad. Good job, Dr. Jerk. He stuffs his hands in his pockets and looks around for some route of egress from this awkward moment. The orchards down the hill look promising, if obvious.]
Oh! Well, you still know more than me. [He risks grabbing for one of Gai's hands to lead him off.] Wanna tell me about it while we look for the apple?

Well.]
Just don't scheme around with her too much, or Ahim might get the wrong idea. She can be pretty scary.

[Wait. Is Don mad at him?]
It's not scheming. It's just a project. Hey, are you feeling okay?

Just being a huge idiot, don't mind me.[That Gai's even asking saps the mad right out of him, but it doesn't replace it with happiness. He's just kinda heartbroken at himself.
