after the announcement is made that the wedding will be back on in just a little bit, haru begins making his way down the aisle. he pauses briefly and glances at makoto, holding his gaze for a few moments before he continues and leaves through the chapel doors. no one will think any of it (except maybe their friends) if makoto goes out to talk with him. they're best friends, after all, and who better to confide in at a time like this?
it's good to be outside. the air smells somewhat like rain, but haru likes that, too. he walks a little ways away and around the corner, away from the doors. he hopes makoto can find him here. makoto... it's back to that again. i love you. haru feels his heart skip a beat and, now that he has more time to process it, he feels his face heat up, too. makoto loves him. haru has so many questions that he wants to ask makoto, himself. when? for how long? was he going to try and keep it secret forever, and why would he do that to himself? for haru? and most importantly, a question haru can only ask himself: does he love makoto, too?
his heart thuds heavy in his chest and haru bows his head, hand curling tight into his shirt as if to grip his heart. this is something he has to decide, and now. ]
no subject
exiting the building is a relief, though makoto imagines it's an even greater one for haru. he knows he should be thankful for the pressing that led to his telling the truth, but there's a sense of guilt over saddling haru with his feelings at the last possible moment. it's something that will pass, makoto's sure, but he's sure he's pushed an immense amount of stress on top of haru with his sudden decision to get out of the wedding.
haru isn't immediately in sight, but makoto has the sense to know he hasn't run off. he moves toward the side of the building, peeking around the corner to find haru there. ]
Hey. [ a soft, easy greeting as makoto joins him, as if he's found haru avoiding crowds on the roof during lunch rather than momentarily escaping his own wedding. he comes to a stop close in front of haru, eyes falling to the hand curled into his shirt. slowly, makoto lifts a hand to cover haru's, gently aiming to pull it away from his shirt. ]
I'm sorry. I should've told you sooner.
[ or completely kept it to himself, but he knows haru won't like hearing that. ]
no subject
makoto's hand on his, he slowly uncurls his fingers from the fabric of his shirt, hesitating before letting it drop to his side. having makoto so close does nothing to help the way his heart is racing, but haru makes no attempt to distance himself from him. brow creasing slightly, haru studies makoto's face. he wishes makoto wouldn't apologize. haru doesn't want him to. it would have been good to know sooner, but it doesn't change anything aside from the fact that he just would have tried to back out of the wedding earlier. makoto is still at the top of his list; the wedding doesn't even come close. it was never that important, but now it's even less so.
they can't stand in silence forever, not when time is ticking away once again, and haru figures he better start talking, difficult as some of the things he wants to know and say may be. it takes him a moment, haru stuck thinking on things of the past, signs he might have missed and things he's felt for makoto over the years. he'll start with what he wants to know most, how long makoto has been keeping this hidden away. ]
How long...?
[ how long have you felt like this? ]
no subject
he knows he's possibly playing a bigger part in that than the wedding itself and he wants to tell haru that they can talk later. they'll have all the time in the world once he's finished freeing himself from the ceremony he's expected to return to, so they can put it off. haru doesn't have to come up with any reply or answer for the confession right now.
makoto plans to voice that, but he's met with a question that leaves him quiet instead. how long? it's a good question and he doesn't even know if he can answer it properly. even so, he tries anyway, opening his mouth then closing it once then twice before he finally speaks. ]
I don't know. [ the truth first, then he can elaborate. ] I can't tell you how long ago the feelings started, but I know when I realized how I felt. When we argued at the festival, when I tried to convince you to make a choice and I told you I was going to Tokyo... I realized how I felt right after that.
It was probably during our second year of high school. I think that's when my feelings changed and I didn't realize it because I've always loved you in some way. But I guess it was that year that I started to feel like I didn't want to lose you.
no subject
i didn't want to lose you. chest tightening, haru feels his heart skip another beat. makoto didn't want to lose him, and yet, if he got married... what makoto told him back inside the chapel, about having someone else, about spending less time together-- makoto's fear was coming true. it was coming true and makoto wasn't going to tell him how he felt until haru had pushed it out of him. guilt starts to overtake him, too, considering that he didn't even notice, didn't even make the slightest connection. he's supposed to be makoto's best friend, and yet... ]
You were never going to tell me...
