More weighty traumas that you've unknowingly pushed back can work in much the same way. You shy away from using scissors as you feel a shiver run down your spine, not necessarily as you remember blood gushing from toddler-sized fingers when you played with the big-kid scissors and cut yourself. Still, there is a connection and it keeps you "safe" through past experience. The consciousness is amazing in that way, constantly making associations that, for better or worse, shape how we view the world around us, though we may not always recall what brought us those views. In this meme, however, there's no way this particular association - a special person, being around them, and your happiness - can go unnoticed, and you know the exact cause. In fact, you can track down the exact moment: this person came to you when you were low, perhaps even at your lowest. [ He has every reason to be frustrated, no reason to blame himself for the progress he's made (or lack thereof). But he's wrong to wonder why Roxy does this, to think that she ought to be with someone closer to her own age, to someone who he thinks is more useful. He's a fool not to realize the reason she's practically moved in with him, not understand why she's there to help him through it, to offer her support even when she worries that things won't ever be the same, even when he gets grumpy or short with her.

There's a reason she's steadfast and true, patient and caring, although perhaps it's her fault for not telling him outright, how she feels. There have been a few times it's almost slipped out, a few times when she was wrapped up in him or once after a particularly close call. She'd even whispered the words as he was being wheeled in, clinging to life while she clutched his hand. It's easy for her to think of age as just being a number when she's in love. It didn't matter to her if in twenty years, should they still be together, should he love her too, that she'd be taking care of him again, in some fashion. It didn't lessen the way she feels for him.
