The Train to the Afterlife

Maybe you know how, maybe you don't. Perhaps the memory is fuzzy, or perhaps it's crystal clear down to the look in your comrades' eyes. Maybe it was your time; you've done all you wanted to. Or maybe you weren't at all ready to go, maybe you went out kicking and screaming - but none of it matters. You know you're dead, and the train is taking you to an afterlife. Perhaps an afterlife of your choice; you might've earned that heaven. Or perhaps you've earned something else entirely.

It'll be a bit of a journey, though, so you might as well take your time and talk to the other people in your coach. Death knows no place: most of them are strangers, even from faraway worlds. But death knows no time either, so who knows, some of them may be people you know, even if last you knew, they were alive - or long gone.

Oh look, here comes the snack cart.

All the usual:
•Post with your character's name and canon in the subject line.

Deva, for one, always had a bad feeling about Gauda Prime. He had bad feelings about a lot of things, a lot of the time, but that was the one that he wished he acted upon - instead of dismissing. Its reputation alone, even before stepping out of the ship and onto its damp surface, was enough to harbour ill feelings about the entire situation. He made the best of it, or at least tried to, when the base was finally up and operational. It was work to be done - and there was plenty of that to do before they could launch any real strike against the Federation.

He knew, though, sooner or later, in the midst of the abundant downtime they found themselves with between scavenging the planet's abundant wreckage sites for spare parts and supplies, that boredom would set in. The game that Blake played with the bounty hunter facade had gotten him into trouble on a fair number of occasions - and they became all too frequent, by the end. All it took was that one catch that neither Deva, or Blake himself, expected.

The covert Federation officer that put a grinding halt to their little operation once she revealed herself, and gunned down the lot of those in the complex - including Deva, who reasoned that it was only a matter of time before it actually happened, when it did. Blake had already found his place on the train by then, thanks to a misunderstanding much more personal to him.

"I told you so." He really, really hated to say it. Not that it would do any good now, if his assumptions of the situation were correct.

There were far easier and safer ways to recruit people, and damn himself for humouring the game all the while.

Instead, with crossed arms, and sat next to the large window, he watched the endless nighttime scenery roll by.

It was hard to say, with the gestalt consciousness still breaking down in its remaining fragments where he was, but a train was a less exciting hell than he was hoping for, even if it was only the way in. He preferred the sandminer, if given a choice in hells. At least it was full of raving, mad lunatics.

With time to think, though, it was a pleasant change from being a dark spot on someone's brain scan, if he was there at all. Even that link was severed now, and through what means, he was also unsure. Not that he cared, even if it was the inevitable.

The amazing thing for Kaston Iago, is that he didn't recognize a single face on the train as anyone he had personally killed, for money or for pleasure (or... both). Well, not until a blonde woman got up to switch seats with a dark-haired young man. If he had a heart, it would have sunk at the sight of her face. Not that he had any feelings one way or another for her beyond a former sort-of friendship, but because she recalled a time and a place in his life that, all things considered, was worth remembering for... well, nothing that he would admit to having even the slightest bit of wayward emotion for. Not the security, the companionship, or the mistake that still burned, each and every time he pulled a trigger.

He found his way to her seat, making sure to brush off any sort of hauntedness he had about seeing her, and without introduction, he simply asked, "well? How did you bite it?"

[It was fitting, in a thematic sense. They'd come to the city on a train and now they were leaving on one. Unfortunately, both of them were well aware this train was going anywhere but home.]

It could be worse, I think. [Kakyoin offered after a long silence, leaning his head on his hand.] All things considered, maybe 'worse' doesn't really mean much in a situation like this. But at least we're not alone.

She was the last person he'd expected to see here. She'd already cheated death once -because squeamish megalomaniacs were notoriously bad shots, even at close range- and as far as he was concerned, that meant she should be damn close to fucking immortal.

But it also meant that maybe, probably, things had been much worse than he'd thought. Merlin had sent out an all-points summons, anyone near enough was needed at headquarters. They were under attack.

He'd hoped she was out of range, or on assignment elsewhere or, hell anywhere but already in the bloodbath he'd walked right into, and apparently hadn't walked out of again, though he -thankfully- didn't remember exactly what had happened.