[ that much, he's sure of. with how hard he had to pry, makoto probably intended to keep it a secret for the rest of his life. haru doesn't like the thought of that and it shows in his expression, lips curved into a small frown. ]
no subject
somewhere along the way, he's accepted that he'll have to lose haru in some way and that's how they've ended up in this position. every option he's been faced with has been selfish in some way. keeping his feelings to himself is selfish because haru deserves to know. distancing himself from haru is selfish because he deserves an explanation. confession to haru is selfish because it leads to this, to haru stressed and likely looking for an answer to give. in the end, he's managed to check every box when it could've been avoided by just admitting his feelings much earlier. ]
No, I wasn't.
[ makoto's guilt mounts at the sight of that frown. ]
I never wanted to put you in a position where you felt like you owed me an answer to something like that.
no subject
besides, haru wants something else, too. he doesn't want makoto to go away. he doesn't want to spend less time with him anymore, or ever. he doesn't want to get married to some girl he hardly knows. the more makoto goes on, the more he's sure of it, that he must love makoto, too, and that what he wants is him. he didn't know it before, but he knows it now. all that loneliness, feeling like something was missing, nights where he couldn't fall asleep and when sleep finally came, his dreams only consisted of him-- haru didn't know how to interpret it, but this has helped. as stressful as it might be, it's opened his eyes.
still, he doesn't know how to convey it. soon someone will come looking for them, he's positive of it, but for right now it's still just the two of them. ] Owe you? [ haru takes a daring step forward, tilting his chin up to look straight at makoto, eyes narrowed. ] You're always doing things for me. You need to take what you want every once in a while.
no subject
what he's told gets a small laugh from makoto as he stares back at haru. he lifts a hand like he intends to let it rest against haru's cheek, fingertips brushing against it, but he loses the courage for it before he can do more than that and he lets his hand fall to rest on haru's shoulder instead. ]
How am I supposed to take what I want in a situation like this, Haru? [ you're what i want is the meaning beneath that, which he thinks is obvious. but taking haru isn't an option. it's something that he needs to decide on himself, something that he needs to work out without makoto beside him to influence his response, should he decide to give one at all. ] I wouldn't try to force you to give me a reply no matter what.
[ around the corner, the chapel doors open and a female voice calls haru's name. makoto glances over his shoulder then looks back to haru, giving his actions only a moment's thought before he grabs hold of one of his best friend's hands to quickly pull him off in the opposite direction, toward the back of the chapel. ]
no subject
he understands the meaning behind makoto's words, but he doesn't know what to say in return. you're not forcing me, is what he wants to say. i want to answer. but haru's mouth only opens enough to make a small, quiet strained noise before he gives up. how does he convince makoto it's okay? someone wanting him is a foreign idea to him, he's never had anyone tell him they love him that didn't extend further than as family or friends.
glancing toward the direction of the voice that calls out for him, haru frowns again. he doesn't really want to go back. he hasn't come up with an idea yet. before he can say or do anything more, makoto's hand is in his and he's following him without resistance. he has no idea what makoto is planning on doing, taking him back here, but he trusts makoto.
at the back of the chapel, he looks at him, eyes questioning. he doesn't let go of makoto's hand, not yet, whether he's forgotten or just doesn't want to or a little of both. ]
Why are we back here?
[ the obvious answer would probably be because makoto knows haru wants to end this, that he isn't ready to go back. but still, does he have a plan? ]
no subject
To give you more time. [ makoto glances down at their hands and curls his fingers around haru's to give him a small squeeze, a reassurance that he's not going anywhere this time. ]
We can finish talking once we're home again, in private. I promise. But you need to figure out what you're going to say to get out of this first.
[ because no amount of conversation about the two of them and how they feel is going to matter if haru can't find something to say to free himself from the ceremony he's expected to rejoin. even if nothing comes from his confession and they just remain friends, makoto can't leave him to get married now that he's said he doesn't plan to go through with it.
but his thoughts are churning in a way that doesn't lend to offering any good suggestions for escaping it. makoto doesn't have experience with this kind of thing. it's not as if he's attended many weddings, much less seen people try to get out of them once they've reached the alter. ]
no subject
as for getting out of the wedding, would it be as simple as telling the truth? now that makoto has told him how he feels, and now that haru is discovering how he feels, too, what all of this over the years has meant, that's what it comes down to. but haru doesn't know if they'll buy it. that's all he can come up with, though, that and the plain, straight up refusal to go through with this wedding.
looking back up at makoto, haru studies his face, like he hopes to somehow find what to say that way. separating himself any further from makoto isn't an option. the last year has confirmed how much he doesn't like that. maybe the truth is all he has. ]
... I know what I'll tell them.
