Forbidden Love Between Servant and Master

the forbidden love between servant and master meme
These days, it's uncommon to have a servant. The wealthy have them, of course, but some of them even eschew that to have a sort of pride in being self-sufficient. Rarer still are the personal servants, the ones bound to just one person and taking care of their every need. They make sure their master or mistress is dressed, fed, and all their affairs are in order. They may double as a bodyguard or personal assistant in other functions, as well. This type of servant was much more common back in the day.
But today, you have one. You've always had one. Or may, you are one, loyal to your employer to the core.
Perhaps you're more of a vassal than a servant, then. You serve because of duty and love; you've been raised to know this your duty for your entire life. Your family has been tied to this family for generations. You could have even been summoned by magic, your whole purpose to serve.
And even if you're not a "true" servant in the sense of the word, there's always people who look out for others. You know the person in the group of friends. They seem bound to the hip to that one specific person, usually someone who actually does need the help, and acts as a mother hen to them. Yes, you're that person.
It all sounds simple enough, then. The problem? The relationship between master and servant has been blurred, and the feelings and bonds here have grown more than they should. The servant doesn't just love the master, they love the master. And it's not that much of a stretch to think that the gesture is reciprocated. But this is an ultimate taboo. Power differences, societal expectations, and conflicts of interest mean that there's a whole mess that can be made. If that line hasn't been crossed yet, keep dancing it. Try to back off, if you can. Do not cross the line. Do not become...more.
If more has come, you are in danger. Will it interfere with the ability of the servant to serve? Will they envy all those in higher stations who can get close to their master? And what about the nature of their relationship being exposed? Others will not be as kind, and there could even be punishment ahead should the wrong eyes fall upon the truth. After all, a servant and a master have been so close, in close quarters. There is no knowing what could have happened.

Modern!AU totally works for me, he would absolutely be into her, but I can also pretty easily make him a lord of some kind, a very canny political schemer a la Mesliande. Alternatively, I could totally see him being a servant of Namaah and sort of mirror image of Phedre, commanding where she's submissive. ]

It's that she doesn't trust herself to linger without blurring the lines between professionalism and a personal attachment.
Phedre sighs, absently tapping her fingertips against the drink sitting in front of her - it's club soda, she aims never to drink anything that would dull her senses when there are so many other things that would overwhelm her instead. She crosses her legs, adjusting the skirt of her dress - backless, to expose the impressive tattoo that covers the majority of her back. She makes a point of arriving early. It's what he prefers, what he demands of her. It's the first of many things he will likely demand of her tonight.

She is a fascination of his. It's probably transparent; he doesn't make much effort to hide that. And maybe she even can see the fascinated way that he regards the world, that he toys with it for his own satisfaction. Which makes it enthralling and puzzling that she comes back to him, again and again. Julian can be a staggeringly good person. He saves people, sometimes. He gives them futures when they would have had none. But, on the whole, he supposes that he's done evil that most people couldn't forgive. He aspires to be a figure of perfect, calculated chaos, every contradiction in one.
He wonders if she thinks she can save him.
He watches her now.
Not much, a subtle pause, and he shifts into movement the moment she notices his presence. And when he approaches, it's smooth, a hand gliding on her bare back, a kiss touched to her cheek. He knows he's beautiful, too, and he shows it off: perfect suit, dark purple button-up beneath.
"My dear," he tells her. "You are lovely."

Perhaps it is the connection they have that alerts her to his presence, or the way the energy in the bar suddenly shifts, evolves - as if everyone is holding their breath waiting for the inevitable. She knows he is a man of contradiction, and one that fascinates many people. There are parts of himself she is certain he has shown to no one, and yet she finds herself drawn in just the same. And she is drawn in now, her gaze lifted from her drink to his face as she spots him. She immediately straightens, her back a delicate curve, anticipating.
Even something as mild as a simple brush of the hand has her shivering, leaning towards the kiss glanced over her cheek - and she smiles, a genuine expression of her happiness at his arrival.
"I thought you might like the red," she answers.
