The Rabbit Done Died


"The rabbit died" is an old saying meaning one is pregnant, coming from the now no longer practiced rabbit test.

[Merlin had more or less accepted that he would never have children of his own, and turned all of her paternalistic urges towards his niece and nephews, knowing that he could spoil them as much as he wanted and then could return them to his sister when they grew to be too much for him.

And then Roxy came into his life, and somehow, despite how careful they've been — admittedly, they could have been much more careful, but still, he's not an idiot — she's wound up carrying his baby.

He hadn't completely lost it when she told him, but it was obviously a surprise to them both, but as time wears on, he's found he's come round to the idea rather enthusiastically. The dining room has been turned into his new study, which he's actually rather pleased with, as it has far more room than the second bedroom he'd been using before, and his old study has been cleared out completely, the carpet ripped up and the flooring replaced, and now Merlin has taken it upon himself to paint the walls a soothing dove grey. He'd thought about pink, but ultimately decided to avoid gendering their baby that heavily that early on, and went with grey as a neutral base instead.

The window is flung open and he's got a paint-speckled CD player sitting on the floor near the wall, belting out tinny music as he stands on a step ladder so that he can reach the crown moulding with his angled brush, carefully cutting in all along the ceiling.]

( They are both fortunate in that there are now many leagues which separate them from London. It would be impossible to explain this to her family, whom she would only wish to be happy for her. She seats herself beneath the bough of a large tree on the property, her skirts pooled around her. How long passes between that moment and the present, she does not know. Only that suddenly, there is a movement within her, and she nearly jumps, her book forgotten in the grass. Her blue eyes are wide as they stare down at her stomach, and the feeling comes again, like a fluttering, but stronger. She feels stretched in a way that is different from the usual; though thankfully, being the eldest of ten, she knows what is happening. )