[ haru hears his name again, and looking in the direction it's coming from, haru notices it sounds closer to them. at least he had a minute or two more to think about this, thanks to makoto. again, haru's eyes fall on him, lips slightly parted like he means to say something else, but can't find the words. ]
you didn't write too much! ;;
makoto glances over haru's face in return, wondering how it's going to happen, how he'll get himself out of this. he finds himself wondering what he'd do in haru's shoes and realizing he honestly can't say when he feels the way he does.
the statement haru makes gets a blink from makoto, a look of surprise at how seemingly easy it is for haru to decide what he'll say with the time away from everyone else. he considers asking, but stops himself, simply nodding instead. ]
Alright.
[ he, too, glances off in the direction the voice is coming from, knowing it won't be much longer before they're found. when he gaze returns to haru, he notes the way he looks and that nothing is being said, giving him a small smile after a moment. ]
You should go say what you need to say, Haru. [ there's another squeeze to haru's hand and, in a bold moment, makoto pulls their joined hands up long enough to brush his lips against haru's knuckles. then he lets go, nodding off in the direction of the side of the building as an urge for haru to get things over with so it's no longer weighing on him. ]
ahh okay ;; also sorry if i rushed haru's decision i get... excited sometimes...
Yeah...
[ haru is a little hesitant to move at first, but it seems makoto isn't done yet, anyway. he watches makoto lift his hand to his lips, eyes widening just slightly when he brushes them against his knuckles. haru's ears burn red and he has to look away, hand hanging a little awkwardly in the air before he brings it back down, curling his fingers into his palm. glancing toward the side of the chapel, he takes a deep breath through his nose and heads toward whoever is calling his name-- his mother, probably.
she seems happy to see him, relieved, but haru stops a few feet in front of her, lips bent into a small frown. this may be his mom, but haru is ready to stand his ground. when she asks if he's ready now, haru gives the same answer he gave the priest before. i can't. of course she doesn't understand why, she wasn't in that small room with makoto and haru, she didn't hear makoto's confession. before this, haru was resigned to this marriage, no argument from him at all.
haru is quiet for a long time before he's able to answer. ]
There's someone I want to be with. [ he pauses, wondering if makoto can hear from around the corner. they aren't that far away, but haru isn't very loud, either. ] Someone I don't want to leave alone...
there wasn't any rushing. and excitement is good! you never have to apologize for it. <3
makoto hopes it doesn't. haru's parents have always seemed far more easygoing and relaxed in regards to letting haru do what he wants most, so he hopes they'll be reasonable about this as well. of course, it likely depends on the reason haru gives, but that's not something makoto can help.
he watches haru's reaction to the near kiss to his knuckles, makoto's own cheeks warm from his own action. he doesn't get another look before haru moves away and he watches him go, stepping back to lean against the back wall of the chapel as he lets out a heavy sigh.
from his spot, he can't hear the conversation being held somewhere around the corner. it's not really his place to try to listen in anyway, so he simply remains in his spot, not wanting to step out and look like he's trying to involve himself in something that's between family at the moment. ]
okay ;_; you're too nice <3
it's a long time before he's done talking with his mother. she, of course, wants her son to be happy. this just seemed like the right course of action for both families, a beneficial marriage. she sees a little exasperated, though, and for that haru feels guilty. he knows that the relationship between both parents will probably take a little turn for the worst now that the marriage is definitely not happening, and for cancelling it the day of. when haru's mother asks him if he's really sure about it, haru answers with one final definitive yes. she leaves him with instructions on what to do before he even thinks about leaving and wishes him luck with whatever girl he's chosen. haru isn't sure whether to correct her or not, but decides to simply leave it alone.
when his mother leaves and haru finally moves, it's to return to makoto, first. his eyes are trained on the ground beneath him as he walks. seeing makoto again is just going to remind him that he just about kissed his hand before haru left to talk with his mom, and though he didn't dislike it, it was... different. haru has never had that kind of attention focused on him.
he's almost surprised to spot makoto still standing there. it's been fifteen minutes at the least, and though he has it in his head that he really shouldn't be too shocked, he finds his heart doing flips in his chest. haru takes a deep breath before speaking and even then he still doesn't look up. not for another moment. when he does, he only tilts his chin up halfway. ]
It's off. [ does he sound a little relieved? ] ... I have to go back and apologize, though...
