[ New York is being put back together. She likes knowing that no matter what happens, New Yorkers never change and almost immediately go back to their jaded selves. It makes slipping through the crowd that much better. She wonders what's got the streets crowded today but then remembers people are probably just out, living their lives.

It makes her fingers itch. But she'd promised Logan and Creed that she wouldn't be pickpocketing today. She's going to be good.

She's looking around, idly scratching at the tattoo on her wrist. Honestly, does anyone know how hard it is to find a soulmate with the name Steve? And she travels a lot! How many people does she have to run into named Steve before she finds the right one?

Now, Jubilee is a mutant and knows better than to tempt fate. She really does. So, when she bumps into a solid wall of muscle and flesh, she's already sure that she's run into yet another Steve.

( she makes a deal with the sea witch because she wants to see the girl again, the one who sits on the docks with her feet dangling just skimming the water, and talks about the brother she lost. the one who came back, but with no heartbeat. at first, she feels bad, for listening in but she can’t help herself. she’s always been curious about the world on land, what it would feel like to walk on two feet—but then, it becomes something else. she wants to smooth the lines on the girl’s forehead, take away the sadness she iterates to the open water.

her first step onto the shore is shaky, and she can’t help her knees from wobbling, giving way from underneath her. scuttle squawks at her, brings her a beach towel held in his beak, and tells her to cover up. wrapping it around herself, she stands again, this time more successful in moving forward out of the line of the tide.

there’s the girl. she trips in her haste to move forward, and tries to call out, forgetting that she had made the trade with ursula. human legs for her voice. as much as her arms flail about, they do not keep her from face-planting into the sand.

[ The name tattooed across his chest once brought exciting and adventurous thoughts, it was a thing of hope, of knowing that no matter how long it takes, there's always going to be someone out there who's waiting to be found.

But that was then, before, and this is now. ( not to say he's jaded to the idea of soulmates, but kuroo is fine without one. the looming umbrella of love forever is something people stress out about since they're children, living their whole lives brushing the backs of their hands against strangers on the subway, in hopes that one of those times they'd feel the white lightning bolt of love seething off the other person. kuroo finds that it hinders the quality of living. he dates girls that will never be his, touches his best friend's arm and pretends to feel love forever tingles looming off bokuto's skin. he doesn't worry about it, because if soulmates ever happen to kuroo, he'll just cross that bridge when he gets to it. whoever the lucky girl is, he's sure they'll work something out.

he's not dressed for this occasion, t-shirt and black sweats leaning off his hips with the weight of his phone and wallet in his pockets. it's the subway train where he finds himself, hand holding onto the high metal bar for support, head leaned lazily on his bicep. the train bumps and moves him this way and the next, bumping into the people that surround him with each rocky sweep, uncomfortable, but kuroo stopped apologizing for it three stops ago. it's not until he's exiting, fighting to get to the soon to close doors that he feels it -- tousling with one person to get out the door and it hits him, lightning bolts of hot flashes, the length of his arm feeling like it's lit up in warm, contented fire. his cheeks feel flushed, mind swarming in too many thoughts he can't make sense of -- he knows somewhere in the bleached space of his brain that the doors are about to close, nonetheless. without thinking, he forces his way through the door, immediately reaching back for the person -- the soulmate -- and tugging them out with him, not entirely confident they were trying to get off, but. this is their stop now.

kuroo's eyes remember how to see a second later, and when they open all they see is yaku. a boy. a boy? )
