Once you get down to it, fighting is pretty intimate. For a split second, guards let down so you can push yourself to your limit. Energy expended to gain that win. Bodies on bodies, pinning, grappling, pressing against someone. Panting. Sweating. If some UST is already there, if you two are already frayed due to a lingering attraction, a little physicality may be the breaking point. So whether you're really fighting, both of you are training, or one of you is teaching the other some moves to defend themselves (even if somebody's holding back and handling the situation with kid gloves), holds may go on a little longer than they should, words may come out in the heat of the moment -

And, of course, you may find that a kiss is the perfect way to knock an opponent off their feet....or that you want to lay a smooch on them, anyway, when they topple over onto you. You may not win, but really, you do!

(basically canon for her, so canonmates and versemates are deeefinitely a plus, but ota for both gen and shipping, no smut, cross-canon def welcome)

[ nothing about this is a good idea; the close proximity, physical contact, with temptation always lingering. just being around her throws him. the same way it always has. but really, what other way is there to ease some of the tension? if it helps buffy live to fight another day then it’s worth it; he won’t pretend all of his intention are that altruistic though. there’s a cadence to fighting; attack, perry, divert, repeat. she’s stronger than him; faster, experience is what he has on his side. ]

Stop dropping your right hand. It leaves you vulnerable. [ as stern as his voice sounds it’s a defense mechanism if anything. she’s always going to be the slayer in his mind; facing odds that none of her predecessors did and overcoming them. as if to illustrate his point, he steps forward, feinting with a left hook, instead dropping a little lower to sneak an arm around her waist, instantly tightening the hold.

it’s an attempt to bring buffy to the ground with him on top; he knows how resourceful she is, able to reverse a position in the blink of an eye. and he is distracted; slightly. when they’re that near one another, it’s impossible not to breathe in her scent. vanilla mixing in with the sweat from how long they’ve been going at this. ]

[ It's after her first run-in with an actual templar, one that can Silence her and cut off her power entirely, that she realizes magic can't be her only option in a fight. It's a marginal miracle when Iron Bull comes sweeping in at the last second, cleaving the man near in two, but the shock of it stays with her long after the battle is done. That could have been it, for her. There's always the possibility of it happening, and she refuses to be helpless when it does.

She could ask Cassandra, or Bull, or any number of her companions to step into the ring and help her spar, learning to use her staff as more than just a conduit for her powers. But she's watched the commander running drills with his men, observed the way he teaches. More than once. For a number of reasons, admittedly.

Her priority now, however, is surviving the next encounter with someone who can cut her off from her magic, or the next time her mana runs low in a pinch. So she lingers on the outside of the training ring, and waits until the other recruits have been dismissed, before making her way towards Cullen with a look of purpose etched onto her face. Maybe he wouldn't want to. Maybe sparring with a mage was the last thing on earth he'd want, and she couldn't blame him for that if it were the case.

Still, no harm in asking. ]

( don't let her appearance fool you. with a resilience like few others and a healing factor, she's no pushover, and she wants to learn how to protect herself and those she cares for in the least violent ways possible.