[ to the bride and her parents, mostly. he leaves out the part about his mother telling him that he'd better marry this mystery person in the future to make it up to her. haru peeks up at makoto. he wants to ask him to come with, but isn't sure if he should... since makoto is generally a master at reading haru's mind, hopefully he'll pick that up so haru doesn't have to ask. ]
no subject
but he doesn't dwell. he'll make it up to haru, who any upset parties are going to take issue with, as soon as he figures out a way to manage it. makoto decides he'll start by staying by haru's side as long as he wants him. in the physical sense, that is. it's been too long since they've just spent time together thanks to his own way of trying to distance them and he wants to make up for that, too. thinking about it, he realizes there are a number of things he wants to make up for. first, though, he supposes they'll need to talk, to sort out how haru feels in return. it's possible that makoto does still want to avoid that part. they've known one another forever and makoto can't recall haru having so much as a crush on anyone, even through high school.
he's preoccupied with his thoughts until haru rounds the corner and the movement in the corner of his eye catches his attention. makoto glances over and, for a moment, his heart sinks. the way haru's eyes remain down, the avoiding his eyes... he's expecting to hear they're heading back inside so haru can go on with the ceremony.
instead, he's surprised by the news he gets, eyes wide for a moment before a smile, both relieved and happy, spreads across his face. ]
I guess we should go back inside if you need to do that.
[ makoto doesn't even need to think about it to suggest accompanying haru back into the chapel and along to get his apologies in. he steps closer to haru and rests his hands on his shoulders for a moment, nodding. ]
Let's go. Then we can go home.
no subject
Yeah. Together.
[ so back inside the chapel they head, haru squinting as his eyes adjust to the indoor light again. he can see their friends gathered in a small group from the doorway. haru decides apologizing to them will be easiest and goes to them first. they're all supportive of him, even rin with his snarky remarks that haru just meets with lowered eyes and a frown, but in the end-- even when nagisa is crying about how glad he is haru-chan isn't being taken away yet and rei is scolding him for saying so-- haru still smiles. maybe he shouldn't be smiling with the kind of situation he's in, but haru is glad to still have friends who support him no matter what, and that includes makoto.
it's the families that are going to be difficult to apologize to, and now that the time has come, haru is no longer smiling. to both, haru bows as low as he can possibly get without looking too ridiculous, offering a sincere and stern apology to both sides, mainly the parents. the bride's family is clearly not happy with the situation, and her father says nothing to haru, but he can't do anything more. he won't and can't take his decision back. there's no way to explain himself without sounding bad, so he doesn't, just says how sorry he is and that he understands if forgiveness isn't an option now.
the bride is next. haru is hesitant to go up to her, can hear her sniffling even before he starts to approach her, and he looks to makoto as if searching for some kind of confirmation that it's okay to go. he knows he needs to, but haru isn't even sure where to begin with her. ]
no subject
he does, however, stay as close as he can without being on top of haru. the apology to their friends works out easily - none of them would ever hold anything like this against haru. it's a testament to the fact that he'll have people who care about him in his life no matter what and makoto's glad the apology to them comes first if only because he hopes it serves as some amount of reassurance.
when haru moves on to the families, makoto hangs back. it's much more serious than the apology with their friends and he watches haru from the spot he takes not too far away, glancing over the faces of the bride's family. he wonders how long it'll take for them to end up on good terms with haru's parents again, if it'll happen at all. chewing on the inside of his lip, he watches haru's final words to them then the move to go on to the bride.
the toughest part. makoto wonders how attached the girl really got to haru, how much this actually hurts versus how much is just a shock on a day that's meant to be happy. his eyes meet haru's and he gives him a small nod, encouraging him to go on and apologize sincerely since she's honestly the person who deserves the biggest apology, after all. ]
no subject
before he can even get any words out, she stands and haru hesitates. he watches her expression change and quickly she pulls her arm back, slapping haru across the face. haru probably could have stopped her, isn't sure why he didn't. instead, he stands there with eyes wide for a moment before quietly murmuring his apology, bowing to her. after a pause, he steps away from her and back to makoto. his cheek is red and will probably start to swell soon, but haru is taking it pretty well, all things considered. he looks almost contemplative as he stands in front of makoto. ]
... She's not happy.
[ obviously, and he knows makoto can tell too (anyone in the chapel can probably tell that), but this is his way of showing he feels bad for her. it's not enough to want to change anything, however. he lifts his gaze so he's back to looking at makoto again and he sighs. ]
Let's go home...
