THE MECHA BATTLE MEME
Whether your canon includes them or not, you are now in possession of a fighting machine of some sort! Roll for type, tech level and scenario if you want or just make up/choose your own.
1: Super or Magic Robot
Your ride is a walking machine that might be a secret science experiment or a magical relic. You yell the names of your attacks or mime them and your emotional state directly affects how your robot performs. Rocket punch optional. Note that this doesn't necessarily say anything about the mood or moral ambiguity of your setting. Can be anywhere from a few meters high to the size of a planet.
Example Canons: Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, Big O, Gurren Lagann, Magic Knight Rayearth
2: Real Robot
Your ride conforms to the laws of physics, or at least convincing sounding technobabble. You activate your attacks with some kind of interface, not by miming or shouting them. Your emotional state probably has no direct effect on your mecha's performance. This is a sophisticated piece of hardware that requires regular maintenance. Can be anywhere from a few to several hundred meters.
Example Canons: UC Gundam, Battletech, Heavy Gear, Armored Core
3: Super or Magic Armor
Like super robot, except there's no fussing about with large bipedal machines: you wear the science experiment/magical relic! You've got something, whether it be a belt or wrist computer or magic wand, that allows you to access a powerful combat form or suit. Your foes may have lots of clothes, and terrible fashion sense. And they always explode when defeated. Your weapons are your hands and feet, hi-tech looking martial arts weapons, cards, energy blasts and kicks. Your chance of victory is proportional to the amount of poses you make, and the number of times you might shout Henshin! Or Toh!
Example Canons: Kamen Rider, Super Sentai/Power Rangers
4: Real Armor
You pilot a suit of powered armor. Like your larger Real cousins, this is a sophisticated piece of military hardware. Often equipped with hand weapons or weapons mounted on the back, these are less powerful than larger mecha but can fit in places they couldn't. It's risky, but if you climb onto a bigger machine, it could be trouble for them!
Example Canons: Starcraft (marines, firebats, ghosts), Alien/s series, Bubblegum Crisis, Halo
5: Tank!
Or any non-flying/walking vehicle, we just couldn't resist the Cowboy Bebop reference. Your ride is on wheels, treads or hovers. While you use the same weapons (or even some the others can't like large artillery pieces), they get all the glory. Still, you play a vital role on the battlefield.
Example Canons: Bolo series, Battlezone, Girls Und Panzer, World Of Tanks
6: Dogfighters
You pilot a mecha designed primarily for dogfighting in space, the air or even underwater! Using the same missiles, lasers, particle cannons, machine guns, etc as your walking brethren, you're comparatively more fragile but can deal death from above.
Example Canons: X-Wing, Ace Combat series
7: The Big Guns
Whether an immense airship, a spaceship, a...shipship on or under the water, or even a tracked or hovering landship, you're in command of a large vessel. Bring the guns to bear and load the photon torpedoes!
Example Canons: Star Trek, Banner of the Stars, Legend Of The Galactic Heroes
8: Transforming/Combining
Your ride can transform from one type into another. Nifty.
Example Canons: Macross, Robotech, Power Rangers, Transformers
9: Other
Catch all category for the weirder kind of mecha battles. Do you remote control your machine with your mind? Is it actually a creature you live symbiotically with? A whole city on wheels? Mecha-mons? Nanomachines? Turret hacking? Burrowing mecha?
Example Canons: Mortal Engines, Ghost In The Shell, SD Gundam, Medabots
1: Steampunk or earlier
From the equivalent of the early 1900s on back.
2: Dieselpunk or Atompunk
Secret projects of WW2! Soviet landships!
3: Modern or near future
Your mecha may get the occasional blue screen of death.
4: Farther future
But not far enough that people have collectively realized that fighting in piloted giant humanoid machines is kindof dumb if you look at it objectively
5: Post apocalyptic
The weapons of the Ancients are rare and you've got one of the few operational ones left.
1: Rivals
Like Amuro and Char, you and this enemy pilot keep crossing paths. Who are they and what do they want?
2: Civil War/Traitor
Within your organization, there are some who don't agree with what's going on up top, whether through moral objection or simple power-lust. Now they're enacting your plan. Which side are you on?
3: Coolant and Circuses
You entertain the masses by pushing your machine to the limit in the arena. But who's this next opponent?
4: Rebellion
Using a giant robot for guerilla warfare sounds like an awesome, practical idea.
5: UNDERSTANDING
AKA The Tomino Option, two enemies have started to develop (not necessarily romantic) feelings for each other.
6: Monsters
Horrible creatures are coming for your home planet and it's your job to suit up and defend it.
7: Other
Make up your own scenario or reroll.
