It starts out, well, innocently enough. They're pure, untainted, a light that's yet to be touched by this world. Somehow, you feel the need to keep them that way, conscious realization or not, no matter how that seems to go against your jaded character and bitter heart. But maybe those things are your reason. You've been beaten down by the foul weather of this world; they shouldn't have to suffer that same fate. There needs to be someone good left, somewhere. It's a rare comforting thought.

Your feelings are platonic, at the beginning. Then, their light and their infectious idealism begin to touch you, in a way you thought wasn't possible anymore.

...you're still going to guard them, keep them happy and unmarred. It's just that now, you realize the corruption you may be staving away from them is you.

Even if it hadn't been so hot that day, it was difficult to claim the mountain range. Chagum had now more experience and physical strength now than when all he knew was the Second Palace and a royal life, but he still had a long way to go to reach Balsa's level.

[There's something in the air. A strange tingle, like frost in the night, but sweeter and far less cold. There's a shimmer in the inky sky, like falling stars in miniature, falling against the window and settling against the sill. It's a beautiful sight, but dangerous. It heralds the arrival something that normal lives somewhere far, far away, beyond the last stone in the circle and through the eye of a needle.

Inside, a baby sleeps peacefully, although half an hour ago the tiny thing was probably screaming fit to burst. It looks serene now though, even as a strange music starts to play and the windows that seemed securely locked burst open. Those falling stars, or points of frost, swirl into the room, landing on the walls and carpet, on the large bed and the furniture, twinkling in the light.

A figure, dressed fit for a Venetian Ball steps over to the crib, humming a strange tune as he leans over to brush a finger over the child's chubby cheek.]

It hadn't been very long, that brief period of time Exodus had spent as a prisoner of the Avengers. A week, if even that much, before agents of the Brotherhood had found and freed him.

But it left an impression on him. He'd expected to be beaten, tortured, humiliated. Instead he'd been treated with courtesy -- armed courtesy, but courtesy nonetheless. No one had laid a hand on him. He and the Captain spoke a couple of times, but always it had been with civility. Rogers had even offered to teach him how to improve his hand-to-hand skills, seeing how quickly he'd been brought down once they'd been able to ground him.

But now the tables are turned and it is Rogers who is the prisoner. Taken captive by a Brotherhood strike force, chained up like an animal and, in 24 hours, set to be executed on live television for all the world to see. For 'war crimes', as Magneto has put them. But Exodus knows the truth. Part of it is his lord's wish to show the world the Brotherhood's power -- and what better way to do that than by killing the leader of the world's most well-known superhuman fighting force? But another part of it, a deeper part, is pure and simple spite. Rogers was active during the war, when Magneto was still just Erik Lensherr, a young and frightened boy. Captain America had the power to save that boy and his mother from Sebastian Shaw, but he did not. And Magneto cannot forgive him for it.

Exodus knows that his liege's word is law. By Magneto's word, Captain America must die -- and that should be the end of it. Magneto is his lord and master, he owes him everything. What is Captain America? A noble-yet-foolish man fighting for a noble-yet-foolish cause. A human. He owes him nothing.

So no one is more surprised than him when he finds himself standing outside Rogers's cell, dispatching the two clones of Brotherhood member the Multiple Man before opening the door. Just seeing Rogers inside, trussed up like a farm animal to be slaughtered, sparks a wave of righteous anger in him.

"Come," he says without preamble, coming over to free the Captain from his restraints. "We must move quickly."

A beautiful princess. [Except she wasn't one. She was the daughter of a local lord. And she'd arch an eyebrow if anyone called her beautiful, because they obviously wanted something.]

She had a twin brother though. [He was a witch - A shaman, he corrects patiently, time and time again.]

This not-princess like to ride horses [this part is true] and she also liked hounds that would accompany her on these rides when she brought her bow. Now, this not-princess [who hereafter will be called Freya for ease of use], had an odd habit of talking to ravens. She had decided, as a silly game, that they were all named Walter and were trying to share an important message, but had forgotten how to speak the King's Tongue. Except when she was actually hunting, she would encourage them to use their words and, as you can very well guess, nothing ever came of it.

One day however, a noble's son, a family that had sworn fealty to Freya's father, decided he would have a little fun and he lay in wait for the young woman, intending on trying out his sharp blade on her. Thomas, as he was called, took every opportunity to hurt defenseless animals, usually with fire when he was bored, but sometimes in new and inventive ways. No longer a boy, he had been hunting larger and more risky targets, and people, as it turned out, were much more fun than animals.