[ also, oops, because i didn't remember they had their own apartments versus dorm rooms until i rewatched f:es a few days ago, so, gently retcons that ]
no subject
the redness makes makoto want to lift a hand to haru's cheek, but he knows better than to do any tending to haru here. not in front of everyone. instead, concerned eyes glance over the reddened skin before makoto's focus shifts to haru's entire face instead, the statement earning a soft nod. he understands what it is, that haru feels bad for having put her in the position she's now in and for upsetting her. makoto doesn't voice that she may be happy about this later on, if she finds someone and falls in love with them. ]
Mm, let's. We need to put something on your cheek when we get there...
[ he nods and turns, motioning haru forward so he can walk along with him to head out of the chapel once more. ]
[[ that's okay! haha i had to go look it up somewhere a while ago myself. i need to do a rewatch soon. ]]
no subject
I'll be fine.
[ in truth, though haru wouldn't say it, he's sort of hoping makoto will tend to him anyway. it's been such a long time since makoto has really been by his side that he misses it, misses his way of getting into everything he does. he might have yelled at him once for it, but that was a long time ago, and they got over that hurdle. haru misses the familiar, misses the normalcy, and those both come with makoto.
walking side by side with makoto, he approaches the doors, and when he opens them he finds it's started to rain. he knew the air smelled like it before, but he remembers hearing someone mention that there was only supposed to be a low chance of it happening. oh well. it's not like haru minds getting wet. makoto, though... ]
Rain. I didn't bring an umbrella...
[ they could wait it out, but haru doesn't really want to be here any longer. really doesn't want to. he frowns just at the thought. it's probably not the most comfortable place for makoto to be now, either, if he felt okay being here to begin with. haru knows now that he couldn't have possibly wanted to see him get married off if he loves him. staying around after cancelling the wedding and apologizing seems like the wrong thing to do, too. do they run for it? ]
no subject
when they reach the doors, makoto is surprised by the sight of the rain. he'd checked the weather before leaving home and knew there was a small chance, but now that it's raining it seems fairly fitting for the way things have gone inside of the chapel.
he glances over at haru and shrugs a shoulder at the mention of the umbrella. ]
We're going home. We can dry off when we get there.
[ his eyes remain on haru. ] Ready?
no subject
Yeah... Ready. [ walking outside until they're at the edge of where the canopy covers, haru pauses and then looks down at makoto's hand. no one is looking right now, not behind the closed chapel doors, and it wouldn't take much to just reach over and take his hand before running. he stretches his fingers out, almost brushing his fingertips against makoto's hand, until he finally clasps their hands together and starts to make a dash for the car.
haru is still sort of slow on land, and the car is parked a little ways away, so there's no way to avoid getting at least partially soaked on the way there. but makoto is right, they can dry off at home. haru wouldn't mind just getting out of this tuxedo altogether, anyway. the rain feels nice, too, a little cold but better than the stuffy chapel. the atmosphere in there was getting more and more constricting the longer he was there.
reaching the car, haru gets in the passenger side, reaching over and opening the door for makoto. makoto is a better driver than he is, in haru's opinion. he takes a moment to catch his breath, though running in the rain isn't really as strenuous as swimming a few laps. ]
no subject
when they reach the car, their grip on one another is broken and makoto moves to the side haru avoids, sliding in behind the steering wheel and closing himself inside with a quiet laugh as he runs a hand through his hair and opens his jacket so he can shrug it off and lay it across the back seat.
once he's more comfortable, he accepts the keys and gets the car started, pulling out and away easily enough to start them back toward their apartments. it isn't until the chapel is out of sight behind them that he glances over at haru for a second. ]
Does getting away from there feel better?
no subject
Yeah. It does. [ he pauses, then opens his eyes. ] It'll be better when I can change.
[ there's still the topic of their feelings, too-- his feelings-- that still weigh on haru's mind. he's somewhat aware makoto doesn't really want to talk about it, but if he actively tries to avoid it when they're home, he isn't sure what he'll do. haru already forced it out of makoto once. maybe it would be mean to force him to talk about it again. or maybe haru just needs to be the one who meddles in makoto's life this time.
for the rest of the ride, haru mostly keeps his gaze set out the window, watching the drops of rain cascade down the glass. it's sort of relaxing. their apartments aren't too far away, it's maybe a ten or fifteen minute ride, but even then haru springs out of the car like he's been inside of it for ages when they arrive. he's ready to get out of this tuxedo.
he doesn't wait for makoto to get out of the car, instead heading toward the stairs to his apartment and to the door, which he leaves unlocked once opened. he isn't sure whose apartment they're going to go to so that they can talk, but if makoto isn't here by the time he's done changing then he'll probably head to his place. ]
